Okay, grim subject and I don't want to discuss why I need to know please as it could cause distress. :(

But, if a horse is sold and subsequently sent for slaughter, what happens to the passport? Do the passport agency have to be informed, or is the passport just thrown away, and no record kept?

Or would the slaughterhouse have to keep the passport for their own records? Would it be possible to find out if a particularly horse passed through their hands?

I believe there are only a handful of places horses can be sent for slaughter, am I right?

I politely ask anyone answering please not to speculate as to why I'm asking and to please be sensitive in your replies. Thankyou. :)

the passport should be returned to the PIO, you can tell them if you want it back to keep after its voided though.

So the PIO should have on record which horses are no more.

I dont know what records the slaughter houses keep ,but no, they wouldnt hold on to passports as they should be returned

The passport should go with the horse to the abbotoir and should also be returned to the PIO although I am not sure that they will actually do that. The abbatoir should have a record of the horses that go through but the accuracy will depend on the horse going with its original passport and that its not had another issued to hide its origin.

Thats what it says in passports, whether everyone does is a different matter, but what a private owner might do (ie keep it for sentimental reasons) is different from a business that should have all its paperwork above board.

I have just had a quick look and it states that they should be returned on the death of the horse, I thought it was on all of them but I cannot find it on one of mine.
I dont think it is a law as such and cannot see it being followed up, this is part of the problem with passports, they could be recycled if someone is that way inclined.

Just to add they are only supposed to have one passport, I have a pony with two breed society ones, he also has 2 unique life numbers:confused:

When I lost my foal I was sent mine back to the breed society to be stamped and then requested I had it back, which they did.

....but does this procedure actually work? I have known horses to go and owners have kept the passport or so I've been informed

I don't know from personal experience

we returned our passport and it was sent back to us stamped "deceased" :(

at least this means anyone who wants to keep them for memories can do so. not sure if all societies follow the same procedure though.

ETA: that was for a pony who was PTS at the vets, not one that was sent to slaughter so perhaps my answer isn't much help....
