I am selling my diatshu foutrak as its costing alot to run and its old. Just wondering what everyones uses to tow with and does anyone have anything that is good in fuel??
Thanks

I have had four Isuzu Troopers, they were all brilliant. I currently have a Jeep Grand Cherokee. None of the really capable 4 x 4 tow vehicles will be good on fuel. I have a short journey to work, so I can accept that my car only does about 30mpg (if driven carefully). However it does have the grunt to drag a large horse and trailer.

Don't think it matters what you tow with nowadays, all 4 x 4's are getting expensive to run. I have a Land Rover Discovery 3 which is used as my every-day car too. Don't get me wrong its a great car, just begrudge filling it up! :)

I've got a Trooper, no matter how you slice it, it's expensive to run on a day to day basis. Currently, I think I spend about £160 a month on diesel, this includes day to day and longer trips. It's a lot of money. The tyres are nearly £400 for a full set.

But it tows like a dream, I have a heavy old Rice and a 16.1 TB who lives in a hilly area, the Trooper makes light work of all of it.

I would imagine that a Fourtrak is one of the more economical 4x4s. Yes, it has a more powerful engine than my TD5, but it's much lighter. I had an old model SWB Trooper and although it had a bigger engine that a Disco, it was better on fuel.

If you want an economical tow vehicle, do not buy a TD5! They use more fuel than the Disco 300 because because they heavier.

Shame you'r so far away, I might have taken that Fourtrak off your hands if you were a bit closer!

Kia Sorento
We absolutely love it !!
My dad wants to drive it everywhere !!
It's great that It's 200 pounds cheaper to tax than our old discovery
Does more to the galleon too
Can be switched from 4 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive saving fuel when not towing
Has also won tow car of the year a few times and doesn't feel as agricultural as say a land rover I'm only just 17 and have been driving it in the field (not insured on it for the roads) and it's so easy to drive

Also tows 2800kg which is ample for what I need

Agree, although I think the newer Santa Fe is a better option if you have the budget to purchase one.

I've got a 300TDI Discovery - costs £100 to fill up, but does 30mpg which I think is pretty damn good for a large 4x4 :)

Ironically I bought it because my Ford Focus estate didnt have enough towing weight..... and there is someone who comes to the yard for lessons who tows with a Ford Focus estate  I dont understand people who do that

We're getting a VW Tiguan, not the best off road capabilities - muddy fields are fine and supposed to be a good tow vehicle, but can't comment yet! We chose it as its one of the smaller 4x4's so good for everyday commuting as well as having the tow capacities! Thats the plan anyway but time will tell!

Yeah it was the best we could get for our budget
It's a 54 plate with 57,000 so we couldn't complain but my dad much prefers it to the discovery and my grandad has an 04 discovery and wishes he had the Kia!

Seriously I'd keep the Fourtrak. I have one that i have had for years, and it's the dogs b*ll*cks for towing, not overly expensive on fuel- it's 2.8Tdi. There are a lot worse out there!!

isuzu trooper and love it, does around 30mpg and tows the trailer lovely. so easy for it. got the citation model so few more creature comforts.

i love my tiguan - i get about 35 mpg in town and 50-ish on the motorway. on the downside my tyres are really expensive because ive got the r-line with 19" alloys :(

I had a vauxhall monteray ( badged Isuzu Trooper) for 10 years and the vehicle was fan dabby dozy, Pulled a trailer with two horses in easily. Got about 25mpg - 30mpg out of her.

Now I have a Landrover Discovery TD5. I love it and again on a good run I get about 30mpg. It is also used as my every day car and my fuel bill comes to about £60.00 per week. However it's my choice to drive such a big car but it doesn't make me smile to fill her up.

I've got a Ford Kuga all wheel drive. Towing capacity of 2200kg so fine for me as I only have a single trailer. Went for this as I have quite a long commute to work every day. It does nearly 40 mpg and is £165 tax per year. Pleased with it so far.

Whatever, don't buy a Vauxhall Frontera!!!!:(

Completely disagree - I had a 2.8l diesel SWB Frontera and it was fantastic at towing :) The mistake a lot of people make is to buy ones with the smaller petrol engines, which are not up to the job (well, i wouldnt expect any car with a smaller engine like that to tow effectively) - obviously not sure if that is what you had though
