What rugs do you own for your horse?

I am a very proud first time horse OWNER (having been a loaner for about 12 years!) I am wondering what rugs i need for my boy without buying unnecessarily. He will be stabled during very wet or extreme freezing conditions. I currently have the following:

Amigo 600D Medium weight (200g and he is currently wearing it)
Amigo Cooler/fleece (although it seems to be rubbish at cooling/assiting to dry him)

I am looking to buy a heavy weight stable rug for when he's in maybe 300g. I'm wondering if i also need a heavy turnout too.

What rugs do you all have for your horses/need?
 
I think I have too many rugs :p
1 summer sheet,
1 stable rug,
2 fleeces,
2 lightweights,
1 medium weight turnout,
2 heavy weight turnouts,
2 full neck heavyweight turnouts.

Tont's a good-doer, and a cob, who lives out 24/7, so he really doesn't need that many :D

Now have and need are 2 very different things!
Captain has - 1 x- heavy t/o, 1 -heavy t/o, 3 medium t/o, 1 med/ lite t/o, 3 lite t/o. He has -2 x-heavy stable, 1 heavy stable, 2 medium stable, 3 lite stable.He also has 1 cooler,2 fleeces and 1 sheet. Captain needs 1 of each as he is not a rug ripper!

Fany has - 1 heavy t/o, 1 med t/o, 1 med stable, 1 fleece. Now before anyone thinks she is deprived in the last year she has killed 2 fleeces, 1 sheet, 1 t/o rug and she is a cold blood so only needs rugging when clipped.

Ha ha :) will definatly be no cold/wet/scruffy horses from you two! Ahh i'm sure i'll end up with bug, already seem to be gathering horse stuff rapidly (even more so after your horse live!!! lol)
 
Depends on your horses winter coat.
My horse's winter coat is none existant.
I have a
- light weight masta (170g),
- an under rug and
- a masta heavyweight full neck masta (425g)
for in the stable which I mix and match to meet light weight, medium weight, heavy weight and extra heavy weight (under rug under his heavy weight) in the very very coldest of nights) as he is an ultra light weight himself. I've tried him with less but he just stands there and freezes or ends up box walking all night in an attempt to keep warm.

I also have for turn out
- summer sheet (no filling)
- light weight masta
- full neck medium masta
no need for heavy weight so far as he spends the couple of hours turn out a day during winter running round like a lunatic :D

I just tend to go up to the next thickness when he is getting cold and no longer able to keep warm so he tells me when he's ready lol we are after all their slaves lol

Most used are no fill rainsheet and light stable rug. Mediumweight is good and if you're going to clip you may need a heavyweight for mid winter. Mine is clipped and rarely has the heavyweight on. For stable, I don't go above a mediumweight, but it all depends on your horse.

My "wimp" has lightweight, medium, and heavyweights in both T/O and stable.....then the stable ones with necks and under rugs.....oh and a fleece! Does she need all that? Probably not!

i have too many for taz :o but i have had him for 8 years and im a collector of rugs, i have more rugs but they are either too big or too small for either of them :o

My welsh cob only has a pretty red cotton rug with little horses round it for shows! Poor horse. Not that he needs one, he lived out in all that bad weather last winter and still looked great in spring.
Our old horse on the other hand has 3 turnout rugs, and is already wearing his lw.
 
well mine has 3 rugs, so nothing compared to other people haha!
he has 2 m/w turnouts (about 220g i think) and a fleece/cooler. i dont have a stable rug as i heard it was better to keep a warm but wet rug on so it dries quicker & its beeter than putting a cold rug on him.
he really doesnt need any rugs at all, but i put one on him to keep him dry & clean (he is grey after all!) & i'm lazy :P

he has 2 m/w turnouts in case one get crazily wet or in case he rips it, then i can get it repaired & he still has one to wear (he likes to rip his rugs. and other horses rugs...)

A Rambo Duo

A WB Tri-star

An Amigo 1200d LW

An Amigo 600d LW

An Amigo 1200d MW (the Amigos are spares really)

A neck cover for the Amigos

Two sweat rugs for rough use round the yard, one string vest type and one cotton waffle type.

For 'best', a gold stripe whitney wool day rug

A cotton jersey cooler in black bound white (also for 'best')

Three white string vests (cos I love them, also for best and bought when available as they can be hard to come by these days)

A wool exercise blanket

A stable rug (only for emergancies, mine live out all year)

However, my little sec B does not own a single rug!!
 
When you end up with a small herd, rugs have to stretch further so less per horse lol - just the essentials!

Per horse:
LW turnout
MW turnout
HW turnout with neck
Single duvet (human) for extra cold weather

They share a few fleeces, and as the horses have mounted up over the years the HW turnouts are sometimes a MW turnout with neck, with an old MW stable rug underneath. It does, and luckily a 5ft9 rug will fit everyone just about (biggest of them takes a 6ft rug and smallest a 5ft6) so then I can swap rugs around as needed.

Totally agree, most turn-out rugs are breathable these days so are suitable for use inside and out and I never liked taking off a warm rug in the morning and putting on a cold one. I keep my stable rug for the odd time that my horse needs box rest.
 
Tbh and I stand corrected if wrong but I dont like heavy weights, they rub my mares hips something terrible so the most I have is med weights and put fleeces/ other rugs under to suit also 3 coats are better than 1 as air is the best insulator and your horse will feel the benifit much more. I have

1 full lycra rug

I think thats it, but i'm buying more at Olympia :D btw thats just for 1 :)

I do lots of layering if needed

where he has two of something, one is generally no neck and the other is a combo.
I had no idea how he was going to cope with his first uk winter in 16 years - better to have and not need than need and not have ;)
 
I have plenty :o I try to have 1 for each horse and a spare, so that if one gets trashed (as will happend during the worst rain period of the year) I can put another on straight away. I have heaps of cotton sheets too so that I can wash them weekly.

I like a broad range of rugs for the ridiculous climatic variations we have here, I live in Melbourne, where it is true when they say we get all 4 seasons in a day!

So my list would be:

cotton sheets/neck rug or hood
Heavy synthetic combo
Heavy synthetic rug (for those with sensitive manes :p )
Unlined synthetic
Unlined canvas
Light unlined canvas
Wool under rug (to make a medium weight under the unlined synthetic)

Plus show day cottons/woolens/hoods. I love rugs :o
 
I have 5 rugs my 20 native. She is unclipped teddy bear fluffy. At the moment I have :
No fill breathable lightweight t/o
No fill lightweight lined with fleece t/o
200 fill full neck t/o
250 fill full neck t/o
Fleece cooler
 
To save you having to buy more than one rug, why don't you get one that you can buy liners for? Rambo make two like this (Duo and Optimo) and Premier Equine have one that you can get a really good deal on at the moment. I think it is called the Buster Trio 2011.
 
lol this is just what I need to control my need to buy rugs! because I really don't need any new:

4 x fleeces
1 x summer sheet
2 x cooler rugs
2 x l/w stable rugs
2 x h/w stable rugs

2 x l/w turnout rugs
1 x m/w turnout rug
1 x h/w turnout
1 x h/w turnout with neck

and my horse isn't clipped so no excuse for rugging up!! (I will probably find more under the stairs or in the garage still in their bags and unused :o its an addiction!!!)
 
I have a shire tb x who is in at night, out during the day and he will soon be having a chaser clip, but at the moment he is rugless day and night (down south!)

The rugs are have are:
Amigo 1200D no fill with neck
Rambo no fill with neck and 100g and 200g liners depending on the weather
Cotton waffle sheet for travelling
Fleece/mesh cooler
Fleece for chilly evenings
Fairly thick thermatex

Appart from the fleece/thermatex I don't use stable rugs, I just leave his turnouts on (I do obviously check he's not wet/sweaty underneath etc.) in the stable, if they're wet his body heat dries them in no time. The fleece/thermatex are there if he is ever wet underneath.

I never use the rambo without one of the liners, that way I can wash the liners in the washing machine and the inside of the rug stays clean and then I can just give the outside a brush and sponge at the end of the winter.

I have seriously considered selling some but know that if I do I will need it so just keep them. Some I haven't even used from the last time I had them cleaned / reproofed from 2 years ago and they are still in their plastic bags :rolleyes:

(never needed a heavy weight t/o as hardly goes out in winter due to his mud fever and i just stick however many rugs under middle weight as needed in the snow!)

1 cotton sheet thing
2 fleeces
1 mesh sweat rug
1 lightweight stable rug
1 medium weight stable rug with detachable neck
1 heavyweight stable rug
A duvet! :D
1 lycra hood for those nights before shows/hunting where he WILL STAY CLEAN!

One problem with this is if your horse is a rug destroyer, as once the top layer if broken, there wouldn't be anything to fall back on, but is a good suggestion and quite cost effective :)
 
I am unusual in the fact I have NO neck rugs for Pickle.

have

1x Premier Equine Heavyweight
1 x Bucus Middleweight
1 x Amigo Lightweight
2 x older Fal-Pro's which are now more mediumweight. One needs repairing.
1 x Premier Equine Fly Rug

then indoor rugs

1 x Thermatex
1 x Mark Todd Heavyweight
1 x Lightweight Sheet
1 x Heavyweight newmarket wool rug
 
I have (for just one horse):

Lightweight turnout
2 LW-MW turnouts
Middleweight turnout
Middleweight turnout with neck
2 Heavyweight turnouts

3 fleeces/coolers
Middleweight stable rug
'Insulator' stable/under rug
MW-HW stable rug with a neck

She has too many rugs, but we have 2 of most things so one can be drying/washed and the other on :) Still need to get more neck rugs though :D
 
I think it depends on the horse!
My little old tb had more rugs then I do fingers and toes!!
Were as my little cob had 1 fleece 1 fly rug and a full neck turn out with no fill so you just have to see how you gland your horse go I would say make sure you have a warm turn out if he or she is not a hardy type :) good luck and have lots of fun with your horse of your own :)
 
My TBx (very slim tb) has:
1 rainsheet no fill, weatherbeeta
1 rainsheet no fill which isn't actually waterproof! :p second hand
1 lightweight turnout with fuzzy fleece lining
1 lightweight turnout with 50g fill, which again isn't very waterproof so hardly use it, 2nd hand,
1 medium weight turnout with detachable neck, 1200 denier with 250g fill, rainbow equine, he's in this at night atm
1 mediumweight standard neck turnout which isn't very waterproof so abit redundant!
Then he has
2 fleece/cooler type rugs which i use as under rugs too
1 lightweight stable standard neck 50g bucas
1 mediumweight stable, second hand
1 heavyweight stable, rhinegold

so thats a total of 11, oops :o
