I've got knackered knees and hips. I'm not very disciplined when it comes to taking pills but I reckon I'm going to try some kind of joint supplement. So, do you take any of these.. glucosamine, condroitin, cod liver oil, or anything else that makes a difference to you?

Thanks :)

I don't have bad hips but I found as I'm getting older my knees hurt on descending stairs, or any where I put tension on them like walking down a hill.
I started taking Stinging Nettle tablets and after a week or two I found the pain had gone completely.

Stinging nettles are a natural anti inflammatory, they certainly work for me, just give them time to work as like a lot of herbal remedies it is subtle and takes time to work effectively, Oz

will be watching this one, I dont take anything but suffer from bad knee pain.

I twisted my ankle badly in 2007, never took care of it to help it heel, rode too soon etc, ankle is now fine but I have twisted every muscle etc and it now shows in knee pain. If I am doing a sponsored ride I take strong pain killers but that only helps a little, only made it half way round the last one i done.

luckily it only hurts from ride of 2 hours onwards, have to crack it in my first trot, to release the stiffness ! doctors have said there is nothing that can be done, found biking helps it stronger but it is still weak.

they say i will be crippled in a few years ! Tried physio and it helped but cant afford it
x

I've got anti-inflammatories on prescription. Ibuprofen did nothing for me - wasn't strong enough. If taken over a two week period the pain is dampened.

I am currently on Naproxen on prescription - I have been taking it for a week - so far no change. I have tried codeine at high strength - no change, diclofenac - no change.
Copious pints of cider........heaven! I have had so much of it tonight, I am virtually numb....in fact not even sure if my typing is clear or not. But none of this Magners rubbish - you need proper traditional cider......good luck!

Another vote for human cortaflex - well from my husband not me!

He broke his neck a few years ago & now has a cage in it, so at times he really suffers. He is not one to complain about anything and he won't take any medication unless completely necessary. A while ago he had to 'give in' as he puts it & started taking Cortaflex which has made a huge difference, and he certainly knows when he has forgotten to take it for a few days.

Has he tried cider?

i take glucosamine, am knackered if i forget to take it! Takes a couple weeks to build up in system (and also takes a couple of weeks to come out once you stop taking it so you dont notice till its too late!) I get mine from here:
http://www.healthspan.co.uk/
Its SOOOOO much cheaper than the high street as there is no tax!!

I too use Healthspan glucosamine - as I'm vegetarian, I take just glucosamine, but a mix of that with MSN and chondroitin is supposed to be best. There also seems to be a recommendation for rosehips too (also from healthspan!).

I had two knee ops a couple of years ago - when knee flared up again, the specialist asked how much glucosamine I was taking, when I said none he said take at least double the recommended amount, so now I take 3000mg a day. I never had pain, but am reluctant to stop taking it, maybe it's helping and I just don't know!!

Thanks for all your really helpful replies, I've made a list and will be trialling them all...well maybe not the cider, HH, I got very drunk on 3 halves when I was 16 and I've never been able to touch it since!:o

Mother in law swears by cider apple vinegar mixed with lemon, honey and hot water.

Glucosamine needs to be taken with chondroitin to work properly. Most sources of chondroitin are battery chicken and shark. Depends how ethical/desperate you are.

MSM is apparently amazing.

Google turmeric: a friend swears her veteran maxi cob has zero arthritic symptoms after taking it. All of my dogs are on it. Two friends at the yard have just put their horses on it.

Voltarol painkillers are the only thing that touch pain for me and don't aggravate my ulcer. Obviously available from the chemist.

Lay off tomato products: they exacerbate arthritis.

I know that recent studies have shown that glucosamine has no effect on joint pain. This is why you can no longer get in prescription from a doctor (I used to work in prescriptions) but I have known patients who swear by it! I take Tramadoll if my joints are really bad (but that is prescription) over the counter meds can work but they need to be taken regularly over a long period to build up the levels to truly work.

Good luck though! xx

Out of interest what dose of turmeric would you recommend? Have heard good things about it before and as my dog has HD, I have arthritic knees and I suspect my horse is a little arthritic too I could possibly buy in bulk! ;)

I'm going in for a hip op very soon. I take glucosamine and cod liver oil and I'm constantly on pain killers at the moment. Prevention is better than a cure - go see your gp or a good health shop or a pharmasist and ask their advise.

£2.37 for 400g in Asda, also called Haldi. Better to buy from the Internet, according to my friend.

She said she uses a 'normal' supplement scoop, whatever that is! I'd look at a loading dose of a supplement scoop for the first 6 weeks for the horse then half that. For dog's, I'd think a teaspoon two/three times a week. I'll pm you re other supplements-one of my dogs has HD.

For you, teaspoon a day, I suppose.

That's great, thanks, will give it a go and let you know how we all get on - hopefully we'll be pain-free if a little bit yellow :)

Only cod liver oil and MSM, not sure if they help but am reluctant to stop in case they are. One hand is very bad at the moment, which is bizarre, it's warm now and I hurt  -15C every day for months - nada! Go figure!

This is interesting and has a 'condition' list so easy to navigate.

I second the tumeric I give it to my veteran pony ( small 5mil scoop ) and he's like a spring chicken :D

For my arthritis I find taking 500mg paracetomal ( two ) and one 400mg iboprofen together work well three times a day. you can buy own brands fairly cheaply now ( I buy paracetomal from Aldi or Lidl! )

I haven't read the whole thread but apologies if this has been mentioned.

Most anti-inflamatories (i.e. ibruprofen etc) take a day or two at least to work as they build up so don't take a simple anti-inflmatory and expect immediate results unless it has a painkiller mixed in. It is also really important to take them after some food immdiately after, not 2hours after like my mate thought was fine) they can do nasty things to your tummy.

I give a vote to glucosamine, my grandma swears by it, she has patches instead of pills though.

diclofenic, on prescription. Fab stuff ! hubs get joint pain in his hips and shoulders, and if he takes it, the pain goes in a matter of a week. :)

Iburofen (one every night), whisky!, bicycling, heat (as in hotwater bottle), deep hot baths. Tried glucosamine, cod liver oil etc. but they never really helped. Gentle constant activity also helps. Knees ache most of the time riding, and I'm now just a happy hacker. But the biking is, I think, starting to help quite a bit - nothing strenuous though!!
