What do you pay for shavings?

Every time they are in, i order 10 even if i dont need that many so i can start putting some away so i dont end up like have most years when they run out a couple of months before Christmas. Ridiculous really.
 
Im lucky and work at a Sawmill, so I get my sawdust & shavings for free.

However we do also sell to the public its £12.00 inc VAT for a bulk bag of sawdust and the same for a bulk bag of shavings (from the planer so not full of lumps of wood).

If you have storage its always worth asking local sawmills :)

My Dad got beautiful pine shavings free for 20 years for me from the same place, he had to go in when the hopper was shut so would time his arrival for when the lads were on their break in the morning. He bought strong plastic bags from some company who manufactured them and I had some amazing shavings.

Admittedly as he was a service engineer he used to repair their machines when they broke down and only charge £10 an hour whereas a service engineer would probably charge twice that amount, but they never did him any favours by keeping any back for him, if he managed to be there at the right time and the right place he'd get them, if not others beat him to it.

But he never paid.

I guess everyone is jumping on the bandwagon now, seeing how expensive they are - sorry SDM not being rude there by the way!

Some timber yards use a company who collects the lot in one go and its made into biofuel, I think that's what this timber yard ended up doing as it was cheaper and easier for them, and they got paid to boot possibly.

How mean !! Bless him , he sounds like a top chap !

surprisingly we don't actually have many people that take them, its 4/5 regulars who always have , the £12 covers the cost of the builders bulk bags and the effort of loading them onto the vehicles for the customer. There's really nothing in it for us, but does get rid of a bi-product.

I have noticed an increase in calls asking if we do produce shavings as of recently though so may well expect that to change.
 
Paying £11 for a bale of mega-spread, I know there's cheaper shavings around but absolutely love these,they stay looking nice for far longer than any others I've tried. Also I can get them from the nearest shop to me which is on way to yard so I'm not spending anything on fuel when I get them!
 
I prefer fine flake shavings as find them much more absorbent. Paid just under £8 a bale at the starts of last winter. Went to get more a few weeks ago after running out and the place said they can no longer get them as they are from Sweden I think. Alternative fine flake shavings were £14.95 a bale!!!!!!!!!!!! Had to suck it up and pay £9.95 for larger flake stuff which is nowhere near as absorbent. Going to have to have a major rethink before next winter
 
I’m very fortunate that I can buy of one of the businesses I work for (poultry) and they get a lorry load at a time….£4.50 per bale. I count my blessings every time I buy a pallet 😊
