For example... When I top up Buds straw I put the straw bag here whilst I make his bed up...

I don't even think about doing it and it doesn't bother Buds in slightest :rolleyes:

Anyone else blase around their laid back neddies?
 
Reg is so soppy, it's just generally standing and cuddling him or leaning on his bum and all the little things. Along comes Bee, and we're all remembering the correct way of doing things... (she's lovely, but like her personal space- if you leant on her bum she is likely to double barrel you!)
 
I leave the baby coblet loose grazing in open field whilst I'm doing other stuff....


Or just hop on the TB with no tack in the field and ride him round as we are, or up to the gate as it's a huge field all uphill and I hate walking :o
 
Tack up and then walk off and leave him loose in his stable while getting my boots and hat - one day he will probably roll with his saddle on! Leaving door open etc, walking behind him to pull rugs down :o one day ill learn!
 
I think it would be easier to say what I actually don't do automatically with mine! Only things I think about are how gorgeous she is, how perfect she is, or just generally enjoy watching her being herself. Stuff like clipping with her loose, or sitting down to trim legs, changing a rug with her loose in the field, piling stuff like rugs & haynets to go to the field etc just comes naturally. She's a sweetheart.
 
I do so many things without thinking because my horse has good manners on the ground. Yesterday when I got back from a hack someone was having trouble with a lock so I hop off, leave madam where she is and go and fiddle with the lock for ages. I forgot I'd left her until I turned around and spotted her.
 
My sister and I both do this - return from ride, open gate from track to stables. untack horses and put tack in car and sort wellie change etc whilst horse mooch about eating bits of grass. We don't bother shutting the gate as know they won't go out (they want to go back to their field mates not potter off out the yard).

I only considered it was a little 'odd' when a friend came over to ride, I did the usual get off, take saddle off and put in car leaving horse unattended near to the gate just with his bridle on. Friend grabbed hold of the bridle as she was obviously concerned he was loose! :)

He's like a big dog, he's not daft - why would he run off anywhere?
 
Leave her stood in her stable with the door open and no chain across. Usually while I'm messing about in the tack room, where she can still see me, but I have been known to go and fill nets up on the other side of the yard before now. She just stands there exactly the same as if the door was closed. :-)
I think I'm lucky shes good, but even if she did walk out, she'd only go far enough to rob the nearest hay net/feed bucket.

let her wonder round garden and eat what she wants - with garden gate open - but she'd never go too far she chickens out and runs back LOL

let her tell me if she wants more food and give her more (its fibre based so doesnt matter ;)) most she'd had was 6 scoops in one go LOL
let her eat out of the carrot box
oh the list goes on :o
 
I tell my blind mare which side I'm on, and that I'm about to touch her etc. without thinking about it at all now.

Jump on the boyfriend's horse while he's lying down in the field to make him stand up so I can get his rug off.

Ride the Royston up from the field in the pitch black with just a headcollar... usually galloping.

Never tie Roy up, and I never lead him around. His lead rope gets tied round his neck and then he either just follows me round, or he stays where he's put if you say "stand there".

Say "this one, next one" etc. to Roy when picking his feet out - he picks them up and holds them up for me.

Sit on the floor under Roy, Tuff and Kai's stomachs while clipping. Usually without a headcollar on.

At night, Roy is the last to come in. I pick his feet out, change his rugs, and then take his headcollar off and say "bedtime" and he puts himself to bed. I then go off and turn lights off, check the last field, and make breakfasts before I go back through the yard and shut his door.

Curl up on the floor and fall asleep with Roy when I feel sad.

Tack up loose in field. Saddle first. Bridle goes on at gate. One of these days, the saddle (and horse obviously) will disappear off over the hill...

Not happened so far, though :D
 
I have to remind myself not to pick all horses feet out from the same side. Most do it out of suprise, but otherwise I'd be saying 'oy' to some poor youngster who barely is used to the normal method.
 
Lead him in with the wheelbarrow after I've poo picked the field, usually with an empty haynet dangling somewhere too. Give him big scratches on his itchy spots, which he loves and causes the daftest camel faces. A friend of mine loops her lunge line up and hangs it on her lads ear, that always makes me smile.
 
My old boy always free ranges around the yard, not sure who would be more surprised, me or him, if I tied him up.

If I'm in the tack room and the door has blown shut, he will fling it open and stick his giant head in or stand outside wagging his head up and down - he knows the minty treats live in the tack room.

Let him take a carrot from between my teeth.

Will give him more food if he asks for it.

I never shut his stable door ever - he comes and goes as he wants.

When he was still competing/doing clinics etc, I would take him XC in a snaffle, no flash, no martingale, nothing. All 18hh of huge Belgian warmblood. Raised a few eyebrows - and he was always perfectly behaved and easier to control than the tack shop wearing others.

I protect his interests instinctively and fiercely. No, i wont lock him in a stable/tie him to a wall/stop him raiding my pockets - he's 23 and he deserves every good thing and every freedom I can give him.

Leave the door open when im wandering around the yard, leave him standing in the school while i set up poles or jumps, open the gate from the field and let him wander himself so i can stop the other horses barging out.. so many things haha, its good have a laid back nag :)
 
I have three chestnuts at the moment, of similar size and markings..... I was mucking them out one morning - when I thought to myself when I was in Chestnut no.2's stable - I was sure I brushed him the night before, so why was his face still very muddy....then I was in chestnut no 3's stable skipping him out - thinking, I had not noticed before, that he had two hind white socks.......
As the early morning fug began to clear from my brain - I did finally click that Ch 2 & 3 had switched stables sometime during the night (we do have a partion between them that is capable of opening....) They had switched stables, and closed the partition without me noticing.....doh!!
 
She gets a stupid amount of kisses and cuddles. I quite happily lean on her bum while she's eating or just stood in the field. I can let go of her and walk of to set poles or jumps up in the school. She'll just stand there and watch me or follow me up and down.

I certainly won't leave her unattended tied up for more than about two minutes as she's a serial rope breaker/tying up ring rip-out-of-wall-er! She breaks anything and everything if she's unattended! :(

Our mob all graze in the front/back yard for up to several hours, no front gate, none of them show the slightest interest in toddling off down the road.
 
Take his headcollar off after tacking up and just leave him standing there.
Letting him put himself in the stable at night.
Lean on his bum or cuddle it.
Talk to him constantly....not that strange imo but I get a lot of strange looks.
 
I tack mine up in the aisle. Once tacked with no tying, I walk off to the tack room to get my gear and they never move. I don't teach them this but somehow they all end up doing it, even the client horses for breaking. Untacking is the same. Washing legs in front of the barn the same. I park them throw up the rope and go get hose. Even the 2yo. They're smarter than me because I don't ever remember teaching any of this stuff, it just happened. Hmmm, maybe my riding would get better if I didn't try so hard. Food for thought!

I was thinking about this the other day, I am quite blaise and I did think hmmm should I really be doing this? Chloe and Amber are quite happy for me to crawl underneath them to fasten rugs etc, follow you round the school when poo picking etc.Does make you think.

Crawl under her whilst clipping between front legs
Leave her standing in the yard not tied up
Let her mooch on grass verges around farm yard whilst I do her stable (she comes back when she thinks I should have finished by cos she wants in her bed!)
Lead her and push wheelbarrow
Lead her with filled haynets hanging over her like a laden donkey! (Ssshhhh, she's a TB, not a donkey, don't tell her though otherwise she might think she should not be so docile!)
Let her 'lead herself' in whilst I have hold of the other horses (they are not mine but my stable mates so i always keep hold of them!)
 
Nothing taken for granted as I have had 2 years of baby horses! I know my old mare will let me wash her off without tieing her up or will stay put in her stable if I don't put her chain across... but I know I am doing it as it has been somewhat drilled into me to be aware around big babies and its AMAZING what you have to think about in order to stay safe...things like tightening up girths when on board or altering stirrups are a no no. about 6 months ago I went out on a hack with a friend on one of her horses and had forgotten what it was to ride a horse that actually knew what it was doing and didn't need constant attention!

Still coming out of the woods finally but still don't anything for granted with my 5 year old!
