i am thrilled that the girl who used to help me with the ponies and taught the children to ride has asked for some work after going away to an event yard. in the meantime weve gone from one lr m&m to a retired lr m&m and 3 competition ponies including a ja that rears. she is small enough to get on all three and square them up and if she just took care of them it would leave me free to do my horse justice and help my husband run the business that pays for it all! she turns out to a very high standard and is a fantastic help on the floor but in a new relationship and wants to be at home again. i could only give her 3 hours a day average but she could walk to work. any ideas xx

I have two graduates mucking out at the moment both are brilliant and should get more than the £6.00 per hour I give them, I only need 2hrs a day but wish I could keep them both full time as they are both so good.

Our groom does a full day (muck out, replenish hay, water, turn out, catch in, change rugs as necessary) for £6 a horse. I guess if you have multiple horses, it should be less per horse. My old YO paid grooms £30-£40 a day, depending on day. (Sunday being £40 if only the one day worked)

I pay £10 a week for turn out, the occasional muck out.

Darrrrling I dont pay my grooms a penny - they get the scraps of oats the horrrses leeeave. If they dare look at me while I am on the yard they get a good whipping - bl00dy layabouts.

thank you its kinda what i thought. get her to do about 3 hours a day, mon to fri plus shows and pony club ad hoc. and pay £150 plus extra for shows and travelling? xx

£7 an hour for mine and she hunts one of my horses too and I pay for the sub + petrol and give her a lift at least once a week, usually more. I'm really against treating grooms like slaves, it's all too common and so unfair.

Can I come and work for you please?

:D! I didn't mention that I also make her run around muddy fields with my kids on their ponies, jumping cross country fences (this afternoon) ;)

Sadly I had to give up playing ponies and now have a grown up job. .

Although that sounds incredibly fun and I would probably do that part for free!

I'd pay £7 / hr for that, or £20-£25 for the session, eg not having to watch the clock, the job takes what it takes. Obviously if it ended up taking more than 30 mins extra then it goes onto extra hours.

£7.50/hour. Usually that is to feed, rug change, turnout and muck out 2 horses. £5 for the same, but excluding the muck out, as I guess it would only take 30mins. Not sure if that is the going rate or not, but I advertised a year ago at £7.50/hour and had a huge response.

My groom is employed Mon-Fri he does morning feed, turns out, mucks out, fills haynets and waterbuckets. I get him to do all this for no pay other than a kiss and a cuddle and a hot mug of tea over breakfast.............reader, I married him.

Omg what's all this # my groom # we are in 2010 they are not your groom they are an employee who does set tasks for an hourly rate. Lady footballers wife do u not think you should be asking an employment lawyer what ur obligations are legaly and how much you should be paying the staff member, not asking people on here

Talk about being condisending, and I find the term groom offensive

Well I was certainly never offended at being called a groom!! Come to that it doesn't bother me now either.

Neither was I but then I was a groom, not a domestic lacky on minimum wage plus 'how little can I get away with?'

I can't believe people saying it's a nice little job for someone! Yes someone who doesn't need to earn a living!

I think this is the horse equivalent of an au pair and should be renamed in the interests of actual grooms who earn a proper wage with accomodation, car, travel, training, etc.

Crikey:confused::rolleyes:

'about three hours a day' = 5 if you're lucky and then could you just keep an eye on the children while I nip out to Waitrose for an hour and half.
Plus Pony Club means - another three hours a week, with another mountain of tack to clean.
So by the time you've finished your 15 hours is going to be 25 or I'll eat my plaiting thread.

I don't object to anyone doing it, if they like, and can afford it, living at home with parents say, I just kind of object to its having the same job title as someone who takes sole charge of millions of pounds worth of horses, deals with complex veterinary programs, quarantines, admin, etc, and is paid a very respectable salary with good benefits.

It's like using the same term for a clerk and a solicitor, and then being able to swan round saying 'what do you pay your solicitor, dahling' when you mean office boy.

why 'for a groom'?
Because, in reality, it doesn't require a degree, does it? £10 per hr for something that would be classed as semi-skilled work is OK in my opinion

15 hours of work which probably entails not being able to do anything else, realistically, are you telling me you could live on £150 a week? Well done if you can.
Why would 3hrs a day stop anybody from getting another job? I mean, part time is part time, you can always get another job to go with it, surely.
