I never ever wash off legs unless I'm getting horse ready to go out somewhere and need to clean him up. That said, I did have one horse who always got mud fever, but he also had a raft of random allergies too. I used Muddy Marvel (think it's made by Nettex) which was the only thing that worked. Clean up legs, dry them and plaster this all over. Great for clearing it up and stopping a recurrence.
