What do you use/do to prevent mud fever?

I never ever wash off legs unless I'm getting horse ready to go out somewhere and need to clean him up. That said, I did have one horse who always got mud fever, but he also had a raft of random allergies too. I used Muddy Marvel (think it's made by Nettex) which was the only thing that worked. Clean up legs, dry them and plaster this all over. Great for clearing it up and stopping a recurrence.

Every single horse that had a white leg to get mud fever on got it last winter where I am. The worst (who still has it slightly after a year of the owners battling it) is the one who's legs are washed every single day. Personally, I leave feather on and don't touch them with anything bar a brush to brush dry mud off.

Battling mud fever for a year? Ouch poor horse. The owner isnt tackling it hard enough. There is no way it should take that long to clear up!

Thank you. What if the girth causes it too? It doesn't but just in case. She sweats an awful lot and she's so sensitive. I use a fleece lined girth currently.

I basically use the Gold Label mud guard on the bottom half of my horse (legs/all over his tummy and his chest and up in-between his hind legs!! The Mud Guard is brilliant stuff - it has tea tree oil in it and the mud just falls off when its dry. Its hard to explain but the hair feels like its got conditioner in it. Fantastic stuff!!

And I would use a girth sleeve and make sure you've got a clean one on at all times or use a Wintec Elastic girth. They have no seam on them and they don't rub at all even when you've been through serious mud. Great girths!!

It's much drier this year so MF is at bay. We are on clay and if you wanted to ride, you had to do something as all legs were caked. If I washed off I would dry or out wraps on. The big difference was to stop sticking on pig oil (not with sulphur - one of the horses had a bad reaction to it). It's cheap and it works. Mine had bad MF to start with and nothing helped. Kept him in till it was clear and then switched to the pug oil. Result. The mud mostly doesn't stick and what little is there will just brush off really easily, also great for helping keep tails mud free too
