I have a fab 14.2hh irish bred mare (see photo below) that I am thinking of breeding from (using embryo transfer) next season. My daughter is wanting to event seriously as she gets older and we thought that this might be a way to try and breed something nice for her to event in the future.

The mare is an out and out schoolmistress at BE100 level, consistently jumping double clear inside the time and finishing on her dressage score, and will hopefully go on to do some novice level next year - but she is not a pony who should compete at that level every time out. She is a scopey sj having been placed at junior foxhunter and her dressage is improving all the time.

But ... she is not a big mover (especially in front so finds medium trot difficult!) and has a slightly long back. so would be looking to find a nice upstanding, short coupled big moving stallion to try to breed something for eventing - prefer predominantly thoroughbred in the breeding.

Any suggestions as to who to use - he would need to have proven track record jumping / eventing.

To lighten her up slightly and add the speed for the upper levels, then a TB or Trakehner would be the way to go.

Trifolio is a TB stallion with some very nice stock now out eventing. Mill Law is obviously a succesful sire of eventers.

Contis is a beautiful young Trakehner stallion, eventing himself with mixed results at the moment, but he is worth researching despite these results.

Obviously these suggestions might not be right for her depending on how she looks stood up.

Nice looking mare from the photo though

Mill Law seems to throw big stock, but I have heard can take a while to mature. We have a LOVELY colt by Denounce on the yard who has a fab temperament, and lovely movement.

Primitive Proposal would also be one to look at, aswell as Future Illusion, but being Fleetwater bloodlines he may throw slightly long horses!!

I am no expert when it comes to breeding, but our mare is by Hercorose, who is a KWPN CHAPs graded stallion. Our mare is very short coupled for a mare, and she gets her very floating, extravagant action from her sire. Her mum was a scatty full TB, and all she has taken from her is her pretty head. I dont think Hercorose has a proven eventing record, but, but I know our mare's half brother with Hercorose as the sire, and he is eventing at 2* level quite successfully.

Our mare has won and been placed consistently at BE100 and will be competing novice next year. She is regularily gets dressage scores in the 20s.

The stallion that I liked most at the Burghley Stallion parade was Marco du Fot - a Selle Francais eventing stallion. Possibly not the world's greatest record but he has been produced by an amateur and I have to say he made me absolutely go WOW in the flesh, plus I have seen one or two of his offspring that I thought looked fantastic. Lots of blood and a seriously flash mover.

The other stallion I would consider is Wish Upon a Star - he has really got it all going for him, great movement, great jump, great attitude. He's still young but he's one to watch. Makes me wish I had a nice mare to put in foal to him

Future Illusion of course

I used him for a couple of the same reasons you mention above, my mare is long backed, quite weak behind and quite upright so I wanted a short coupled stallion with a good back end. My mare doesn't have stunning paces for sure so nice movement wanted too. My mare is TBx and stands at 16.3, she is 16 and was maiden so didn't really know what to expect.

I am thrilled with my foal, she's gonna be huge though, used the same stallion on another TB mare and am thrilled with this foal too, she is smaller than the first but very elegant & moves lovely.

His semen quality is excellent, has been described as "rocket fuel" which may be of benefit doing embryo transfer.

Sadly not a millionaire but ... hopefully not as costly as trying to buy a young horse in 5/6 years time - IF we're lucky!!!

Thing is she's such a fab pony, but daughter really needs another season competing on her alongside her new PT/Novice schoolmaster and then the mare will still only be rising 13 so seems a shame to then give her best part of two years off for a foal when she could teach someone else's child so much! Hence thinking of ET - I am lucky though that a friend has offered me a fab broodmare as a host as she is not planning on breeding from her next year and she has been an ET host before.

I LOVE wish upon a star too, but he is quite a "chunky" boy, so would worry about how lwt the foaly would be! Would love to put my mainly TB mare to him though

Weston Justice is a very nice stallion, and I'd also add Contis and Singing Horatio to your list, both are Trakehners, very blood in type but will give you good movement too. And both being aimed at eventing careers. They are light elegant types

If you are happy to use stallions standing abroad, I also think for an upstanding stallion, who will add movement AND jump is Axis. British owned but stands in Germany. He was top jumper at his grading, as was his son Hirtentanz. I produced a filly by him last few years that was loose jumping champion and top scoring 3yo eventer at the 2008 Futurity. He'd give you that more size and power but keep the jump and blood. He is incidentaly competing at grand Prix dressage now.

Contis (this stud also stand advanced eventer Hanibal)- http://www.godingtonstud.com/contis.htm
