Mine are naked! My yearling is coating up nicely but my four year old still has quite a fine coat. If it begins to frost in the morning I may put her in a lightweight overnight. Both are living out 24/7 and are natives.

Connie is only out during the day, she's got no rug, but her yak coat is growing rapidly!!

Mickey the new lad, currently unclipped TB, living out 24/7 a lightweight if its going to rain, naked if dry during the day, at night if its going to be dry, just the light weight, if cold/wet/windy i'll chuck a (thin) MW on. When clipped I'll go for a blanket clip initially as plan for him to live out 24/7 all winter.

One naked and fluffy.
One with no fill rug and fleece underneath.
One with 100g rug.

I've only been rugging them as it's been wet, and they haven't got a huge amount of shelter in their current field.

Welsh D mare (unclipped but fine coat) is in her "rain anorak" i.e. summer-weight turnout rug. She does have a bit of arthitis in her back end so I'm aiming to keep her bum nice & dry.

Traddie-boy has sweet itch, so has his Rambo hoody on coz when it stops raining (LOL as if :)) the midges will be out in force' plus summer anorak on top just to keep his back dry. He was clipped back in the "summer", now growing it out, so hopefully won't be too hot under there.

Both are out in the field at the mo (tiddling down with rain as per usual). They come in at night. Mare doesn't wear a rug (yet) as her stable is always quite warm; traddie-boy will wear his premier equine fly rug in case any midges around.

Will probably clip in half term week - so then the rugging up proper begins in earnest!

MM was full clipped a week ago, she has a half neck rhino medium weight when out, and a light weight quilt with a medium weight on top in stable at night. If she's in during the day she wears just the light weight quilt.

She's a poor doer and its taken me 6 weeks since I moved to my current yard to get her looking right!

At the moment all of mine are unclipped & live out 24 hours.
Today they are all naked as it is beautifully sunny.
The pony grows a fab coat so won't be rugged unless the wether gets very cold/ bad
The older TB wears a MW when the temp drops below 10 & a HW when it drops nearer to 0. If it goes much lower he wears a HW with additional under rugs.
The young TB is a nightmare to keep weight on & seems happier to be kept warmer. When I got him he had a reputation as being a 'lunatic' in the field, constantly tearing around, only liking to be out a couple of hours before waiting to come in. I think he just didn't like being cold...now that he's kept with warmer rugs on & more fibre in his diet he's happily living out & totally settled in the field.
He wears a MW if the temp drops below 12 & will go to a HW if I clip him or if the temp drops to 5. Again if the temp goes much lower more under rugs are added.

Mines in a no-fill rainsheet at the moment as she had a bath on saturday (took advantage of actually seeing the sun!) & she needs clipping so trying to keep her clean for that.

Once she's clipped (will be chase or blanket probably) she will probably go into her MW but if its above freezing might swap for No-fill. She won't get HW on unless it goes down to -10 or we manage to full clip her and it drops down to freezing.

My ID Cob mare has a hunter clip and is wearing a 200g full neck turnout. She is mainly living out at the moment as loads of grass still but when I bring in over night to ride in the early morning she keeps the same rug on in stable.

When the temps drop down to zero or thereabouts I will put a medium quilted under rug on too and she will be coming in every night for around 12 hours.

Welsh A has nothing on (unclipped) and will stay the same through all weathers except if it snows/sleets then I might put a no fill on him.

Unclipped (but not fluffy) ISH is in a full neck MW, out in the day and in at night.

He isn't cold but is by no means overly warm either.

Once he gets clipped out in a couple of weeks he'll go into a HW full neck turnout, with a fleece or stable rug underneath as necessary.

Mine is out naked unless as others have said it is continuous rain and then he has a 100g filled rug on simply because his lightweight can't cope but I have just bought him a better l/w so he can have that on when it rains now. He has his fleece on in the stable over night but only because I was hoping to slow down his hair growth as I am desensitising him to the clippers with a plan to clip on my week off at the end of the month :)

Mine is out naked (not clipped) and has a fleece on at night in the stable. If persistent rain then he gets a LW on as he has very limited shelter in his field.

My cob is clipped and out in the day in a rainsheet. In at night with a fleece, heavier comfort zone fleece if a bit nippier at night. He gets so hot.

Fig/TB/wimp isn't clipped yet. He's out around 6.30am-3.30pm in a medium weight full neck + heavy weight full neck + field mask on. Stabled at night, he has his cotton magnet sheet + full neck medium weight + leg wraps and then I pop a no neck light weight quilt on top at about 9pm.

 have you thought about emigrating him to the maldives or similar tropical climate he may only need a lw then ;):p bless him.

2 have 100g turnouts on
2 have 0g rainsheets on.

All still have very fine coats and are only just starting to turn woolly on the neck. Hoping to get away with not clipping this year.
They are all in at night but in a barn with 1 complete side open to the elements (sheltered but open). Out through the day but there is no shelter in the fields so the rugs are mainly for the wind and rain when it howls across the fields. They'll all get neck pieces when it gets colder and wetter.
2 will probably stay in the rainsheet until temp drops below 5c then they'll have 100g turnout or if colder, 1 will get a 200g turnout, the other is a hardy Fjord but getting older.
The other 2 will gradually go up to 400g turnout especially if I need to clip them. Both will be in competition work but out through the day and in at night.

mine is fully clipped legs and face too, she lives out 24/7 and is currently wearing two rugs; a lightweight no neck turn out and mediumweight full neck turnout at night she has the medium on top of the light then during the day if its nice weather the medium come off and she just has the light one on - some days when its miserable and grotty the top one stays on and the bottom one comes off - this is working well atm

I just don't understand what people are going to put on if people already have their horses in hws and/or more than one rug!! Its not even lower than 2 on a night time yet here....

Buds is nude in the day and a v lw at night just to keep the real chill off as we are having morning fog atm, by 9 its lovely bright sunshine so gets it off, he isn't yet clipped though/

In all honestly (and i'm not being sarky I want to know) if your horses are in hw rugs in 10+ temps now just because they are clipped what are they going to wear when its snowing and doesn't get above freezing all day?
Surely there is only so many rugs a horse can where before it is frankly uncomfortable!

when i was working away last year our livery had three horses only one was clipped but she rugged them religiously from the end of august untill may - according to horse and hound we were the coldest village in the uk for a couple of weeks and her horses all had eight rugs on. i am not exagerating - i wish i was - it took close to 20mins just to rug her horses! the total number of rugs they had on was more than all the other horses total of rugs! they looked like michellen men! (sp?) in the same temperatures everything else was fully clipped, had an under rug on and a heavyweight or an under rug and two thinner rugs on and during the day the jad the under rugs off or just heavy turnouts on!

lucky you! was -4 here last night. the forst has only just lifted from the shady bits of the garden. i've just taken her HW off and kept the 100gm full neck on. she's not yet clipped but had hardly any winter coat - she did xc on sunday and was fine - not too sweaty.

mid winter when its down to -16 up here and not over -10 during the day (like 2 yrs ago) she had a duvet under rug (the weatherbeeta ones), a fleece and a HW to rug - plus a belly on the duvet. so not a huge amount more. that is when she is fully hunter clipped living out 24/7 365.

What she does however have then is total ad lib hay to keep warm. at the mo she still picks at the last of the grass and just gets about 4 wodges of hay a day (just under half a small bale in a 24hr period)

it gets to a point that extra rugs make no difference - i could pile another few rugs on her at that point but i dont need to - shes warm and the snow/ice stick on top of the rug - shes warm under - if i add more she isnt any warmer under - she just starts looking like michelim man!

CS is in a LW no neck with a HW full neck on top, plus snuggy hood.

he was a bit chilly willy in his magnet sheet and MW full neck last night so NMT will pop a fleece on top last thing (because she's nice like that :) ) oh and he has his leg wraps on too!

hasten to add that neither CS or Fig have a winter coat, mildly fluffy ears and armpits but nothing anywhere else.
