We have two labs, and are thinking about insuring them after hearing lots of horror stories about them! I've never insured a dog or cat im my life before, and considering we've only ever had a cat run over that led to £600 of surgery, thats not bad over twenty years!

One lab has just come from a rescue, and they reccommend petplan, but the total for basic cover for both labs is £30 a month - which is more than the building insurance on our mortgage! I've just looked up how much it would be on KBIS, who insure our horses, and its nearly £28 with them too. I'm now wondering whether to keep a couple of thousand in an account, and just pay £30 a month into it ourselves. We used to do that with the ponies. I guess we need third party insurance anyway, but can't see any options for just third party liike you can do with horses.

What does everyone else do? As you can probably tell, I'm not a fan of insurance companies! I think everything is loaded in their favour!

I have mine with NFU (who have been v good at paying out a small fortune for my horse's vet bills) However, my dog is a little mongrel. :p

When I had a GSD I never insured her as the premiums quoted were huge, and I suspect you will have the same problem wherever you go with two labs. I do think you'd be better off putting money in the bank for vet bills, but I would still get some third party insurance in case your dogs cause a traffic accident/bite someone etc. You can probably get the 3rd party cover with your house insurance. :)

Have you tried Direct Line? They seem to have a flat rate for the first few years, £9 for basic cover and £13 for advanced. That's not to say that it won't skyrocket after that. :o

Both of mine are through Directline - £26 per month. They were very quick to pay out in april (£1,300) have just presented them with an invoice for a further £2,363.00 for the same claim so let's see if it's honoured :o

Never insured my last dogs (to my cost), so would highly recommend it now.

Petplan cover for life, £300 a year for a GSD pup (inc. one month free).

I considered paying it into a bank account instead also, but decided against it, as whilst I could cover a one of surgery or similar, if he were to develop a lifelong illness I can't guarantee I'll be in the same position financially in say, 5-10 years.

I too took on my lovely dog from the Dog's Trust earlier this year and have continued with Petplan but it is expensive - without looking I think it's £16 a month. PDSA has been recommended to me by others for being good payers and a lot cheaper

just taken insurance out now for my springador tonight, gone with tesco at 9.19 a month... best deal ive found ever!

I have 4 covered with NFU - £38p/m for all so just under a tenner each. Had my old boxer with them too and have to say in the event of a claim they have been spot on and v quick. They do cover for working dogs or pet dogs and you can for a little extra have cover for same injury rather than it being excluded in future.

Axa underwrite PP ,so cut out the middle man and save money.

I insured both of mine with Asda pet insurance...
Both are Large Crossbreeds and for the pair of them I'm paying just under £20 a month...

My greyhounds are insured with NFU, not had to claim in the last 3yrs but the premiums haven't gone up much, some of the cheaper ones offer a joining incentive so on renewal its much higher. I'd prefer a higher vet fees lifetime cover than we've got but i just couldn't afford axa or petplan. I don't really mind paying the premiums as i'm more likely to need to claim for the dogs than with the house insurance. You can get just 3rd party liability for £20 with Dogs Trust

Our two small dogs are insured with Protect your Bubble. It costs about £14 for both of them. The younger dog has slightly better cover than the older one

I insure my dog with Petplan. My last dog came from Dogs Trust with Petplan cover which we continued. Being a lurcher she was constantly at the vet in the early days being sewn up after going off after hares etc, and when she got a tumour on her face 4 years ago they paid up for £4000 claims with no questions or problems. We then spent another £1000 this year when she became ill and was eventually put to sleep. So the new dog is insured with them as well. Cheap cover is OK providing you can guarantee that the company will pay out in the event of a claim. As far as I know Petplan will insure them when they are older, whereas with several companies cover stops - and that's the time when you most need an insurance policy, so check out the upper age limit before you change policies.

I insure with Animal Friends and I pay £32 a month for 6k cover for my Bullmastiff and £26 for 4k cover for my bulldog. So far touch wood I haven't needed a claim. I like the fact some of their profits go to animal charities and they don't have an annual ceiling on a claim.

Both my BC's are with Tesco. One is £17 per month and the other £15 and thats the highest level of cover. They have both had a claim and they were sorted quickly and completely hassle free. They were really helpful on the phone when I had to contact them for claim forms.
