what do you pay your groom?

I can't believe people saying it's a nice little job for someone! Yes someone who doesn't need to earn a living!

.

Balls i just spent a whole ten mins writing a really long reply and then saw your apology lol...well done for being big enough to say sorry :D
the joy of benelyn, same with Night Nurse :p

Actually, RTE, I had a fine time as a groom, and don't particularly have a chip on my shoulder, however, I was rather rude last night, as I was particularly unwell and had decided to risk a glass of wine on top of medication.

I have apologised both publicly and privately for my rudeness.

Now, what's your excuse? :D

Sorry, I wasn't aware you had apologised, so I apologise ;)

Just as a thought whilst we're all in a jolly mood does anyone want to be my groom?
Looking after the Destroyer and the bad tempered 3 legged beast? For the rest of their lives or mine -whichever ends first and right now its likely to be mine?!!!
I can offer the content of my wallet which amounts to £2.50 and 13 euros, half a bottle of Chablis and a bottle of Benylin?!! :)

£150 a week for 15 hours? christ id have bitten your hand off!!

i worked 5 1/2 days a week - the full days being 7-6, for £444 a month. work that out!

60 hours per week @ £111 a week= £1.85 an hour

boss got away with it because we were in 'training' which meant we got to tack up her liveries horses and observe a lesson and basically slave away putting jumps up....

i now charge £15 an hour for exercising. almost 10 x what i used to get paid!

3 hours a day might really suit someone! a student, a mum who is driven mad sitting in the house all day while the kids are at school and husband is out working....
i think what the OP is offering is a good deal - good for you for not trying to take a lend of this person!

Baydale- on another subject, haven't seen you this season, are you out much?

Been out twice: opening meet (got soaked through to my knickers it rained so much:() and visited the South Notts (short day as it was so foggy:(). Think it must be a message from God. I'm having to fit stuff in round my chemo treatment though, in case you'd missed that bit? ;) How about you?

I have read the first four pages of this post and then I gave up.

Skewbald_again - What is wrong with being called a groom?! I am a self employed groom/rider and I have often been introduced to people as the groom. I feel proud to be called a groom, not offended. I take care and pride in what I do and always do everything to the best of my ability.

Footballers_wife - The hours you want your groom to work sounds very much like the hours I do for one of my boss's. I work three hours, four mornings a week mucking out, grooming and riding 2 horses. I am paid £7 an hour, and sometimes I do occasional weekend where I get paid £8 an hour. Is your groom self employed? If she is, you will have to ask her what she charges.

The life of a groom in England still sounds better than it is in the USA, where a great number are Mexican and Ecuadorian immigrants, many illegal, many paid peanuts and expected to travel to shows all across the country, all year round. Recently, the father of Hilary Dobbs (young showjumper; very successful) was convicted for using illegal immigrants at the family farm:

The person who used to help with mine at the weekend charged £4 muck out/hay/water, £1 t/o or b/i and £2 poo pick. She did keep her horse at the yard so was on hand anyway, but I thought that was very good value and she always did a great job. Other yards I know have people who charge £10-£13 for the above services for the day.

Oh no, not so good then, I hadn't heard no, hope you're ok :( Been out a few times when Jo has a horse spare for me, most times I have ended up swapping with Alex at 2nd horses and taking his home! Are you at the carol service this week? x

I do the odd evenings and mornings. I work at a small event yard and get horses tacked up, much out, turn out, bring in, groom, wash and lunge. i get £5.50 an hour (im 19) at my old job at sj yard i did 2 hours 6 days a week basically haying and mucking out and odd free lunge and I got £5 an hour

Haven't read all the posts, but I pay £10/hour for about 4hour/week and she works somewhere else for about 25hr/week and gets £6/hour.

I am happy to pay £10/hour on the condition that she is reliable, freelance and holds her own insurance. I don't want Mr Solicitor/Taxman coming after me - its worth paying enough to avoid that!!!

Really???
You think that £150 a week for 15 hours of work is not decent wage for a groom?

thats a good salary - in the bar I work in is min wage £5.90 an hour so that would only be £75 odd quid after tax for the same hours

Its a top up for on top of my normal salary but the above is far better than what the full time bar guys get

Erm, I've got a degree (well 2 actually), which I need for my job. I don't earn much more than £10ph (and I'm quite good at my job), however I'd be amazed if anyone wanted to pay me £10ph for being a groom, as I'd be useless. Surely you pay for what you get, or get paid what you are worth?!

We pay £10ph when we need help with the horses, which seems a bargain as it'd take me much longer!

Our grooms get £250 a week but work 5 days a week 8am-5pm. I'd say £10-15 an hour and the same if being asked to travel plus 40p a mile and little show extras (we get all food, drink etc covered)
