What do you think of this horse?

Wouldn't say he was cheap.

If he's genuine and has the scope but is still green, which he must be since he was only backed in the summer, then its a fair price but don't think I would want to pay more.
It says he's had breaks and still fit all of that in?! Can only have been backed a maximum of 8 months so I wouldn't expect he to be as well schooled as it sounds tbh!

Good luck :)

I'd say considering he is only 5, no record (just potential) and looks incredibly green jumping, I'd say he is a bit overpriced... I'd say £3k tops having seen what others who are less green are going for

I'd agree with this. Yes he sounds like a nice chap but there's nothing in that advert that makes me think he is worth nearly 5k.

Size would put me off he is going to reach 17 hands pretty quickly, will limit u on transport options and unless u r very tall the getting on when plaited up and hopping off to do gates if need be could be a nightmare. I would prob go for something with a bit more bone for hunting. Nice though

Thanks Meesha, I'm used to a big one.
D
;-) I've got a nice big bucket for plaiting and have got used to only getting off where I've got something to climb on to get back on!

I know what you mean about bone. My current horse is more chunky but current pack (big hedge, grass, fox hounds) seem to have 3/4 bred types and they see all huge!! So I think he should fit the bill. He is finer than what I'd ideally want though.

Dealer and I would bet a pound the horse has been sold and come back. Quite a description for such a young horse and lets face it, how many 5 year olds with quality would realistically be that perfect for under 4k. View with eyes wide open and a good sense of smell, cos I smells a rotten rat !

Have to say I seen that ad on HQ and my initial thoughts were:

1. Why is that horse cheap
2. I'm sure I have seen this for sale previously and not that long ago - stallion name did it
3. Something is afoot here

Personally I would be careful if you go to look - but I would never look at a horse where a dealer is pretending to be a private seller

Good luck

Stunning quality bay Irish sport horse gelding by Freddie's star out of a Bassomphire mare, one in a million

It does look like he has been advertised previously

I like him, but with that write up who wouldn't?
Just be cautious - nothing's perfect!

From the confo shot, he's quite high withered, wouldn't fancy fitting a saddle to him, plus he has a weaker back end (although he is young and unmuscled) and is v straight through the hocks.

As for the dealer posing as private seller thing, it doesn't look to me like she's being dishonest? I used to produce and sell maybe 3 a year around teaching but that doesn't mean I'd write 'I AM A DEALER' in big letters on an ad.

And regarding price, I don't think he's 'ridiculously cheap' at all! He's an average 5 year old who hasn't done much for 4k.

My pet hate is when the tilt the camera like that to make the horse look like its up hill, when its really just the camera! Tip the pic until the fence line is horizontal, looks totally different.

This is one of the first things I thought too! I HATE this!!

The other ridden pic is much better, he looks sweet and is nice looking. From the confo shot, I agree he is high withered and weak behind but as he is such a big young lad I would expect this to develop more. One thing I did notice is that he has quite upright pasterns, which is something to be aware of. His neck is really long as well.

What did the seller say when you spoke to her on the phone?

You can probably get a similar horse straight from Ireland for half that price, and without it going through a dealer yard and not sure what happens to it in the mean time. If you're after a ISH in particular then that's where I'd go. :)

It's cheap compared to what my friend has just paid for similar, also from a breaking dealer. I didn't think her horse was over priced.

Does this horse have a capped knee or is it just the photo?

Well she never got back to me anyway so I figure she's either sold it or figured out it know people she knows and it was dodge so she's thought best not to bother !

Back to drawing board !

I've seen a nice 4yo at irish sport horse agents for 6.5k. I think they are supposed to be quite good?

Will PM you :)

Ok forget that she just text me. I'm not too worried about the dealer / private thing. I've had 2 trust worthy sources say she's ok. Sounds like she buys a few to bring on each year, not really a full on dealer.

I'm gonna go and have a look if he sounds ok in our chat.

That jumping pic is bad I wouldnt have advertised with that but he obviously has scope ... hes not my type but a nice horse all the same looks like he has a lot of potential
I would have put him more around the 6k mark but If they need to sell then thats probably why

To all those saying he is expensive for a green horse ive payed double that for horses unbroken!

He looks nice enough. Havnt googled the seller as on my phone.

If you like him its worth a look :)

I do think he is expensive for what he is. I'm guessing your horses are well bred? I paid a lot more for my horse as a 4yo but he has good breeding and brought on by a very experienced professional, the advertised horse has neither.

breeding has been harlequin du carel, manhattan, contender lines. All been produced by me so no pro influence on the price.

Little bit snobby!:P Well, I don't think it's over priced from what I've seen

Breeding isnt everything personally I wouldnt let it influence my decision unless i wanted to breed from the horse in future.
Sadly neither is being produced by a professional !

Sorry haven't read all the post but how can a rising 5 year old broken quite recently be bombproof. If it is, it's either a complete donkey or doesn't have much of a brain. these are the sort of ads which encourage novices to go out and buy youngsters. Frankly, it puts me off completely and makes me question everything in the ad.
horse looks nice, the advert annoyes me, but thats just me. 'bombproof' is my pet hate of all words!! i dont think she is cheap, i paid half that for my well bred gelding as a 5year old.

I do like the horse though, she looks nice and uphill in that one picture. Jump picture is ok, but with water tray under, so you dont get an idea of how she jumps a 'normal' fence. Would she be as scopey over another type of fence?

sorry just realised 'she' is a 'he!'
