What else works when a horse 'plants' itself?

When I read the description of your horse it is a mirror image of the problems I have with mine, also bought to BSJA. Someone earlier recommended professional help and I have to say thats what I thought but from my experience change professional to sympathetic, it doesn't help to have professionals tell you ' its a backward thinker, cut your losses and get rid or another favourite is you don't want this one buy one of mine'. My feeling is that my boy lacks confidence and I have completely changed his ridden work to include lots of fun things and he has become far better. He
was in a professional yard and became jumping fatigued, and they were really hard on him when he was ' naughty' but anyone who knows anything about cruising / animo offsping knows you will never win by bullying them, they fight back harder. Good luck

Get someone behind you with a good lunge whip, dont take any messing.

I agree with this option.. if she takes it badly, do it again untill she does as she's told..
She's taking the p!ss!!

Yes the bottom line is when she plants her self, she knows your scared, and she is then taking control and becoming dominent, try and find a good jockey, eg national hunt sort who will come and sort her out for you, i am not a cruel person by any shape or form, but horses do need to realise who the boss is. You could also try long reining her as you will probably find she plants herself then too, then really drive her on, repeat this every day until it becomes second nature for her to behave, only then ride her again.

stubborn moo!!

my mare has done this before when napping on a hack, however its normally ends with a rear or going back wards at speed. On the roads = not good. she is quite stroppy / sensitive, i am a confident rider but she frightened me with her messing around once as i thought we were going to get hit by a car - kicking her no effect, whip her really frightens her and gets her in a tizz, but as stupid as it sounds what did work was really shouting at her. and i mean REALLY shouting (army officer style) she was told in no uncertain terms to chuffing well stop p'ing me around accompanied with a pony club kick and that seemed to snap her out of it. if you exude confidence and a no messing attitude it will rub off on them that you are the boss. peoples lunge whip ideas are good depending on her reaction - sounds like she needs a shavings fork up her arse to me!! the problem with mares is they can be so stubborn - like the saying goes "ask a mare, tell a gelding". at the end of the day she is taking the pee - which is all very easy for us to say but if she starts to get dangerous with it you are limited to ways to solve it.

do you use spurs? these may help or may make it worse depending on your mare.

you need to be one step ahead and not allow her to stop in the first place. always keep your legs round and if you feel her slowing really wrap your legs around her and in the words of lucinda green "squeeze like she is a toothpaste tube"

if she always stops in that area what about blocking it off with cones or something? might break the pattern at least temporarily. or for a while dont work her in that area of the school?

lots of groundwork/lunging etc may help build a closer bond too which may help

Good luck whatever you end up trying
