I always walk both my horses before mounting
confused.gif

TB is walked for a couple of hundred yards, then mounted using a mounting block and Motor is walked for 1/4 a mile, before I leap on ...

I always feel that it is good to let the saddle 'find it's place' before jumping on ...

I have got into a habit of walking Motor for 1/4 mile for various reasons really, but if I got on in the yard he would just leap about everywhere and get all stressed

The lane to my yard is 1/4 mile so I just walk him to the end

So what do you peeps do?

ETS ... I am just a happy hacker though, so no School involved

I usually walk Charlie up to the mounting block which is about 100 yrds away from the yard, then I get on with a mounting block.

I can and do get on from the ground though as it's not always safe/possible to get on from a raised item out hacking. I think everyone should be able to get on from the ground!

Leg up or mounting block depending on age/behaviour of the horse. If I have to get off when out hacking then I will remount from the ground if there isn't something I can use as a block, but I've had it drummed into me from a young age NOT to mount from the ground if there is an alternative method available due to the stress that can be placed on the back.

Hmmm yes, I have always mounted Mots from the ground, as he just freaks out if I try and mount from a block .... he hates 'things up high', but accepts me on top lol ... he is only 14.3 though

If pony is quiet I will walk him a few strides and get on with mounting block. If he is a bit excited, I will walk him around the school a couple of times before I get on using block. I am unable to mount from the ground due to a dodgy leg - I can normally find somewhere to get on if we are out hacking. If not, then we both walk home together!

I was taught (in the dark ages lol) to mount from the ground. But for many years have preferred to mount from a block for the benefit of the horse's back and saddle. Since breaking my ankle 2+ years ago I have only got on from my specially built high mounting block whenever possible or from some other vantage point. I also get off onto this high block whenever possible. I only ride big horses these days, so it's a long way down.

Seeing as how our Yard owner shows Shire Horses, everything on our yard is skewed towards tall. As a result, our mounting block is Shire Horse height and I can stand on it and just put my leg over Star's back.

I can't reach the tie up rings on his lorry sides qnd I'm 5'9"

You're probably more agile than me though

My horrible brother vaults on his 16.2TB without touching the saddle - git

I think part of the reason for usually having a leg-up is because we used to do a lot with "problem ponies" so it was a case of easiest and most stress free method.

I always use a mounting block/low wall
My mum always jokes that when she was mine age (17) she would leap on off the floor.
To be fair I'm only 5'4, horse a good 16.1 poss 16.2 and I have a dodgy hip after a bad riding accident several years ago.
As for walking before I mount the only walking is to the wall (if going for a hack) or mounting block in school which are both about 10m away. Naughty me

at home: walk horse to menage and climb up the fence to middle rail so i can gently lower myself on.for some reason iv got so adept at this we've never got a mounting block! we do have a lovely stone block in the main yard though.

at shows:
1)attempt to tighten girth and let down stirrups whilst fire breathing horse passages round me in circles
2)yell at mother to help
3)arrange fire breathing piaffing horse next to ramp
4)horse passages off in direction of PARTAAAAAAAAAAAAY
5)drag fire breathing horse back to ramp and re-arrange
6)yell at mother to help
7)admire the fact that horse can canter on the spot with its head between its knees
8)say a prayer and leap in general direction of horse whilst simultaneously yelling at mother not to let go of its head on pain of death
9)arse hits saddle, horse sets off determindely to PARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY at sideways canter with nose between knees and fire comming out all of orifices
10)yell at mother to let go

LOL you just reminded me of the times 18 years ago, when Motor was on Livery at a Riding School .... and all the girls would play, on a Sunday afternoon, with the ponies in the School and run up to them bare back and jump on ..... I tried with Mots and he just dropped his back really low and I laughed so much, I could not leap on ..... poor Motor

Back horse into fence

Drop mounting block down (aka bucket)

Leap on
grin.gif

For some stupid reason my horse's new way of winding me up
wink.gif
is to walk backwards when I try to get on, probably because I have to have the reins so short in preparation for her shooting off once I'm onboard

I usually hop on without putting a foot in the stirrup, leg straight over.

But, currently riding bareback so I'm not so confident in my leaping (huge tb withers!) and I've now realised I need to teach my horse to stand still.

Oops.

Generally jump on from the wall on the yard. Just because its so much easier as Pickle is 17.1hh!

In the school I get a block and jump on IF he is in a good mood. Sometimes its more of a game of spin the Pickle! he backs up and spins CONSTANTLY! Now I tend to resort to sticking him in a corner of the indoor school and quickly getting on.

Often, I'm lazy and get on from the floor
blush.gif
Bad, I know. Trying to break the habit though, mostly as I think it's important that Danny learns that the block does NOT eat horses and that yes, he MUST stand still for the few seconds it takes for me to get on... manners are good

Pahaha that made me laugh!

And with Bean I always got on off the block, but could get on easily enough from floor, just didn't like doing it. With Lady I'll get on from the block, but am lunging her for 5 minutes before atm, as it was only the first time I sat on her

The "Push&Hoist" technique. Sister gives me (5'3) a leg up involving a swift push of the bum onto Maggie (17'2hh). This gets me roughly halfway up the saddle. Then I nimbly hoist myself into the plate whilst Maggie walks off.
