Hi,
my horse lives out, got him in the other day and he has flaky skin around his cannon bone area, and the hair just falls out if you touch it around this part. Brought mud fever stuff as assuming it is that, but it is not lower down where mud fever would typically be. Any suggestions? x

Mud fever can spread up the legs quite high in some cases, my sisters TB was riddled with it last year up his cannon bones poor boy :(
Is your horse out in a muddy wet field? If he is and from the sounds of it I'd think it was mud fever. Does the hair come out with a patch of white-ish skin attached to it?

my mare sometimes gets this when her coat is changing, it goes greasy around the cannon bone and i just scrape it lightly with my nail and the old hair comes away and there is new hair underneath. doesn't sound like mud fever to me.

Lice are often confused with mud fever. As are mites. Mud fever is usually scabby rather than hair just coming off.

My old Arab gets this too. I find that using a Magic Brush in a circular motion on his legs gets rid of it (he objects to dandy brushes but the Magic brush isn't sharp so he doesn't mind it)

The field is generally quite dry, however by the gate and around where their haybales are is really deep with mud. The hair comes out with whitish flakes of skin x

Found one little scab but that is all, if it was those would he not be itchy and affected in other areas. Never had a horse with mud fever or mites/lice so not really knowledgeable about this x

My mare had this a few years ago during one very wet winter. It is basically a bit like rain scab. ;)

It needs to be out in the air, so pick all the hair off that will come off, wash and dry the skin using diluted hibiscrub (only the once though!) I got flamazine cream from the vet, but dont feel it did any more than another topical ointment would have done.

basically treat it as rain scab. I think Whisper got it as a result of the constant rain running off the binding of her rug down her cannons. It looked exactly as your picture does. ;)

Thanks, I did hibiscrub etc at the weekend and apply the mudguard stuff, however I will call the vet and ask about the cream :) x

putasocinit - I googled the systems for mites, he isn't itchy at all, so I'm not sure if it is mites x

Mine gets like that when his coat is changing, you can literally rub the hair off on the insides of his lower back legs. My old mare had it too. Doesn't cause him any issues and doesn't happen any other time.
