Arab living out 24/7 in medium weight (220g) with no neck, felt warm this morning in minus conditions with heavy frost. Heavy weight waiting in the wings for when it gets really cold.
Yearling tb x wb in hw weatherbeeta as living out this year. tb x is in 450G hw as fully clipped, stables at night. both have full neck stable rugs to out on underneath then really cold weather comes
My fully clipped (except for legs) Appaloosa, fully fit and hunting has got three rugs on tonight as we are expecting temperatures of -6 this evening! He is wearing a Weatherbeeta combo fleece, a Mark Todd Under-rug with neck and a HW Masta Combo stable rug.
Both have a bibclip and both are out in a medium combo. However today was minus 1 and when I got the big Belgian draft in from the field at about 11 this morning he was sweating under his rug. Bless him so he's getting a tracer clip next week that should hopefully cool him down a bit. However can't keep him naked and unclipped because wouldn't even be able to hack him for 30 min without dripping with sweat.
2 tb's in 300g turnouts, as both freshly hunter clipped for the 3rd time already. The 4y/o tb is out with her own winter woolies resembling a mountain pony and loving it!
SFx 11 yr old mare in a Rambo combo 100g, plus 200g liner and a full neck. She's got a blanket clip. She wears this out during the day and I leave her in it at the moment. I'm picking up another liner from the post office tomorrow and if needs be she'll have that on too, but she's fine for now.
I'm feeling a little mean, now! High chaser clipped cob is currently out in a rain sheet with a very thin jersey cooler on underneath. He has a 115g stable rug at night... he'll go up to a 40g turnout when it's delivered!
My Connie x has a blanket clip, turned out during the day and in at night, is in a 75g with neck. I thought he'd be cold this morning as it was -3C when I arrived at yard but he was just right. He's also a little fatter than I'd really like so it doesn't hurt him to be on the cooler side.
Crikey, loads of replies!! My NF is fully clipped (except legs) and in full work, competing most weekends. He is out 6am-6pm in a 400g (Heavyweight) turnout during the day, and will have a 100g liner underneath when he is re-clipped. He is in at night with 2 heavyweight stable rugs, one combo, one standard neck and is just about warm. He is a very cold horse though, and through most of the summer was in a 100g as he was shivering!!
Fully clipped warm blood has 420g combo turnout in the day and a heavyweight combo stable rug with 200g under rug on at night. Old unclipped IDxTB had a medium weight combo on in the day and at night I put a 100g liner underneath. Unclipped IDx who lives out 24/7 out in just a medium weight with no neck. I check them every morning and night to make sure they are not too hot or too cold but all fell about right at the moment.
My blanket clipped TB is in a 400 liner, 100g stable rug with neck and a 200g TO with neck during the day. The TO is swapped for a 350g when stabled at night, he is just warm enough
My nearly blanket clipped ISH is in a 200g liner with a 350g TO on top during the day. The TO is swapped for a 450g at night when stabled.
My Danish mare who is clipped right out....apart from legs has one of those duvet type under rugs at night with a light weight stable rug then a heavy weight stable rug on top and turned out has a fleece rug with a mark todd heavy weight turnout rug.
The old girl had a middle weight stable rug with a heavy weight fal turnout on top which she wears indoors and out, obviously they will have one less if it does warm up this week!
My mare is fully clipped apart from half a head and legs, she's in a medium weight and she's toasty warm. Haven't used my heavy weight for the last 3 years.
Such a minefield! What might be perfect for one, is completely wrong for another, and with such changeable weather I find its so hard to find a balance!
WB with chaser clipped was moved up to a 360g last week after he got clipped - is as cosey as pie! And that's with all these minus temperatures too. He comes in at night and is turned out during the day. If he drops any weight then I will stick his 100g liner on underneath but he's a hardy boy!
Our hunters are clipped (but it's growing out), we have the 2 big ones in Weatherbeeta Stable combos with a mediumweight over the top when stabled. If they go out, we leave the combo stable rugs on and put a mediumweight turnout over the top. I like doing this as unless we ride them, we never have to strip them down, we just straighten the rugs.
The cob has a heavyweight combo turnout which she lives in whether she's in or out.
The youngsters are fluffy and go out in their birthday suits!
