What do you feed your dog and why?

We have been reccomended royal canin by the breeder we went to see. I have just googled it and it is £18 a bag! Its like blue chip for a pooch ffs!
 
Beastie gets 100g of Royal Canin O.M split into two meals. Why? Because she is a porker and this is what is recommended by my vet

Midget and Tina both get a huge amount of food as they are working dogs and it is currently the shooting season

Midget eats a lot but doesn't tend to hold weight well but I am very pleased ow she currently looks. They are on Strangfood Feeds which is specifically for gundogs.
 
Dried chappie. They are naturally hyperactive so we needed a low protein food and this was one that was recommended to us. Also when they first went on it they had sensitive tums which settled really well with it. Its a complete food as well so it doesn't need supplementing and with having 2 it's more convenient to be able to buy a big bag rather than thousands of cans/packets of food.

If my boy wasn't such a sensitive sod I would have probably stuck to raw.

Skinners seems to be popular on here, good value and I did use it for a time but had to bring him off it again, see above ^^^^^

His sister would look good if I fed her cornflakes

It really does depend on the dog, horses for courses and all that, see what fits their needs best.
 
On tonights menu was pasta, grated carrot and Butchers Tripe. Run out of mix and plenty of pasta in the cupboard, excess of carrots and Butchers Tripe as it was the last tin....Off to Tesco tomorrow I think!
 
Mine is on James Wellbeloved puppy food - Turkey and rice. He gets half a small cupful, three times a day.

It was the best, ingredient wise, in the feed merchants without having to place a special order and pay almost £50 per sack.
 
Otto gets fed Skinners Field & Trial Duck & Rice. He has a really sensitive tummy and it's the only thing that doesn't go straight through him or make him itch. It's £20 for a 15kg sack.
I would like to feed raw, but I'm just a bit lazy to pull my finger out at the moment

We feed Oscars (www.oscars.co.uk - if you haven't heard of it, it's becasue it is only available home delivery) but as we have a feed/pet shop we've tried others, and none have done them as well and kept their coat shiney and scurf free as the Oscars maize fish and potato. So we have also fed F&T duck and rice, F&T salmon(both a good price for wheat gluten free) F&T crunchy, JWB turkey and rice, Royal Canin medium adult (JWB and RC are owned by the same parent company, and they were the worst for our dogs coats), Burns venison, Burns chicken and rice (again, went scurfy), Chudleys working crunch, and Autarky, another one at a good price for wheat gluten free - I think that's about it.

I can totally understand why people would feed BARF, but no way could I be bothered with it!

Tins and mixer are grim, look on the content of tins and you'll find all the popular brands ie the ones that you see the ads for, are about 80% water, and 4% meat. THe popular brands of complete foods ar the same - Bakers is the worst IMO, it's multi coloured kibble has 4% in the meat kibble only, that's less than 1% meat in the whole bag, plus a loads of E numbers - we can guarantee that most dogs that come to our shop with behavioural or skin problems are on Bakers!

Mine's on raw - switched her from dry about 5 months ago and she's never looked better. It's really not as much hassle as you might expect!
 
I feed my two (soon to be three!) Skinners F&T duck and rice - I feed it because it is hypoallergenic, and since I lost both my old greyhound and my old lurcher in 2008 with digestive-related conditions I am trying my best to ensure that it never happens again

Also now I have been feeding it a while I will stick with it forever because my dogs are in fantastic condition, like the food, process it well (no, ahem, excessive waste!) and are just the right weight

I used to use JWB which is a flippin rip off IMHO, plus the dogs didnt like it very much - RC is expensive, look online and you will find it far cheaper than in pet shops etc, or ask your pups breeder if she/he can get it for you through the breeder service - massive discount

A super easy kind of BARF diet.

Love it, would never change to anything else can't stand foods like bakers and chappie and stuff its like feeding your dog a constant diet of crisps.
 
Mine have Eukanuba for breakfast (actually they are on royal canin atm but thats cos we won 2 enormous sacks of it) and pm they have tripe with either rice or pasta.

Famiily dogs have bakers rubbish and mine has a simplified barf diet. He mainly has chicken carcusses, fish, veggies and whatever happens to be in the fridge (pasta, sausages, yoghurt etc.). He's a 10 month old lurcher so it's a case of constantly shovelling food into him to keep some weight on.

Raw - done it for about 2 years and both dogs are healthier for it. Dom although rough coated feels a lot softer and Bes just shines. Her stomach problems are also better. I find it really easy.

She also gets a scrambled or boiled egg twice a week, and tuna in sunflower oil when she's beating, or as an odd treat. Oh, and she eats quite a lot of carrots per day

I would doubt that Wainwrights is the same as JWB though as Pop's won't touch their stuff

We had a brief dalliance with raw over summer, but are now back on home-cooked organic turkey breast, veggies, Omega 3 and vits (made by my local pet store). With raw, I had two issues:

One, the smell of uncooked venison made me gag, and my apartment ponged all day because of it.

Two, Stella had an *insane* amount of energy, to the point where she was following me around with toys the whole time and started barking and jumping at dogs on the street. I swear she had more zip than my cousin's Border Collie.

The organic food suits her very well. She has got a teensy bit skinny over winter, but we supplement with rice pasta, sheep yoghurt, extra veggies and green tripe.
 
Mine have tinned Better by Nature Pedigree Chum at the mo, but used to have bakers complete.. but Alfie doesn't like dried food much.

Sure that's not a popular choice but they are both in good nick.

Chudleys working crunch....my dogs look fab, and I never need to do their anal glands and their crap is minimal and well formed, and they have fab coats and it's a good price for the quality.
 
Beta Active for both of mine as I have tried EVERYTHING else and my super fussy black one won't eat anything else!!
And it is really difficult keeping weight on him so I can't afford for him not to eat!
And my black and tan pupsy eats ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know enough about the RAW diet but I would like to find out more as I might be tempted to try it!

My Rottie has Chudleys Sensitive as most other foods give him a runny tummy! Supadog Sensitive is also v good but he's not so keen on it. Or Purina Sensitive if there isn't any Chudleys.
 
My Golden Retriever Ronnie has Royal Canin Golden Retriever
& My black lab Mac has Royal Canin Labrador Retriever

They were both on the raw diet until a couple of months ago when Ronnie started having neurological problems and in his bloods showed he had a dormant condition which is caused by raw food which can cause neurological problems

Took them off ASAP and Ronnies problems have now decreased slightly though we are still waiting on results for his MRI and the fluid taken from the base of his skull
