What sort of dog WOULD you have?

How about a Welsh Springer - they're a bit less frenetic than most of the other spaniel breeds, and quite stocky, so still count as proper dogs!

I must admit I love Welsh Springers. I used to walk with a lady that had two and they were fabulous. Again though, like my desire for an Irish Water Spaniel, not an easy breed to get hold of these days for some reason.

Spaniel Aid have a Welshie pup in their care at the moment and he's pretty gorgeous :)

Time and space permitted - I would have a hoard of English Springers (show not working). I would also have a wire haired Visla - and I also want my little cross breed terriers to live forever

My partner is adamant that our next dog will be a Golden Retriever, having grown up with his parent’s golden, but I have always wanted a Cavalier King Charles.

Not sure what agreement we’ll reach - cavaliers are notorious for health issues, and the only goldens I’ve met have been selectively deaf, and with a tendency towards unpredictable aggression.

Anyone want to share their knowledge of the 2?

My mum has judged, shown and bred cavaliers for 40 years now so I’ve known a few ? Most definitely choose your breeder with care, make sure the parents are health TESTED (not just checked) for heart problems and MRI scanned for syringomyelia.

I’d recommend contacting the cavalier club puppy register if you were looking - but still always ask the question about health tests as not everyone does them!

They are gorgeous little dogs who will do as much or as little as you want - they can walk for miles and be proper little sporting dogs, or they can be soft little lapdogs ?

My mum’s dogs regularly live to 14-15 years old, so as long as you go with the right breeder you can get a fabulous little dog!

ETA - yikes that was scary looking at the website, all the past friends they are ‘remembering’ are the people I remember from the show world when I lived at home, so mostly my mum’s contemporaries! She is President of the club now, which I’m always so proud of ?

Strangely my Newfoundlands were the least smelly breed, the worst is the current labrador. They didnt slobber either which is why they didnt smell I guess.
Well bred Cavalier would be my small dog option again a breed we bred for a while but they can be a bit barky

Neither of the dogs we have are a breed I would have gone out looking for, we have a husky and a collie. (Bo is our 2nd collie). I love GSD’s, and will have another one some day. I do love these two to bits. I’d also love another Lab. We had one when I was growing up.

I second this, my welshies temperament definitely has undertones of basset hound.

You'll have to excuse the poor photo there's a thunderstorm going over and she's not a fan of loud bangs.

Hovawart, Beauceron, Curly Coated Retriever and ACD are probably at the top of my list.

I occasionally take a fancy to a Blackie, but that's mainly just because they remind me of my giants.

Border collie x whippet (I'm determined ?)
Smooth collie
English Bull Terrier
Border Collie (but a really specific look ?)
More whippets
Italian Greyhound

I could go on but they're top of the wish list.

this is my old border collie/whippet, had the bc temperament but looked very whippety, i have been looking for that cross ever since i lost her and have never found one

For those who have mentioned beagles, mine is a mix and more like a minihound, but shes the most delightful wonderful, intelligent loving dog. She lights up my world and drives me crazy in equal amounts, but this face just makes my heart sing

Edit to add, shes perfect with people, other dogs, she loves cats, I cant trust her not to chase things that run, but otherwise shes a fabulously easy dog for the most part, just everyone's friend. My dog training friends who know her borrow her as a stooge dog - she just reads situations so well and responds so appropriately
Those ears! Id have to give up work in order to fondle them 24/7

I'm really boring, but I've wanted a staffie - preferably a brindle - since I was about 8, lol!

though I seem to have formed an unexpectedly excellent relationship with my dad's carpathian shepherd.

I have a relative who took on a rescue staffy, she does have health problems, related to her early years but she has the most gorgeous temperament, is fabulous with other dogs, especially puppies and with people.

They're becoming very popular in flyball but I want to avoid a specifically sports bred one (and being followed by the breeder and feeling pressured as a result). I've not managed to find one outside of sports.

If cross breeds included, then a whippet x lab like my old bestest dog Ebby whom I miss very much. Lab mum, whippet dad. (accidental mating). She really was faultless. Even to the point I thought I'd get a lab bitch and a whippet dog to breed the cross. (There are so many unwanted / cross breeds, I know I would never, but the thought has been there.)

There is lots of dogs which I think are very beautiful, or interesting, but that does not mean that it would be a good idea for me to own one.

I've read that the howl from a single Basset Bleu de Gascogne can be heard for miles

Some Eurasier dogs looks like giant versions of Finnish Lapphunds, but the breed was created by crossing Wolfspitz with Chow Chow, and then add a bit of Samoyed

Danish-Swedish Farmdog. According to what I've read the Danish, and Swedish kennel clubs had to fight FCI to have the breed recognised, simply because FCI had never before accepted that a breed could have 2 countries listed as its origin. They wanted one country to give up its claim to the breed, but DKK and SKK refused, insisting the breed had developed in the 2 countries together, and eventually FCI agreed.
So basically I like the breed because I like hearing that sometimes Davids really can beat Goliaths in real life, which is no reason to actually want to own the breed. Although the 4 Danish-Swedish Farmdogs that I've met a handful of times out with their owner, is quite nice.

And I could mention many more, but as it is, I'm quite sure my next dog will be a new Finnish Lapphund. Although one day, I might get a Norwegian Buhund again, who knows.

Those Berger Picards look like they've got a really good sense of humour!
Easier to say which dogs I wouldn't have rather than those I would.
I wouldn't like to have a dog that drools such as the Dogue de Bordeaux, don't get me wrong, they're great dogs but I don't think I could live with one. Also ones which have droopy eyes like the Bassett hounds as I'm a bit queasy about eyes and I'd be permanently worrying about them.

I'd have a terrier with impeccable recall ? failing that, an Irish Wolfhound if the lifespan was better. Ooh or a wire haired dachshund.

Bizarrely and unexpectedly my terrier has excellent recall - not quite sure why or how that happened though I made a big effort right from day 1. I didn't actually expect it to work though...!!:D He is young yet though so plenty of time for things to change to a more 'normal' terrier service.

Well that's just adding to the list of "reasons to get an Irish Terrier" ??
