What shampoo do you use? Fairy liquid on horses?

I am very extravagant it seems! - Cowboy magic yellow out white in - fab stuff but not cheap!! might try one of these on here

i had a pure white welsh pony whho had the most sensitive skin, she lived in snuggy hoods fly rugs as they attacked her and she suffered badly from sweet itch.....hibi scrub and all those soaps etc did absoloutly nothing to help her skin or clean her coat and other shampoos left her all yellow:') we tried fairy liquid and used it for years as the fly bites were dissapearing and her coat was softer and whiter than ever!! so even a sensitive skinned horse doesnt react to it....i wouldnt worry :)

I've used fairy for over 20 years on all my horses and none have reacted to it at all. I've also tried various horse shampoos but nothing I've tried gets them cleaner than fairy!

Used Fairy for 20 or so years with never a problem, here in NZ we have Sunlight Dishwashing liquid - I have large quantities of white legs to wash.

Washing up liquid gets them really clean.

Another Fairy user. It gets them really clean, and a day or so after a bath, really shiny too. Been using it for 20+ years and never had a horse react to it. Their skin is a lot thicker and less sensitive than ours.
Also use Asda Lavender baby shampoo - the lavender keeps flies away, but I hate the smell of lavender, so he doesn't get cuddled as much after a bath!

I use horse shampoo/stain removers but you can't beat Tresemme conditioner on a newly washed tail, rinse, comb and it's silky smooth and not too flyaway !

Fairy on white bits (and white ponies!), and Asda Little Angels blue baby bath, which is moisturising and has baby oil in it, for dark coats, on recommendation from a showing friend (it gives a lovely sheen).

I'd use baby shampoo. The only reason I don't use fairy would be that I was berated for using it on my car as it could do damage... by that theory it's got to have something that wouldn't be too great for a horse in it

Not the best logic I know, but S'burys/Asda/Macro etc do huge cheap bottles and again if it's good for babies it's got to be nice and mild.

Have used fairy liquid for years on a number of horses and never had a problem...I always patch test the first time round just incase. At the end of the day you never know when you'll get a random reaction. But other than that, i use it everywhere except the face!
My sensitive thorughbred has had a terrible reaction. Bald patches. She's healthy, fit, incredibly glossy. I stupidly washed her withers in it and now she's losing patches of hair everywhere the washing up liquid touched.

Floof’s coat is very dense and greasy. I’ve found over the years Fairy is the best at getting the grease out when rinsing. Other shampoos, no matter how much you rinse leaves a crusty layer on him that you have to brush off then hot towel to a shine - lots of work! Other boyo has a much finer, non greasy coat and I use supermarket Tea Tree shampoo & Conditioner on him which works really well.

I used fairy on some stubborn sock stains before a show and though his socks were bright white he did get some irritation so I won’t again. I’d patch test on the pink skin if yours has any before going all over

Blue fairy, perfect for stains.....my dad also washes in it to get the oil and grease off him after a long day fiximg trucks.

I do have other shampoo to use, normally inbetween the fairy washes but the first of the summer is the fairy

I like the cheap purple shampoo for white bits. Obviously John Frieda is always preferable.....but frankly the budget doesn't always stretch to that. Unless it's on offer.

I have the whitest grey you can imagine .
I use John Frieda on his tail for special occasions when I want him very white .
For getting him clean after time off l will wash in something like Wahl dirty beastie or the oat one to get the worse off and then rub in lots of tomato sauce into the tail knees and hocks plus any other bad parts and leave on for twenty minutes .
I also use liquid Ariel in the ends of the tail when then they have gone brown .
I also always have baby shampoo for when he’s being washed a lot ( like when he was competing ) .
I like the dermolene soothing anti itch and their medicated shampoo which I use after hunting .
I always condition the tail usually with tresemme .
I finish with cowboy magic on the tail and baby oil on the body or my recent favourite beautify oil which great on tails and bodies but somewhat expensive so that’s a special occasion thing .

I do follow the never let Shy get filthy system .
Sky also supports a larger than usual colony of Non resistant MRSA so we need to keep an eye that that .

why is that a problem? I've never understood why it's a problem to resurrect threads - if people want to have the same conversation again thirteen years down the line, what's wrong with that

No problem to me. I thought perhaps people hadn't realised when they posted this morning that the thread was from 13 years ago, or maybe you did.

I worked on a yard where the horses were bathed weekly in Fairy and they all had amazing coats. None ever reacted.

I use big bottles of cheap horse shampoo mostly. Currently a Gold Label tea tree one.
I do have a few blue shampoo types for greys but I find they really dry my hands out so only really use it on tails now and then

Switching the question, has anyone used horse shampoo on themselves?!
Some of the Naff ones, I think it’s Pimp my pony smells amazing! 😍 I’ve been tempted to try it myself 😂

I used Johnson's baby shampoo on the tail of my favourite grey Connie. I never used washing up liquid but when I was at boarding school, a girl in my class who had lovely blond hair ran out of shampoo and used lux washing soap flakes instead. Her hair looked awful afterwards - ragged straw - and her father was furious.

Pantene 3in1 shampoos, conditions and shines in 1 go. Buy a large bottle from Poundland or similar when on offer.

Very tempted to try one of the horse shampoo bars though to reduce plastic. Anyone used one?

I very rarely wash my horse these days (hose her off occasionally, not wash with soap), current one is a very sensible colour, (bay, no white socks) and I only hack on her. Last time I washed her tail I used some Vosene I'd found in Poundland, that was a blast from the past!
