What do you sing when you hack??

When i go out hacking with my YO, we always end up singing Bohemian Rhapsody (pretty badly!) and 'The sun has got his hat on...' and we do the YMCA :)

On a mare called Ruby... can you guess.... 'Ruby' by the Kaiser Chiefs, proper belter song.

Wandering through a forest, cue RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBY AHHHHH AHHH AHHH, accompanied by some air guitaring, bit of drumming... team of (quite hot) mountain bikers decided at that exact moment to come past....

haha i can just imagine it!
good thread. my singing is absolutely execrable, but i sing loads of 80s and 90s stuff most of the time when i'm happy. if i'm on a really antsy horse and need to keep my breathing very regular to keep it calm i've discovered that "the Star Spangled Banner" has the perfect slow tempo (lots of long notes to hold), plus the lyrics are quite difficult to remember so that takes my mind off the idiot i'm riding! luckily there are no hedges around here for people to hide in, so i can shut up early when i see someone, to save their eardrums...

My pony has several short songs for various occasions and paces. I made them up to combat nerves, and still sing them to him frequently. They can help me find a good rhythm for him! But I found that they don't really require enough breath support, so if I really need to get my breathing under control (i.e., I'm freaked out), I resort to operatic arias. Mozart, Handel, or Puccini, mostly. :o

On very silly Welsh Cob it's A little less conversation, a little more action (please) or Follow the yellow brick road.

I didn't dare sing on the pony - he used to plant if I did :)

mine is also on my own from les misrables or defying gravity from wicked. i'm a singer so if im on hacks in company i end up being like a jukebox hahaha not sure if it works on the ned but its habit for me now lol, ive had quite a few run ins with dog walkers while im singing then i have to explain why on earth im singing to a horse lol x

Mine's really soppy - Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me by Gladys Knight and the Pips :) My Mom used to sing it to me as a kid, so now I sing it to my baby (Jasper! lol).

Someone once told me that to sing 'The Grand Old Duke of York' helps get a nice trotting rhythm, so I always sing that - either out loud when I used to go on my own or under my breath in company now :D

I like the idea of 'My Lovely Horse' too - I did think of that for my mobile ring-tone, but ended up with HOYS theme (A Musical Joke) :D:D

I have a selection of songs, this is because I tend to do things to death and either the horse or partner demand a change of tune.

Current favourites:-

El Paso, Marty Robbins.
Gypsy Rover, Clancy Brothers.
Fields of Athenrye, Paddy Rielly.
Ring of Fire, Cash.
Hurt, Cash.
Gods gonna cut you down, Cash.

99 Green Bottles, or whatever was on the radio in the car on the way into the yard. Worked quite well in combatting the Killer Phessies of Doom (they hid in the hedge and jumped out at us, and made me jump just as much as the horse, which is not helpful in these matters!) on my last share horse:)

OMG! We have Killer Pigeons of Doom with the same modus operandi, but I find that by singing anything, given how awful my singing is, I can flush them out early and avert disaster :)

lmao! i sing wheels on the bus, and show me the way to go home. I also have a wonderful knack of making up random songs much as other people have said, to the tune of Oh Danny Boy as its my boys full name (and including the actual version sung operatically when alone round the fields) such as (ahem)

Oh danny boy, the bus the bus is coming,
ho-opefully he'll not let off his breaks,
but if he does and yo-ou are a go-ood boy,
i'll not ma-ake you work for the rest of this riiiiiiiiide. (i thank you).

it keeps me calm, tbh he doesnt seem fussed but it settles me! god forbid anyone hears me tho, sound very special! :D

I sing everywhere, usually old Irish ballards or songs from The Sound of Music, or my favourites, 'Summertime' or 'Mad about the Boy. However, when on a long hack, I tend to find myself singing part three from Une Nuit A Paris by 10CC.....

' I was a stripper on the Champs Elysees. He was a gendarme in the gendaramerie, Going Oh la la la, oh la la la.....'

Brilliant song not brilliantly sung by me.

On our old yard we had a mile drive to get down to the road, and one day when i was hacking out on my own I decided to "make up" my own song which on consisted of LA LA LALA LAAAA whistle bang my legs LA LA LA, half way down the mile I realised there were two people walking their dog.. mortified isnt the word.

I also sing cross country, I broke my leg and a week after being out of cast I entered a big hunter trials. As you can imagine I was very unfit so was told to sing to keep breathing. Went the entire way round the course using "what you waiting what you waiting what you waiting.. foooooor" to count my strides (fooorrrrrr was going over the jump). I got a few strange looks but it worked as I won! :D ;)

Personal Jesus got hammered out a lot. Would creep out drivers with open windows as they passed by.... 'reach out and touch fate'

The worst is when I make up words to forgotten lyrics...

i'm an old cowhand from the rio grande.......

mozart goes well with the old dressage

when very happy, ' i'm just a simple country boy, money have i none, but i've got silver in the stars and gold in the morning sun'

Great thread : ). i sing medieval melodies with made up words, obvs with my girl's name featuring heavily : ). She doesn't seem to mind..... Glad to see so many replies! I was beginning to think I was the only one.... Gets lots of weird looks and haven't heard anyone else around here so far lol.

So glad I'm not the only one!

I usually sing the old nursery song "Horsey, horsey, don't you stop, just let your feet go clippety clop, your tail go swish and the wheels go round, giddy up we're homeward bound". Usually when trying to maintain a steady, calm, even trot when approaching a Very Scarey Wheelie Bin, or an Even Scarier Garden Refuse Sack. I often find myself using it in the school too, particularly when trying to keep calm on a windy day in the face of the Terrifying Hedge Monster.:p

Never! Well not since I was warbling some tuneless made up rubbish and a cyclist sneaked up behind me and nearly fell off his bike laughing at me :o

I have always sung humpty dumpty, never thought any more of that choice until I told my daughter last week to sing after her fall, and she asked ' what song' that I realised that it us probably not the best choice :)

I still go with humpty dumpty though :D

My daughter rode my horse today and made up a little song (pronounce as kids do as they start school) "Ch" "e" "st" "e" "r" (repeat several times) Chester is a BTec! Big joke at home that she is doing GCSE PE and her friend is doing BTec, so now anything inferior at home is BTec - including MY horse!!! All very tongue in cheek. So yes we do sing!
She was also playing "sneak past horses in other fields without being seen" on him and then proudly announced results after they had "tip toed" past. In total 7 out of 8 saw them, I did point out that this could have been due to her singing "sneaky, sneaky" as she lent on his neck and "encouraged" him to participate in the game!!!
Oh what fun you can have when school finishes early.:)

Normally whatever it is on the IPOD. Only use it when i get out on to the farm tracks as the really dont want to sing to passing cars.

Monty likes a bit of Muse, Glee or beyonce.. but he's not really fussy. xx
