Just musing really.

Was chatting to someone today and mentioned that my dogs get fed at 2pm. They responded that that was early.

We often walk very early, so they have their breakfast when we get home at about 5am.

They then have their dinner nine hours later, at 2pm.

I suppose it would be considered early for normal people who perhaps don't give their dogs their breakfast until 8am.

So what is your routine? How long do your dogs go between meals? Do you think there is a best practice?

Breakfast between 7 and 8 and dinner, if we are there, at 4pm. If we aren’t there it’s when we get home.
They have a bonio or something at bedtime.
Bitd most people only fed once a day so it would always have been about 24 hours between meals.
If asked mine would say hourly would be good.

I don't really have a routine, just a vague morning or early evening time, mine mostly gets fed from pockets/hands via walk or training at least twice during the day, for attention and recalls or passing other dogs, or for formal obedience stuff, or on a track. Also from a Kong or via chews or bones.
Weekends when I'm training more there can be several feeds in a day. If we're travelling, a handful here and there during comfort breaks.

Since I retired, I refuse to get up before 8.00am, unless something speciall is happening. I get up and feed the dogs at about 8.30 am, then they are fed again at 6.00pm and again at 11.00pm. The 6.00pmmeal is slightly larger than the others. In the past our Labs and whatever other dogs we had, had small meals at the beginning and end of the day with a larger meal at 6. But then we got the Rottweilers and they needed 3 similar meals to be able to eat enough while avoiding bloat. The older Labs that we have now overlapped the Rotts, so their meal pattern mirrored theirs. The younger Lab is a big girl so she needs the 3 similar sized meals, too.

I always fed ours about 7am, just the one meal per 24 hours. Now I just have 1 dog he gets the bulk of his kibble 7.30am and a bit more about 5pm

Breakfast is offered when we get up. She tends to only eat it after a walk or other exercise, sometimes can be mid morning. (We used to be at yard v early and she scoffed breakfast as soon as we were home)
Tea can be 4 to 6pm - whenever we get home from a walk/work etc.

Typically close to 12 hours between meals here. Breakfast whatever time it happens to be, dinner around or after 8pm, even later if she’s been brought for a run. Bilious vomiting became an issue in the small hours when dinner was served earlier in the evening

This for my border terrier. Sometimes more than 12 hours between breakfast and dinner, interspersed with healthy snacks. Husband's cocker spaniel would eat every hour if she had the opportunity - she usually gets tea around 5.30pm and knows what time it is. They get breakfast together any time between 8 and 9.30.

Breakfast whenever we come back in from her morning run, probably around 9.30am. Dinner 6.30pm. I can never get my head round why people call dinner "tea" 🤣 you drink tea

07.30 for breakfast, then anytime from 4-6.30 of an evening . Just depends on what time we get back from the walk

Genuine question, do you only feed once a day?

It's 8am ish and 5/6pm ish here but she has bits through the day when training, normally cooked chicken breast.
Yeah just once a day she gets some treats in the morning, dinner at 2/3 and then usually bits at night. We tried feeding her twice a day but she wasnt having it 🤣

Breakfast 6.30 dinner 7.30am treat before going up stairs to bed from whoever is last up but it's variable, what is not variable is the last animals to be fed in this house are the humans 😂

After a walk, once they are cooled out. Or if we arent walking till later on about 1pm so roughly the same sort of time. If we are going out for the day they get fed 8/9am. The older boy also has a sack of kibble he helps himself to. He likes a midnight snack between 12am and 2am. The young dog just loves his food and would like breakfast as soon as he gets up, then again after his walk and again about 6pm. They are super laid back and just go with the flow. If they are genuinely hungry for any reason they tell me and I feed them. The younger boy just had a snack as he came to tell me he was dying of starvation. They don't take the mickey and it works well.

It was only when I saw your post I remembered that's what we always did when I was growing up but now I'd find it strange. Funny how you quickly get used to your routine.

Our dog wouldn't eat breakfast for a long time so had her first meal at lunchtime but since adding salmon oil (for other benefits) to her breakfast she'll eat breakfast and tea.

I think it would be different if we were home all day to do that but we work and at staggered times so easier the way it is just now 😀
