What time do you finish your horses off at night?

I'm lucky enough to have my horses close to my house. I keep them in at night when the weather is bad - so maybe 20 weeks a year. I used to aim to stay up and finish them off with more hay and a poo pick at 10 pm. As I get older, the time gets earlier on winter nights. What time is the latest you see your horses?

About 10pm for me as they are at home. Last skip out (makes the morning muck out much easier!) and nets. Although I sometimes have to drag myself out when the weather’s bad, it’s weirdly one of my favourite times with them as it’s so calm and peaceful ☺️

Okay, so 8/8.30 isn't too bad? I used to work for a woman who insisted on 10 pm skip out and last hay top up and I still have her voice in my head telling me off!

It is lovely listening to them chomping - and they are really chilled at that time.

I would love to go out and check them late. I always intended to when we moved here and they are right outside.
As it is I probably finish them atm between 4/6 pm. They are still in during the day and out at night. Either way round though one of my horses becomes really unsettled if I disturb him in the evening. If he’s out and sees me he wants to come in and will then stand at the gate yelling for ages and vise versa, if he’s stabled and I go out he wants something and starts yelling and banging.
If I stay out of sight he stays happily doing what ever it is he’s doing!

Mine live out so they get a check any time between 3 and half 6, pony on restricted grass gets overnight hay and waters checked etc. I can see them from the house in daylight, and enough to pick them out moving/grazing 6 acres away with my maglite after dark. In winter they’re closer to the yard.

On the odd occasion they’re in overnight, I pop out about 10pm to skip out then that’s it until 6am. Neither are greedy so they don’t need hay putting in at that time, it just makes doing their stables quicker in the morning.

Not at all. I only do a late skip out (when in) for convenience. If I didn’t go out after 5-6pm they’d be fine.

I'm pretty sure mine are fine safety-wise. It just concerns me that if I give the last hay top-up too early, they will scoff it all quickly and spend many hours without.

In the winter mine is in overnight and last check from me is around 6pm unless I've got stuff to sort out and then it'll be later. I always get the feeling that they're waiting for me to leave so they can lie down and start snoring if I hang around 😄

Late! I generally finish on the yard about 7pm, out at night horses are turned out then and in at night horses fed, hayed etc. I then go back out for a late check last thing before I go to bed, when I skip out and give more hay, thats probably about midnight. I am lucky enough to have the horses at home, and I dont bother anyone by going out late.

When I used to ride Bailey I'd get home about 8pm after being there since half four. But that was because I used to spend hours drinking coffee and smoking with my friends in the tea room.

When the three of us started going the gym after the yard we'd make the 7.30pm spin class but it was a bit of a rush! So wouldn't get back home till 8.30pm.

With Lari, not being able to ride I'd often be home by 6pm. Most people would be arriving after work by then. Lari never minded going out on his own for a couple of hours before his friends were turned out so I didn't have to hang around till they'd finished riding.

Mine are at home, so stable duties are done whenever I am free during the day, and our routine is fairly relaxed. Late night checks, including taking the dogs out, are the last thing I do before I go to bed, and that can be as late as midnight/1 am, but that is a cursory look over each door by torch/phone light to make sure all is as it should be, rather than turning all the lights on etc. And yes I have called a vet out at that time for colic symptoms, but better that than finding a problem that has gone on for eight hours overnight in the morning. They get checked when I get up, and have breakfast before me, so, yes, they are rather spoilt. ;)

Yards I've worked on horses last checks were 7pm - staff left by this time and no one was on yard after that other than an odd day.
8pm - hay and water top up
5pm - private yard
6pm - (although some owners kicked about from then tol 8).

So a real range of times.
My own aren't in but on the odd nights they used to be I would be there anytime from 6-8. They had plenty water, rubber matting, thick beds and plenty of hay (they never finished the hay by morning and it went out to the field with them).
I went up to them 8am to feed and put out.
I've seen some owners put in at 3-4pm and not turn up til 10am.

In winter I take mine in around 8. Let them have their supper and leave them for the night. (Unless the weather is terrible they will come in earlier)
I don’t think mine would care to see me again 😂
