What do you expect from your saddler (and recommendations Glos area)

I hold my hands up and admit to being pretty nieve and ignorant when I last had the saddler up, but having since read a lot more now believe said saddler didn't do a proper job.

At the time Tilly's saddle (wintec) wasn't fitting quite right and was between sizes and I found it very uncomfortable so we got a secondhand GP Barnsby. When saddler fitted her she told me that she was a MN but due to only being a baby it was much better to go for a M to allow growing room. She also took her templates "for future reference".

I was OK with this bit and accept that with a youngster everything is a bit of a compromise due to growing. I also accept that between fittings she is going to change and so what fits now might not in 6 months but its more what was doing during the fitting I feel annoyed about.

However, at the last fitting she merely put the Barnsby on her back, looked at it, said yes, it is a wee bit wide and would be fine with a prolite underneath, sold me a prolite (ordinary half pad) and charged me £95 for the fitting and the pad.

I have never been totally happy with the fit - yes it was better than the wintec but it has always lifted a bit (well about an inch) at the back if you push it up and in the last month has been slipping massively to the right and to top it off in the last fortnight she has had some lumps come up at the base of her wither just right of center of her spine, despite me being able to get a few fingers clearance down the gullet once mounted

Had my back man look at her today as I wasn't quite happy with her as she has been quite tense when asked to work on her right rein and he commented that she is coming along fine with no major concerns in terms of her - everything is muscling as it should be but as I suspected she finds it easier working on her left rein and as such needs to do a little more lateral work etc to just build up her muscles on the right - EXCEPT for a lot of tension at both the base of her wither and just behind where her saddle sits, which he is almost 100% is due to the saddle not being right.

Spoke to saddlers 10 days ago to request the saddler that is very much recommended (saddler L). They phoned me back this afternoon so have just come off the phone to the other saddler (saddler C) there and was basically told that L had passed my info onto C even though I had specifically requested him as "he isn't taking any new clients on". But my gut is telling me to avoid C like the plague and I feel she did a pretty rubbish job last time (I didn't so much as sit in the saddle, let alone girth her up and ride in it). C also told me on the phone that the problem was also likely to be my riding as I probably wasn't sitting square and was therefore pulling the saddle to the right but considering instructor has been watching me ride for 2 sessions a week for the last 8 weeks and I have specifically asked her to watch my straightness I am thinking this probably isn't the case, especially given the lumps, rising at the back and slipping to the right!

So back to the question (incase I'm expecting too much from my saddler) - what do you expect from a fitting? Would you expect to ride in the saddle and have the saddler watch its movement? Trot the horse up in it? Something else?

And can anyone recommend someone REALLY GOOD as now I have a small problem that needs addressing (a litlle tension and soreness basically which I feel terrible about!) in the Glos area?

Have never had experience of L, but to be honest have always found C very thourough and good.
Sorry to hear your experience has not been so good - have also heard good things about Morris from Colne Saddlery.

Good Luck

When I have saddles fitted I expect the saddler to assess it on the horse, both while just 'sat' and while girthed up.
If it is something difficult to fit I will usually then expect the saddler to watch the horse lunged in the saddle to check movement.
Then I will ride in it:- walk, trot, canter (and jump if possible) on both reins for around 20mins.

I have SC saddles now, so use Susan Pritt (on your recommendation

).

Alternatively, if I use our other saddlers I will expect him to leave me a range of saddles so that I can sort through them myself, and ride in the ones that are appropriate in my own time. He will then come back out and watch me ride in my preferred saddle and will make necessary adjustments following seeing me ride in it.

Laurance Pearman from Stroud Saddlery has been very good with Ferdie. Also very impressed by Peter Lewis at Pointings saddlery, although he has not always been easy to get an appointment with quickly.

Sadly it was Lawrence that I was after but I haven't even been able to speak to him, just get put straight back to C despite being very specific about who I wanted. Consequently it has really put me off Stroud as I feel that if they can't even carry out my basic requests then I'd really rather not give them my custom, especially when I feel very uncomfortable about using C and well, I just have no trust in her after last time and was very dissappointed with the service

Will google Pointings, don't know how far they'd be from me (I'm between jns 13 and 14 of the M5) but if they can come out then I'd be happy to speak to them, see what they think, what they do as part of a fitting and get Peter out if I feel happy with whatever is discussed on the phone.

Its sad really that I'm now so neurotic but I won't have my horses back screwed up because a saddler hasn't done a good job and I am to inexperienced to know what is right and what is wrong until its causing a problem

Bounty, who did you use before Susan? The only reason why I've ruled out SC saddles is that they just weren't right for me, which I know shouldn't be the priority but its difficult enough as it is teaching a youngster what you are trying to ask, without having to battle with your position the whole time too! Shame, as they were really lovely saddles.

Peter at Pointings used to come out to me at Breadstone, so you are not much further away by any means. I thought he was brilliant and have not a moments criticism about his saddle fitting - he had a good choice of saddles too. We only swapped to Lawrence because he was easier to get hold of as more local - but the case may well have changed. Definitely speak to Pointings, they were always v helpful.

I recently did a saddle fitting course and L was one of the instructors! A saddle should be ridden in to tell if it fits correctly. I have the same issue as you with saddlers slapping on a saddle and saying yeah if fits (hence I did the course).

You may have more joy explaining exactly why you are unhappy (saddle not seen ridden in). It would then be very difficult to fob you off. However you have to be prepared to put nose out of joint to get L to listen to you.

Hi Ginn,
I bought a new bates saddle and wasn't particularly happy with the fitting service (don't know why I didn't say that to the shop but hey ho!). So I got Rob Jenkins from Malvern Saddlery who is completely fantastic (www.saddlethathorse.com) and its now perfect. He also found a wonderful saddle for my mums horse. Maurice Emtage is also fab but fairly difficult to get hold of as he does a lot of trade stands in the summer. I am really pleased to see praise for Susan Pritt as she is coming to fit my SC saddle on Friday- hurray!!
good luck!

I use John and Richard Kington for my 'traditional' saddles, they *might* come as far as you if you beg and plead, but failing that you are more than welcome to bring Tills here for a couple of days as they are only 10mins away from me.
The number is 01531 890445.

Dont know about recommending saddlers in Glos - think everyone else has pretty much covered it all. I have also commented on the fit of your saddles, so you know my thoughts on that score.

This is what I do on a fitting when it is the first time I have seen a horse.

I look at the current saddle first. Check if the panels are straight and note whether flocking is evenly regulated or not. I can usually find pressure points here where the flocking has gone a bit and can find out if the horse is straight. Then I look at the horse's back to see if damage already caused from pressure points (usually has) and also to see muscle tone generally. At the point I will note the problems e.g. one sidedness, stiffness etc. Then I will see the horse trotted up, from behind and the side. Again noting movement.

Then I will at the saddle on the horse, no girth. If it fits, I will girth up. If still fitting I ask the rider to get on. If it still looks ok, I will ask the rider to walk and I will watch. Next trot, then canter. If the rider jumps, I will also watch some jumping. We only get to each stage if I am happy with the previous stage. Otherwise (as I only fit SC saddles) I will adjust the saddle and see it ridden in (as described above). I sometimes will ask the rider to do specific exercises so I can see how the horse moves. I also watch rider position and will point things out to the rider (such as length of stirrup etc).

When I see regular clients I pretty much run through the above but we talk about improvements etc. as well.

This is what I would expect any saddler to do. It can take 2 hours to adjust and fit a tricky horse or 30 mins to check a saddle but I charge the same fee.

As you know, I really rated Lawrence and am very honoured I got him I think, even though the saddle didnt turn out to be right for us long term!! Have heard good things about Maurice, but from my own experience would never use him. Peter at Pointings is good when you get him on a good day.......
