What dog should my friend get?

Our JRTs have all been great with kids. The more the merrier.

I still remember the nightmare of mixing primary school age children, Lego and a new puppy, though 😳🤣
I dread to think! My lot were (still occasionally are) terrors for stones. They never eat them, thank god, but it’s a high value ‘toy’ which gets paraded round. There’s forever a stone on the kitchen windowsill.

I wouldn’t say terriers are easy , how about a schnauzer ? My friend has a small one who is great with everyone people and dogs and she has been an easy dog , they just need a bit of care with their coats ..or a proper staffie, not the large crossbreed type, they aren’t my type of dog but I know some lovely staffies who blend in well with other dogs, people and children

mini poodle all day long! sweetest little bundle of fluff, learnt all his tricks in a month and he’s happy with a 3 hour long walk or a duvet day! only downside is that he’s insanely picky with his food, which i learnt is a typical poodle thing🤣

Yes, I used to know a lovely proper staffie, good with everybody.

I understate the amount I drink 🤣
:D
I had an EBT X and she was fabulous… but my goodness difficult to deter from a chosen plan of action.

When training she was very enthusiastic and in her eagerness to please would offer a variety of behaviours before settling on the right one, but we got there in the end :D

I could have taken her anywhere and she would have loved everyone and everything. She didn't just tolerate going to the vets, she loved it, and all the staff would make a fuss of her.

God, how I miss them all :(

The people next door, who are vile, have a beagle. That seems to survive them without becoming aggressive, which their JRT and Rottweiler did so were got rid of. The kids tow it up and down the terrace and it seems to just do it's own thing on the end of the lead.

I grew up being bitten by poodles so not keen on those and I wouldn't go in a house or let my kids (if I ever had any) which had any kind of bull or bull breed cross in.

Terriers are a very mixed bunch. MIL had a lovely Border who did well with SIL 2 kids but my sister has a hunt bred parsons type who has bitten and I have one who loves everyone and everything and adores children, but he is on a lead with me hovering nervously over him.

A Cavalier or Goldie would be my choice I think, although if you could get one of the ubiquitous sandy coloured mongrels that used to be prolific, I imagine that they would have a great time.

There's a very good breeder of JRTs in the South - dogs are good with kids, dogs, cats, parrots...the lot!

Are they by any chance from Dublin? My friend has a JRT from apparently highly reputed breeders in Dublin and she's honestly the only one of the breed I've met I'd let anywhere near a child. She's an angel but for a terrier she's kind of thick. I love a terrier and I really love borders but they all seem really hard work and wilful.

So far the whippet and the schnauzer are winning. I've sent her off with the findings of this thread and told her to research the worst of each breed and honestly think if she could cope.

I still think she should get a bichon but she seems to have a set against white small curly haired dogs. She has also ruled out a poodle because she said she wouldn't cope with people asking if it was a doodle/what it was crossed with 😂

I always assume people overstate the amount they walk. Mine are pretty fit and most days only get an hours walk, although if there’s no training and they are just ‘walks’ I’ll pay for it later.

I feel this on a deep level. If I walked Fodhla for 8 hours she'd come home and be like 'what's next' and probably eat the house. One hour with some training interspersed will have her snoozing by the time I've taken her collar off.

Some days she does get 2 hours but one hour of it is non conventional, she goes to the gym with Mr AP so a lot of it is standing around waiting for commands. Both of them are in peak condition because he feels bad skipping it because she loves it so much 😂

Yes, she's in Dublin - I deal with her terriers on a regular basis and they've got fabulous tempraments.

Whippets are not, I admit, my cup of tea. They are not going to want to interact with a child, they always look miserable and apart from looking beautiful lying on a sofa don’t seem to bring a great deal to the party.
Oops!

They're very stylish but I don't really know any. I get the impression they're almost a cat like dog but I don't know if that's fair 😂

I've always wanted a lab or goldie myself but I think she's concerned about the size against her child. I get that, my dog is 20kg and she could easily knock over a small child if she was allowed.

I've always liked the look of a Bedlington too but I don't know any. Sigh, wish it was me puppy shopping 😂

Not sure that I've ever heard anyone dare to post on AAD that they are less than enthralled with whippets before. Brave move....🤣

Is your tin hat to hand?

Kind of reminds me of how I've often been tempted to post a thread asking people what breed under no circumstances would they get, just to balance out the threads we have on dream breeds, but I've never been brave enough 😂

I have said it before, but it was years ago and the bruises have faded.
Someone always says ‘whippet’ to any breed recommendation. Tbf someone always says labs too, so I try not to!
If you posted on here and said ‘ I need a guard dog for my scrap yard and to do mountain rescue at the weekend’ someone would say whippet 🤣

Actually for me it wouldn’t be whippet, if I wanted a cat I’d get one 😁

Fabulous dogs, I agree. Terriers can be terribly hit or miss. You won’t go far wrong with a nicely bred show Cocker. Bichon’s are fantastic (I’m obviously biased though 🤣).

I’m not sure I’d go whippet or terrier with a 5yo in the house, there Will be plenty of examples of easy family dogs but also plenty that aren’t. Schnauzer have the tendency to be really quite yapping/barky

I know lab/retriever is very cliche but it’s cliche for a reason.

Also I’ve met plenty of Staffies who are superb family dogs.

In the past I have thought I would not like certain breeds, but, we have a big fun dog show and the breeds I thought I wouldn't like due to rumors of their traits I love. It do not dislike big dogs but they just aren't practical in our house. We have always had terriers for that reason. Terriers of scottish origin have been my breeds. Same with horses - Clydes.

My aunt and uncle used to breed Scotties, they were lovely dogs, lots of character and absolutely fine with us when we were children.
