What stops you going hunting (again, with cost!)

If you sometimes ask someone else to do your horse for you....does that make you cruel?

Yeah - we took a 4 yo who'd never been hunting and my horse who hadn't been hunting since he was 4 and they both behaved impeccably, you'd think they went every week!

I think really both me and my sister were surprised at the lack of control or general riding ability so many of the people demonstrated!

I put 'other' as it's a combination of reasons. Mainly as I've not been before and neither has my lad. He's an ex-racer and while normally really laid back I suspect he'd find it all rather exciting and I'm too much of a wuss to take a chance on that! If I had the opportunity to go on an experienced, well mannered horse I'd be seriously tempted - but I've also heard some very alarming tales from friends about local hunts which is a little off putting!

We also have no transport atm which is a major factor, but hopefully this will be sorted at some point next year!

i have never been hunting, firstly i dont agree killing anything intentionally and second because i worry greatly about injury to the horse.

i would however be interested in drag hunting provided it was a safe enough route for the horse and going was good.

as said above the standard of riding at hunts is dispicable and laughable that they think they are good riders lol

The Cost for me. Way too expensive to go galloping through mud, pulling shoes off and getting soaked and cold!! The money would be better use putting towards a holiday or in my case a honeymoon!! If I had the money then I would go, both me and the horse enjoy it, although the company within the hunt is in a totally different league to me, so we don't really fit it anyway!!

Cost is an issue, but I probably would go out for the odd day if my horse didn't turn into a complete lunatic as soon as he hears hounds.

Hugely expensive:

£70 with the local fox hunts and £60 with the Bloodhounds.
If it were half that I'd get her fit and go once a month.

Went on holiday a few years ago - hunting with friends. Visitors cap was £110!!! (fox). I happened to be standing chatting to a 'local' when the Sec came round for the money, and assuming me to be local, I was charged £10.

Nice for me at the time, but that's totally taking the pee.

The only thing stopping me going is that my horse just isn't up to it anymore. He has ringbone in front and as the ground is so wet ATM they're spending a lot of time on the roads which isn't good for him. He came back lame the last couple of times so he's been retired from hunting

Much as I enjoy it, it isn't worth making my horse permenantly lame over, which is what would happen eventually. I refuse to bute him up to hunt, I'd rather he did a different job.

Before he went lame, there wasn't really anything that applied. It is expensive but I found a way to help with that - our hunt are v approachable and happy to discuss different "packages" so that you can get out a few times but don't have to subscribe. In terms of the jumping, I won't just huge hedges but again, having spoken to the Sec about this I know there's a way around most things so also not an issue. If I can find someone to lend me a horse, I will be hunting again asap!

The biggest thing for me is the cost, however this year (apart from the cost) it has been horse fitness. I am also a bit of a wuss jumping but I have always been told there are others the same and that there are always ways round, so I don't think that counts

Other - firstly, I have no horse. So I suppose secondly it would be the cost... I could use a hireling but I can't afford to. My third excuse is that I wouldn't know what to wear or how to act. Fourthly I don't jump... but then there is a pretty much non-jumping hunt very near to me anyway.
I will do it... one day!

Oh for Goodness sake!

This really annoys me, I detest generalisation. Talk about tarring everyone with the same brush, there are poor/thoughtless/inconsiderate riders everywhere you look.

I have a photo, poor quality as it was taken a long time ago, look carefully and see if you spot anyone very familiar. I absolutely dare you to say that she is a bad rider, then, or now

Example, I know a member on here that hunts, oh, what's she done? Oh yes, on different horses she is consistently placed showing, dressage, SJ, and is a member of the Hunt Relay Team ( 2 clears in appalling conditions at Builth this year) Dreadful rider - not! I'll bet that there are dozens of HHO members who are hunting AND producing/riding/competing succesfully and to a high standard.

I, on the other hand, can't ride one side of a horse in a dressage or SJ arena.

so I must fall into the despicable slot.

I LOVE hunting, haven't done as much as I would like too because of the price and transport.
I always use gateways

I'll be buggered if Im jumping a 6-7ft hedge off a road in to a boggy field

I love hunting, used to do it alot! However, I couldnt afford a subscription, and also the hunt I know well hunt on a Thurs and Monday, which unfortunatley I cant do cos I work full time!!

However, still go out with the Bloodhounds occasionally, and do aim to go out with the foxhounds again soon, probably on a saturday meet as it will be good education for my mare!

For me it's almost purely cost - I'm a second year university student who's just been made redundant from a part-time office job.

I have a suitable horse and used to hunt (as a Pony Club member it was £10 a pop) but I'm no longer a member and can't justify £60 more than once or twice a season.

In addition I don't have my own transport so I only ever hunted when it was within hacking distance, which might only be three or four meets a year.

At the moment, I'm not hunting because:

1) One mare is in foal
2) Other mare has just recovered from hep C and is wholly unfit!
3) I find it very hard to find out where the hunt is. Fortunatly I've found a friend who seems in the know, but considering they're a public activity akin to any show, why are there not more listings?
4) Uni

So I put other. I'd find the money if my horses were fit!! And if I could actually find out where the hell to go!

It has always been a desire of mine to go hunting - i truely wished i had done it with my super safe first horse. But i am afraid of jumping and the horse i have now would not cope - in that his head would explode and i would be pinged over his head!
shame!!!

Not got own transport so overall cost at present. It's a shame that a hunt meet held VERY local to where I am now but a couple of years ago is not there now !!

The country - I would definitely hunt more if I lived in good country but the fens leave quite a bit to be desired... And probably the horse too - he loves to hunt but I would be completely devastated if anything happened to him, particularly if he were to be injured because of someone else's recklessness.

I ticked 'my horse would not cope' as he tends to go a bit nuts around other horses

The cost and lack of transport are also factors, but I really really want to get out and do it one day.

I don't have my own transport when I'm at uni (glos) so I can only go when the yard owner very kindly takes me, which is usually every fortnight. I have transport when I'm at home but the hunting in suburbia just doesn't compare to the cotswolds. There's too much roadwork, too many people and it's all very slow which really winds the horses up when they're used to fast jumping days in glos.

I loved hunting but unfortunately I am no longer well enough to manage it. However I did struggle with cost to go as much as I would have liked at the time. In the end decided fun rides where much more value for money and done in my own time.

Hunting is just too long, and too much time hanging around freezing to death for my RA to cope with

i put other but cost is an issue as well, i have been before and i loved it but i dont have anyone to go with, the pack i went with werent that friendly so i wouldnt want to go on my own

tracey01 what a bad experience you had, where are you? I went out with Vale of Lune Hunt (first time ever hunting for horse & me) & they were fantastic! SO friendly & helpful. Have been saving up to go again but horse (only got the one) has injured a leg so is off work for the next few months.
