Hey all

Well i have had a pretty rubbish week this last week.
Last week i found out i may never be able to ride my fab horse again due to chronic laminitis, so i have been rather stressed and upset about that to say the least.

Plus i have had a rotten cold all week, which i still have.
Next i get a text from YO telling me my mare had to get out of her small paddock she has had the last week or so and go back out into the field as there is not enough land! (10 acres, with 2 cobs, 2 section A's and one big horse, you decide).

Now the vet advised she be kept on a bare paddock with bute for next 20 days and see how she gets on, plus heartbar shoes, which are now on. Vet just generally advised for me to manage it and avoid an acute attack as you would expect.

So i get in a panick thinking i cannot turn my mare out onto the summer paddock, not even for a few hours as not only does the grass need to be restricted but so does the movement.

Now the worst part was we had the perfect paddock which i was advised was for use when needs be, but it was trashed over winter, not by my horse as she was not allowed in there, 3 horses were kept in it for no other reason than laziness as its close to the stables.

Anyway, this has all resulted in me having to find a new yard in 48hrs, where they can give a small turnout area, as alot of yards i have known will offer with a sick horse.
New yard is basic but fantastic people, and the landowner has a laminitc so she is helping me immensely.
Thankfully it was on my last day holiday today so i managed to get transport and get her there today.

At first i think i was rather shocked by all this, especially as i thought myself and YO were not only good friends, but as i am a fairly longstanding livery who had a sick horse, i do not understand why they could not help me out.
If i had come to the yard and there had never been mention that we could use the small paddock for such things then ok, but the rules seemed to change often.
I am very sad but very glad to be out of there now given this attitude. At first i did not feel much about it, but now i do feel angry for how i have been treated

What would you think? Would you be upset by it all?

Sorry for the long rant *cookies* for getting this far

Yes i think this is out of order, most yards i've experienced have had some sort of 'sin bin' for this purpose, or have at least accommodated in some way or other, hopefully she will settle quicckly in the new yard.

Yes hun I would be upset as well, esp as you consider your ex YO as a good friend. No point dwelling on it now though at least you have managed to find a new yard and hope your horse settles in well x
hope your cold goes away as well

Know just how you feel. I have been at my current yard for over 5 years, but when I had to keep one on box rest for just under 4 weeks due to acute pastern dermatitis it was a major issue - I got so much grief - "he isn't hopping lame so I can't understand why he has to be in". Let's just say I'm moving in a few days.

Thanks everyone, i was so shocked it took almost 2days for me to realise i was actually a bit peeved, only today upon moving did i think, hang on, but hey ho, we are moved to a small place with one other mare, mare's owner is fab and so is landowner, been so helpful today and thoughtful of my poorly girly.

She seemed fairly settled bless her little cotton socks, so hopefully when she can get out in the field with the other mare in a week or a few, however long it takes she will be happy as larry, they seemed to quite like one another, though my flirty mare has not clicked yet that she is in fact a mare!
And good luck with your move hairycob

When oh when will YO's come to realise that things like this are a welfare issue?

This is what i thought, so sad that a landowner cannot accommodate such issues.
I know its easy for me to say but if i were a yard owner i would have a small 'sick horse paddock', simple, and most places i have heard of do offer something

Be mad

Then effectively get over it and move on

. Life is too short and you won't change the YO and they won't care what you think

. I had a similar situation. Had a good rant, and then moved on

I know some good yard owners (and yes that includes You - I know she'll read this lol), but on the whole...

So sorry to hear of your situation and I am really shocked to hear of YO's lack of care and support.

I hope all goes well at your new yard and very best wishes for you and horsey x

In fairness to the YO, if I had a field that had been trashed, for whatever reason, I would need to rest that field for a period of time and not be able to use it for a horse. We had to re-seed one of the injury paddock one winter, we had horses who were not sick, but who were fighting with another horse, in there. We couldn't offer it as a sickness turnout paddock as we had spent a fortune re-seeing it so it could be used again. I cna understand your frustration tho, the benefit of 20-20 hindesight I guess.

You have moved and this is the best thing for your horse, so you should be proud of yourself for putting yourself out for your horses needs. many people wouldnt!
Unfortunately you hear it on this forum time and time again, so many YO/YM are unbelievably sh1t! It is incredibly stressful having an ill horse and if your friend/YO wont recognise this then you are better off moving anyway.
Hope you feel better soon

I had a simialr problem a few years ago. My old mare was diagnosed with arthirtus and ringbone. She was an exceptionally good doer and as I couldnt ride her was advised to restrict her grazing but too keep her out rather than stable her. I fenced off part of my allocated padock for her with the YO agreement, within a couple of weeks they were complaining that it looked unsightly and it wouod ruin the grass. Did it heckers like. I was ordered to take it down. We moved! Best thing I ever did.

Thanks everyone.
I understand what you mean emma69, but it was the YO's horses that trashed this paddock, but YO can do what they want i suppose, shame it turned out like this though, i am thoroughly disappointed, but i feel i will get over it, sad to leave my friend behind there, but we were left with no choice.
At the end of the day the yard was managed very badly indeed in all my time there. shame as its a lovely little yard-thats why i stayed for the time i did, the YO really needs to go on a short course and learn how to run a livery yard imho.

My mare seemed happy as larry this morning bless her in her new home, and waiting for her next haynet, so lets just see how she goes with that bad foot...
