hi, my mare who does feel the cold a little bit is in a meadium with a neck and half neck heavy weight. fully clipped with a little grown back with temp of -7 . do u think she will be ok x

My boy is still in his middleweight combo turnout. Was fully clipped in november but if it gets to temps like last year I will switch to his heavyweight. As at the mo he is not cold

It's meant to go down to -4 here tonight and my TB (was trace clipped a couple of months ago so it's growing out a bit) is out in his field with a fleece, med weight stable rug and heavy weight turnout. All with full necks. He's warm and happy but it's supposed to drop to -7 tomorrow night so will be digging out another layer!!

My 11 year old hunter type, chaser clipped will come in from having a lighweight shell of a rug with thin fleece on, to a mediumweight stable rug with nothing underneath. She is more than ok temperature wise!!

Depends on the horse - we are in Cairngorms, and my haflinger who is never rugged is happy out in -10 or more nudey! My elderly IDxTB would have a HW rug on tho. Also depends a lot on what food they have available - they get apparently 80% of warmth from eating, so need a lot more rugging if pickings are scarcer.

Not sure any horse really needs more than 2 rugs, tho maybe as 3 thin layers it would be ok...

Dry still cold is a lot less cold than wet and windy cold too, dry still weather cold temps need a lot less rugging. Also its contrast with previous day/s temp.

Between 300g and 400g depending on their wimpyness. :p No neck covers though.

ETA. NBF, your boy should be fine in that. :) Also what make of rug is he wearing?

I'm a bad mummy, one baby cob naked, one fluffy tb naked and fairy normal unclipped tb in a medium weight, both tbs live out buut have a snuggly shelter they like sharing

Both in, one with grown out hunter clip who has a 200g with neck, other with chaser clip and runs a little cooler in a 350g with neck. Both feel warm, certainly not 'hot and cosy'! I wouldn't want them warmer. They have thicker rugs than they were turned out with as they aren't able to wonder about in their stables. They have plenty of hay so won't be getting cold!

1 naked as the day he was born, one fully clipped in a fleece and 250g and one fully clipped in just 250g, all live out 24/7, the warmest one tonight? Yep the naked one...........the coldest one, yep the fleece & 250g one......

Its getting to -2 here and my TB (with outgrowing trace clip) has his waffle cooler and his 115g stable rug on with full neck & his stable boots on. Doesnt sound alot but he is very hot blooded and overheats if I put anything heavier on !! I was worrying mind ... boyfriend has assured me he will be fine. He was quite toasty when I left at 6pm :)

SS x

Highlands are naked but just the usual Persian on the cob... This one, to be exact. I hope it's heavy enough for this cold snap...

Mine full clipped again 2 weeks ago was in his MW turnout last night and was cold this morning, he had also dug up his bed which is another sign he was cold.

It's mean to be -4 here tonight so have stuck on his under run which was 200 when bought but about 6 years old so i'd say its 100/150 now he was warm but it's a long night so so I'm sure he'll appreciate it

Fully clipped Arab has underrug and then heavy turnout over the top, and big lad who isn't clipped has a 100g under rug (just added that tonight) and his full neck turnout over the top. It's bitter up on the hill and being in they can't move around to keep warm, and the wind up there is freezing! They only get under rugs when is zero or below tho!

Frank - hunter clip (and porky!) in a 300g rug with 100g neck
Minnie- chaser clip )skinny ish) 100g outer with 200g liner - I find the layers work well (Premier Equine system)
Had small lord fauntleroy (Toby) still been here, he would have worn his natural overcoat!!

They are stabled btw.

he's an expensive bugger, that's for sure. Terrible for rolling in the mud and demanding new ones

New ones! Just because he got it muddy! Cheeky cobby.

Get one of these and beat the (dry) mud off it. ;) If possible get him to wear it when you do this, as you don't want to get a bad back stooping to hit in on the ground. :p

He would be appalled at the very suggestion

Trouble is, being a Persian Prince (you've heard of the Royal Cobs of Persia, I'm sure?) he will just set one of his assassins on me if I don't maintain his standards...

He might let me beat the mud off if I put it on the highlands to do it though... That's a thought...
