What do you think of the 'riding' fashion?

I entirely agree with OP it does irritate me. I don't mind imitation jodhpur boots or flat caps etc but the full garb complete with fake jodhpurs like in the wedding pic especially when worn with ugg boots or heels they just look so ridiculous! I blame topshop tbh for the masses now wearing these silly imitation riding clothes. I think the main thing is I get dressed up out of my riding clothes to go out and make an effort to look a bit different and then Im surrounded by the blinking same look Im avoiding by cleaning up!

I think one of the biggest horrors has got to be the chavs taking over barbour. It was bad enough when stores like john lewis started to stock it and then you got all those awful rip off lookalikes :(. but now barbours actually designing coats to appeal to chavs! I spotted a barbour store on my way to view a horse for sale and called in and saw a girl in there in the middle of the day who could have easily passed for a prostitute and was with her chavvy tracksuit wearing parents, the look on the store managers face was priceless! :D :(.

I will be upset if dubarries go down a similar route :( its ruined barbour slightly for me and really would put me off dubarries i think.

Fashion is something that the rest of the world seems to get excited about. For me, getting ready to go out is really just a question of scraping the very worst of the mud off

Ditto:D

I wish I still had my original green quilted jacket from 1983......I think that would be whatsit called.....not retro.....uhmm....vintage! Yeah......vintage.

We should sell our old stinky worn out stuff on ebay as ''vintage retro-equo-chic''

(thats mine...I've copyrighted it.....now, where's Gok......)

That's wonderful! :D

I suppose none of you are old enough to remember the same trend in the '70s? I remember going out in a 'hacking jacket' and my grandad's flat cap! (maybe 1974) I thought I was the bees knees!

Funny though - I don't mind being out and about in jodhs & boots, but wouldn't be seen dead in skin tight leggins! What's the diff?

Lol!! When I started riding I was kitted out thanks to the local jumble sales and so often had 'nearly but not quite' outfits - I remember wearing a pair of beige ridge knit leggings (nice high waist) with fashionable pretend knee patches!!! God knows what I must have looked like!

Well it has it’s pro’s and con’s….

Can’t stand all these fake Barbers that people are wearing, I’m not referring to the quilt riding style jackets that you can pick up in say Dorothy Perkins etc, I mean those horrid back jackets that say Barbour on them, they’ve never seen Barbour, talk about chavvy.

I did spot a lovely pair of long leather brown boots (riding style fashion type boots) but the thing is they actually looked like a beautiful pair of well crafted Italian riding boots, (flat heal, zip up the back), in a lovely brown colour with the elastic (that you have in joddy boots) that ran all the way up the out side, they would have been £400 in a horse shop! totally gorgeous and I’d so wanted to buy them just for riding in.....only thing is I couldn’t get the dam things zipped up my calf and that was with a pair of tights on let alone jods underneith, obviously these boots were made for a size zero Vogue model! not little old me *sobs*

On the up side, there’s some nice brown and mustard coloured leggings (joddy stylee) in Peacocks which I might have to purchase for riding in, funny thing is I wouldn’t dream of wearing them as a fashion item.

Ha ha. It winds me up too. A) because Beaty without function is stoopit. B) because I don't gave a horse so can't justify buying any of the lovely horsey brands I like, and and all the clots trundling around remind me of if and c) I
am envious because they can afford Barbour/ariat/ joules etc with no need for it and I can't!

Annielusian - where in mk are you? :)

srsly? I have a couple of awesome woollen barbour jumpers that are unrivalled in winter - warm, water repellant (how does good quality wool do that, anyway?) and totally unfashionable. I will be seriously annoyed if I can never get another one like them :(

I've noticed this trend myself: seems like women can't go out in public these days without skin tight bottoms! Although the woman in the picture certainly has the figure to pull off that kind of outfit, she looks like she's trying too hard with those heels.

i thought i was the only person that didnt like it! haha
i've just got to laugh at the 'plastics' (popular, always on trend people) that are wearing equestrian chic, that have laughed at me and taken the mick out of me for horse riding.. now its them looking silly in my weekend clothes not the other way around!

I bow to her mastery of those killer heels....any self respecting horsewoman simply would not be able to walk unaided in them......

wait what? which shops are selling these type of clothes, Im curious now.
Can't say I've noticed it myself tbh ( but I'm a hermit so can't really comment ha) tho I have seen people wearing gilets often now I think about it.

But how hilarious really, but I'm all up for it if I can get some bargin clothing for riding! wouldn't be seen dead in it casually tho, riding wear is ugly at the best of times.

Have a look in clarks, when I went past the window display a month or so ago I thought a tack shop had opened in the westfield!

i was thinking more gamekeeper-esque myself, complete with the waxed chaps over tweeds and pheasant blood on my face as makeup...

what do u think?

FWIT i quite like the trend... it gives me something to do whilst walking about town, deciding which ones have never been near a horse and which ones are genuine lol :D:D

Perhaps people have to pass the 'sniff-test' prior to being allowed in....:D

I also think they should offer to hoover the straw/shavings off you and provide a boot wash to prevent any muddy foot prints being left across their floor!

I do rinse my boots off before I leave the yard, just in case you all think bad of me, but there is always a bit of mud that seems to hang on then drop off when there is a nice clean floor present

I actually quite like it. I had to drop something to a friends on the way back from the yard the other day, She looked me up and down and said "oh, you look really nice, where are the leggins from?"

I'm gonna pick up a cheapo quilted jacket too! :p

This made me giggle! I happened to pop into Tesco the other week, having come back / going to the horses so wearing my beautiful but filthy Toggi Canyon boots (that I'm very proud of) and various other manky horsey paraphernalia. As soon as I walked in I clocked a girl wearing a really nice, very new tweed jacket, then was almost blinded by her brand new, shiny fitted long boots which had clearly never seen a horse in their life, let alone a puddle! I even dragged my OH over to have a sneaky peak as I couldn't believe it lol! I didn't realise there was a horsey 'fashion' going on until I saw that hehe!

I don't really see why it is an issue, who cares if people want to dress like us horse folk?
I can imagine I would probably be one of the people you would all pick out as 'never been near a horse in her life' if you saw me out with my friends (most of whom don't ride but all wear this sort of thing too - we are in our early 20s) but I don't really care either way.
Im prettty sure that people aren't trying to pretend that they are horsey they are just wearing what is in fashion at the moment because they like it. It will soon pass and then we can go back to being the only ones who wear gilets, jods & quilted jackets.

My friend is like this. She just bought some tan riding type boots from primark and always is like oooh I love your boots when I wear my ariat windermere (dubary look a likes). 2 of my friends have hacking jackets as well *smacks face with hand* and they are both non horsey.

The only thing I like is the nice gilets and horsey type coats in new look for an actual reasonable price. Unlike the massively inflated prices of horse clothing in saddlerys.

Im looking forward to raiding the local charity shops for some waxed/padded jacket bargains when this 'horse rider' fashion becomes victim to the 'wear only whilst in fashion' culture ;)

Re OP.Does it all really matter, it's their choice of what to wear. It does no harm & could be seen as a compliment.

Of course it does no harm. I've seen it mentioned and noticed it myself, so I thought I'd see if anyone else had noticed and think it's funny too.
Just a bit of fun.

*twitches* these posts make me come over all Meryl Streep in Devil Wears Prada. Fashion has influences. Some of those may occasionally be connected to your hobby. Of course they're not going to be good enough to ride in that ouldnt be very practical or as attractive.Like people who moan that catwalk/couture collections are daft looking/impractical. Of course that is the whole point. The influences will trickle down into the ready to wear collections and eventually the high street. Calm down, in a few months it will be back to stars, or nautical and you won't have to worry about undeserving people wearing your uniform.
