Today both my horses are on a non ride day so today kids were at school for 8.30, horses done by 9.30. House tidied by 11am ... No work now til tomorrow evening ... Currently slobbed on sofa watching judge judy and eating digestive biscuits...

Now this is nice for a day but what do people who don't have horses do...

Sis and I often ask each other this very question. We come to the conclusion, from observing non-horsey colleagues, friends and relations that many of them do exactly what you have done today - Sit and watch TV.

Or (not criticising you, OP) maybe they spend rather more time than I do on housework!

I think they spend longer putting on make up and styling hair and wearing jewelry. They can wear smartly coordinated clothes and polished, unmuddied shoes.
Takes me 5 minutes to drag a brush through my hair and grab a pair of breeches. The only time I look nice, is when I'm on holiday. It takes a lot of effort to look good.

Are you telling me stinking of horse & being covered in hair & mud isn't normal?

The endless cycle of commuting, working, cooking, cleaning, but they definitely do more socialising...

I don't own a horse just share one but I definitely socialise a lot less since I got him. My group of friends (not horsey) are always meeting up - I try to join them as much as possible but sometimes I'm just too tired even on non-horse days. I definitely had more time for weekends away visiting friends, going out for tea etc before horsey came into my life!

In the 7 months between packing work in and getting my new horse I spent my time enjoying not having to be on a train into London at just gone 5am, gardening, shopping with my sister, riding lessons, decorating my house and spending 10 weeks bumbling down the Pacific Coast on my bicycle.

I didn't watch TV except for the lunchtime news.

I breed and show chickens, this is actually more time consuming than my two ponies even when they are in during the winter!

It was surfing for me before I got Maddie :). We'd be down the beach all the time if we didn't have to be in work/uni - would often sleep in the van to save driving home so we could have a 5am surf with the sunrise.

We still surf, just maybe twice a week instead of twice a day, every day. I do miss it but wouldn't change Maddie for anything :).

When I had a break from riding I either flew gliders or took my son racing with his kart.
Gliding I left the house at 7am and if a good day (didn't land out in a field somewhere) I would get home around 10pm. If I did land out or went on a retrieve for someone else who had then it would be gone midnight.
Karting left house with son at 4pm on a Friday, returned home around 11pm sunday.
Horse are quite civilised. :)

I don't show chickens but I do have chickens, bantams, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl and an owl to deal with every day when I get to my yard, and quite frankly 4 stabled ponies are a doddle by comparison as there are constantly broody hens to be dealt with, something invariably needs nursing or relocating to where it is actually supposed to be as opposed to where it has put itself and no longer wants to be, and going round feeding & watering takes far longer than I actually allow for each day........... an then are the cute fluffy chicks that need to be petted, and my favourite bantams that need to be scooped up for a bit of a cuddle. No wonder I am always late for work!

This for me to! Only started riding again 18 months ago and I've been well and truly sucked in! I def use to go out more (can't remember the last time I had a proper night out) and watched much more TV.

They seem to wear a lot of makeup and have perfect hair/nails and outfits, this must take a lot of time. They also seem to go out more with friends and more holidays and love clothes shopping :)
Personally I would rather have the horses :)

This is just looking at the people I work with :)

When I had a break from horses I got baking and put lots of weight on:( fortunately I have a horse again and don't bake as much!

I have so often asked this question OP. Non-horsey folk think we're weird though, just yesterday someone at my toddler group asked if we were the house with the horses, I said yes and her response was "wow, how on earth do you fit them in?" - fit the horses in? Its more, how do I fit everything ELSE round the horses ;) I think we sacrifice a lot for our horses both in time and money, like I rarely go out but then on the odd occasion I do, the next day I think "god, what a waste all that money on booze was, I could have bought a bridle for that" - ha ha. My other half bought me a steamer the other day for the house, probably as a massive hint that I dont do enough housework (BORING) but what I really want is a new show jacket, if I sell it I wonder if he would notice...

I dont have a horse - but for all RS riders I can tell you that learning to ride, to handle horses, to understand arcane stuff like BD was almost a full time job for ten years. - And I am not done yet. Not too hot on different types of bits and the grackle (is that a noseband?) is still a mystery.
Hacking my fav. this sunny morning was like a holiday.

What do we do? Live a normal life! My girl has been gone nearly 2 years now and it was only after she had gone that I realised just how much she was taking out of my physically. I used to spend a minimum of 3 hours a day driving between home, her and work, and back again. I was never home before 7.30pm and used to leave in the morning at 7am at the earliest. Somehow I used to fit in my other hobbies but was permanently knackered without realising it. I play in 3 orchestras and have to practice 4 instruments plus my singing ( a choir rehearsal and a lesson every week). The only evening I'm not out is Friday. I shop, cook, clean the house and sort out the garden single handed. I didn't used to have the money to go out socially, and had to be up at 6 anyway but now I can go to the theatre or a concert if I choose to. I still get up at 6 and go to the gym for an hour before work and my days are still very long but I can have rest periods before I go back out. My back is happier and I have the time to go walking or cycling at weekends. I have more money than I know what to do with, having got used to living on the breadline for nearly 2 decades.
But I still miss the silly old fool every day and would give it all up to have her back :(

my sister spends her days off , cleanig and baking . Her house is pristine and so is she ...... She hates it if my kids get muddy / horse pooed lol

Some friends and I discussed this a few years ago. We decided from what we've seen of non-horsey friends that they mostly go shopping for things they don't need and get drunk frequently. Those with children seemed to mostly be their childrens slave! We were still baffled though as none of us could see the point of doing any of that.

This made me laugh, it sounds as though you're studying some other type of species!!
