 Right I havn't met anyone yet who can tell me what colour my horse is! Nor have I seen another one the same! Lots of people come up and ask what colour he is especially when his summer coat comes through (which it practically is now hence the post! The questions have started! :p) And I simply look at them blankly and say 'errrrrrr bay-ish?' LOL :o
Many say he is liver chestnut, some say bay others brown but really he doesn't fit into any of these properly. Photos are tricky, he looks a different colour in nearly every picture I have  Alot of photos he simply looks dark bay but he isn't, he has no black points, his legs are chocolate brown (they look you could snap them off and eat them!) The main part of his body goes very blonde in the summer (almost a dunny type colour) with alot of dappling. I will take more pics tomorrow but from these, what do you all think?
These are the most true pics I could find to how he looks in RL please ignore the fact he looks like a donkey!

Looking at him and LOL he looks a different colour on each pic he's a dark bay...if he has a brown body and black legs and mane tail he is defo a bay...

Oh and this was about a month ago so gives you an idea of his winter coat, I have never had him unclipped in winter (the blanket clip is the most winter hair he has ever had so I can't tell you what his proper winter coat is like!

Again, the camera doesn't really pick up his RL colouring though.

LOL he can't be liver chestnut because his mane and tail are virtually black. His legs are not black though, not a black hair in them! I went through of phase of saying he was brown and got told off...not that any of the tellers off could tell me what he was!

Black/mane tail he's a bay LOL anything which has black points is a bay...although I always thought my mare in my siggy was a bay until recently I found out she is a Black/Tan due to her Lighter areas!! which gutted me as was planning to breed again and try for a Buckskin!!:(

I think we should just call him Fred-Bay and invent a new colour!! LOL He does like to be different with everything in life
So even though his legs are never black he is a bay? Of sorts?!

Gosh you aren't far off there, denman seems to change colour in every documented picture as well! :p SO what colour is denman officiallly then?!

It is very striking, hence why I get all the questions and comments on his colour from nearly everyone we meet! I actually just found a denman listed as chestnut and listed elsewhere as bay! Great....oh well colour made little difference to his success :p I quite often call fred Bournville brown! Because he looks like a bar of dark rich chocolate! LOL

I'd actually be really rather pleased to say he was chestnut! As you can tell from my sig and avatar I have a passion for animals of the ginger persuasion!! :D

BAY the body color ranges from tan through red to reddish brown. The mane and tail are black. Black is commonly found on the lower legs.

BLACK BAY - a bay where the coat is a very dark brown that appears black, except around the muzzle and maybe the belly, sometimes called seal brown.

BROWN BAY - a bay where the coat color is brown

CHERRY BAY - a type of bay where the coat color is a dark red, like cherry wood.

COPPER BAY - a bay where the coat is a very red, copper color

DARK BAY - a bay with a dark coat

GOLDEN BAY - a bay with a golden colored coat

LIGHT BAY - a bay with a light coat color.

RED BAY - a bay with a decidedly red coat.

SEAL BAY - see black bay

BROWN the body is a shade of brown or black with no hint of red. light areas are found on the muzzle, eyes, flank, and inside upper legs. The mane and tail are black.

SEAL BROWN - an extremely dark brown, sometimes mistaken for black, that has lighter brown hair on the muzzle, around the eyes, and sometimes on the knees

CHESTNUT the body color is dark red or reddish brown.

BLACK CHESTNUT - a very dark chestnut, with lots of black hair, but keeps the red color, darker than liver chestnut.

GOLDEN CHESTNUT - a chestnut with a rich, gold coat.

LIVER CHESTNUT - a dark chestnut, often with black hairs mixed in

Thanks CA...still none the wiser! :p It makes my brain hurt...he fits none of the classic discriptions!

Try posting this in breeding, there's a lady in there who's fab with colours. Just another idea - smokey black? ie. A black horse with one dilute gene. Technically, the dilute gene shouldn't affect black hair, but sometimes they look a bit chocolatey. Do you know the colour of his parents? That would make things a LOT easier! He is super, whatever colour he is!

I would say that he is definitely .........not bay! Thats about as good as I can manage. I think liver chestnut (if his points really aren't black...they don't look black) or maybe chocolate dun - do duns have to have black points too though?? aagh.

He is bay.

If you wanted to be exotic you could say a chocolate dun.

He is beautiful any way.

I'm really not convinced this horse is genetically a chestnut of any sort. I think his baseline is black but that there is something else going on. Why don't you do blood tests and find out? There not very expensive and would be very interesting! As I said, the lady in breeding is very good with colour genetics and could tell you which ones are worth doing.
