I posted on here on Monday about my lads run in with the fence over night on Sunday. Long story short, he's skinned and cut his back legs and they were both extremely swollen monday morning. Vet came and gave me Danillon and Anti biotics for 5 days and said to keep in in for at least a couple of days till swelling had settled and hopefully lameness would wear off. Anyway he really kicked off on Monday about being kept in, but eventually he calmed down and yesterday he'd obviously been a bit stressed while I wasn't there but he seemed to have accepted his situation by last night. By this morning the swelling on one of his legs had all but gone, the other leg however is still quite up around the fetlock although he doesn't seem at all lame. I walked him in hand around the yard for about 40 mins to stretch his legs and put him back in after alot of protest from him about 11.30. I have just had a phone call from my YO to say that he's been going mad in his box, and is now absolutley dripping with sweat all over. there is another pony up on the yard so he isn't alone but he obviously has decided that he doesn't want to be in anymore. I have said to the YO to give him 1/2 then check on him again and if he hasn't settled then I'll go down, but what do I do when I get there? Appart from bring him out and wash him down which I'll probably do anyway. Should I take the chance on turning him out for a couple of hours? AGHHHH!! Bloody creature doesn't know whats good for him.

I think I'd give the vets a ring & see what they advise. Mine usually ends up out as he does himself more damage than good on box rest.
Maybe you could section him off a small paddock where he can't build up any speed but is around the others & can relax a little. They may also give you some sedalin to take the edge off.

I wouldn;t keep my horse in for swelling - it tends to go down quicker if they can walk about. Depends if he'll be a complete loon in the field or not. Would probably phone the vet and see what they advise, friends horse currently having 50 acp am and pm to help him settle while being in. Not sure I would be doing that!

Agree with others: your horse is likely to do more harm than good if it is stressed. I'd chat it through with your vet - just so he knows that you are not just ignoring his advice - and then maybe Sedalin and a small "sick" paddock.

Thanks for your replies. I have just got back from the yard, I had gone down all prepared to stick him out in the school with his hay (Vet had said on Mon that this would be ok as a compromise) I sneaked down as there was no-one around and I couldn't hear him calling or banging about. He was standing at the back of his stable as quiet as a mouse! He rumbled me as I got closer and stuck his head out to say hello Mum and he seemed quite chilled. I can see he's been sweating up but he'd dried off by the time I'd got there. So I have left him again and I'll go down a bit later to give him his tea and tuck him in for the night lol! I will deffo put him out in the school for a while tomorrow as I'm inclined to agree that the swelling will go down faster if he moves about a bit more. I just now have to hope that the swelling and heat is just related to all the scrapes and not anything more sinister :-(
