15hh mare, 16hh stallion - both round build with big shoulders (but not cobs)

What do most people get as a starting size - 3'6"? 4'??? and adjust as necessary?

Online shopping is calling to me......

3ft is still too big for mine :P Shes wearing a 30" dog rug, has taken after Mummy and feels the cold. Mine is from a 13.1h mare and 14.2 stallion, so I would think 3ft6 ish for yours?

I bought a 4'3 for our foal, she's only worn it once but I thought it was a good idea in case it turned cold!
I got a size bigger than what she was at the time as I figured it would be better than her outgrowing it within a few weeks!!
Just to give you an idea, the mare is 15.2hh with a broad front end and the stallion was 16hh.

Who is your mare in foal to?

We're definitely taking our chestnut mare to Ricco in a week or so, so if I see any pregnant ginger mares in a the fields close by I will wave at them!!

Good for you.

But quite often one is needed. Especially if they pop out when the weather is like this. As I'm sure you'll appreciate, foals can get cold very quickly. Even in a dry stable if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction. Let it get cold and wet and it will deteriate very quickly......

For the stable, how about getting your sowing machine out, and running up a little over the head rug out of an old blanket.

It doesn't need a surcingle as such - just a little tie under the tummy. As for outside rug - love the sound of the dog rug.

Got the indoor ones, I bought them for Ivy as a pressie years ago! Have a summer sheet type one, and a quilted, and have fleecy blanket to make one of those (eventually!)

Its more outdoor really, she *should* be born into nice summer weather in July, but we're near the NE Coast and its known for being very windy on our yard, so I'd rather have a rug and never need to use it to be on the safe side, than have a foal out when its too wet and cold. North Yorkshire fog is not pleasant and can last weeks!

We have 3' to 3'6" rugs on our foals at the moment. The oldest is 2 1/2 weeks old. All expected to mature in the 16.2hh ish range

Ooh maybe I got it wrong..... 4'6" is the biggest so I must have got it wrong!!!
Maybe it was a 3'3 I bought our foal.... will have to check when I get back home later!!

I went for a graded, registered Appy - the spotty in my sig. He's called Lambrigg Valentine, he stands over near Whitby. He's grown a bit since I last saw him - filled out really - he has BD points and is currently novice eventing - if you are at local events you may see hi out and about! Certainly eyecatching!!!!

I'd wave in the general direction past Great Ayton, as we're the other side to the way you'll come in - and hidden from the road - but hope all goes well for you. I think you made a good choice!

Ive got a 3' 6" rug, never used one on the last foal but had fab weather so not needed. I have stitched up the shoulders and also shortened the surcingles so that when he grows he can still wear the rug

Have to say if he didnt have it on today, they would have had to stay in, we are having the most terrible rain at the mo

at all these 2 week old foals in 3ft6 rugs!! Mine is 5 weeks old in a 30" dog rug.....to me the 3ft rugs I've got look HUGEEEEE!!! (like to plan ahead just incase...)

Matilda's is 3ft 9ins - altered a lot when little, but now (5 1/2 weeks) no shoulder pleats and only a tad more growing room at the back.

I have a 3'6 weatherbeeta rug which Pancake is in at the moment with no darts in the shoulders at 3 weeks of age, but knots in the surcingles and I bought a 4'3 for the next stage up (flint and pink I'll have you know
