What do you think of the 'riding' fashion?

That sounds a lot snarkier than it was meant to, I'm using my phone so I'll blame that. ;)

Although I do think its stupid to think that only horsey people wear tweed.

What annoys me is that the "riding" boots have zips up the inside. I can't ride with a zipper sticking in my leg.

Though I do believe that MY fat arse clad in grubby jodhs has actually spawned this fashion hysteria.

I rather like those jodhs in the photo upthread, wonder if the suede full seat is more stretchy than those full seats I've tried in official jodhs?

I remember when riding stuff was fashionable in the early 90's when I was a young teenager and remember cutting out all the "riding wear" photos out of my teen fashion magazines and making a collage for school. I felt so happy that riding stuff was in as I could get horsey shorts and "jods" from anywhere.

One pair of jods I got from a regular clothing store, looked EXACTLY like the real thing, even with suede knee patches that I rode in them for lessons. They weren't a riding brand but just a normal fashion brand and they were only $9.99 (this was in Canada). After I had a growth spurt and they didn't fit me anymore, I ended up selling them to a consignment tack store for more than what i paid for them! :D

I got my hopes up last year when side saddle habits made a brief appearance on the catwalk. I thought maybe that I finally be fashionable again and wear my habits out!!

There is a lot of naf "riding wear" out there though that is totally overpriced just because it's in a regular fashion shop. I was in John Lewis in Leicester the other week and in the shoe section, lo and behold, they had RUBBER RIDING BOOTS for £80!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not even the nice Aigle ones but ultra cheap ones that you would buy if you were a beginner riding once a week with the thin jersey lining stuck inside to the vinyl that sell for £20 in any tack shop or a couple of quid used!!

Hmmm, just found them on the John Lewis website and they were selling for "only" £65 on there but are now reduced to £39 but you can see that Kurt Geiger has nicked the mould for the cheapo riding boots and rebranded them as KG:

The fashion jods are bloody awful!
A girl I know owns a pair of fashion boots that are long and black with a brown top to them. I promptly pointed out that that colour of boot is traditionally for males only. :p
Quilted jackets (although I own a Barbour and yes, I wear it to the shops) I do not own as a 'fashion' item, I wear mine to the yard and everywhere, it's a good decent coat that I can put on to keep me warm and dry - it's not a fashion statement! The copies are awful, it demoralises my poor Barbour.

Yep I so know what you mean. Its a bit like the woman who have a 4x4 to take the child to school can not drive it, when it snows its in the drive and they are always so clean not a spot of MUD in sight !!!!

It bugs the life out of me! People to me seem to try and be "country" when they wear it. Why are they wearing what i wear to muck out a stable and compete?!
Urgghhh! There are some people i know who are complete barbie dolls yet they have full on outdoor jackets that look country or equestrian but they would never need it other than for the purpose of fashion!

I don't know why everyone is getting so wound up. Its just clothes at the end of the day. It's like saying you can't wear a leather jacket unless you own a motor bike. All silliness IMO, tbh it all sounds very snobbish.

Not sure if this counts as the opposite point of view - it's almost opposite, but I have my reasons for wearing it.

I only got back into riding last month after a break of three years. I wore three or four pairs of jodhpurs out during that break though. Real jodhs from robinsons, not some rubbish from internacionale or new look!

My 'other' hobby is cycle touring, and I found my denim jodhpurs brilliant for it - comfy on the bike, enough stretch to move with me, no bits flapping about near my chain rings and they look a darn sight better than shiny lycra - I can wander round tourist attractions or pop into the supermarket without embarrassment! I cycled across Germany and Wales with two pairs. (on separate trips, obviously - both pairs on both trips) I don't wear my riding boots though, because there's just not enough movement in the ankle - that's where cheap, trendy boots win, and again, I've worn them to cycle across countries.

Proof | and more proof (sorry, there are no horses in these pics - hence links, not photos)

In short, I'm very glad that it's acceptable to wear my riding gear even when I'm not riding, even if it's for years at a time! I'm sure I wouldn't feel the same way if shiny lycra in gaudy colours became trendy!

Oh good, fashion has finally caught up with me then, as if I give a toot ;) It will pass me by in the blink of an eye soon enough no doubt.

I've been wearing my never seen mud 'in waiting' yard boots to town for years, always being stopped to ask where I got them.

I couldn't care less what version people wear, if it makes them feel good then that's just great. :) Live and let live and all that.

What bugs me more than anything is name/brand dropping -

So flaming what?
I am so not impressed whether your boots are bespoke by Davies, or Robinsons specials, whether your engagement ring came from 'Peoples' or 'Tiffany'
I couldn't give a stuff whether your purse is an LV, Chanel, Guess or Coach original or a street market knockoff.

I appreciate quality and good workmanship as much as the next person but it doesn't make me think any more or less of a person because they aren't wearing/using the real McCoy.

Just to clarify: I know about fashion, I know it's not here to stay and I know it'll be back, whether that be next summer, or in 30yrs time.
Chinese people thought the same when everyone was wearing Chinese dresses. Some hated it and thought we looked stupid, others didn't care in the slightest. Same with Indian fashion and cowboy fashion, etc etc.

I don't need to calm down, I don't know if you haven't figured it out (I know, emotions don't always translate well) that my threads are often jokey and light hearted. I know I said it annoys me, but when I see them, I just think "Oh, haha there's another one!" I don't fly into a rage.

So, don't worry guys :p I'm not in a fury over a silly fashion, haha!

HA! just had a thought: for whining about fake fashion, just type "fakengers" into your favourite search engine. No one can b*tch like a bike messenger!

I had some chav pushing a buggy ask where I had bought my Dubarrys, I actually told her i didn't think she could afford them on her dole money.

Another time I was tittered at in a shop because my jacket and boots were manky and was asked if I had any respect for my clothes and things I own - YES but these as HORSEY clothes!

Yikes! That's nice!

Have you ever thought how that sounds? How do you know she was on the dole?

What was wrong with just saying "Dubarry Ireland, you'll find them online" and letting her decide how she spends her money? Do you feel the need to interfere in other people's finances often? Given the number of people I see in Ugg boots, or with iphones, or driving brand new prestige cars or whatever plenty of people are prepared to spend big money on fashion items. I'd love to know how they justify it but it is none of my business.

Wow, you actually told someone you didn't think they could afford something? That's a bit presumptuous and outspoken isn't it? Most chavs I know have cashflow that makes me green with envy actually, the black economy is always booming

The fashion has been 'in' before, and will be again.

It passes us by here in a remote farming village, where jods are always thought a bit 'smart' to the usual boiler suits:D Anyway, my horse is the only one to see me in yard clothes and she's only interested in what's in the pockets not the cut of them.

I'm looking forward to getting some cheap gilets from the charity shops next year then when the fashion has passed.

I'm PMSL that a lot of you seem to think that you can 'only' wear Dubarry's if you are horsey.
Dubarrys have been around for 100's of years & started out as a high fashion boot :) they also have deep roots in sailing.
It is only recently they have become the uniform of the equestrian market!

I cannot believe someone would be so rude to tell a 'chav' (my god I hate that word) that they couldn't afford their boots.....no wonder horse owners get the reputation for being snobs [le sigh]

Oh & I think also Gilets were being worn by hikers, cyclists & runners long before they became popular equestrian wear....you could say we stole that idea from them.
I love the new equestrian style, I have a beautiful joules tweed that isn't going anywhere near mucking out that I wear out & about....with long, riding style boots :D

Any one else noticed that the blonde presenter on Country File (sorry I'm hopeless with names!) and the lady bone specialist on Timeteam both wear jods regularly on those programmes???
