Hello all, just wanted some advice really.

I have an interview for a groom / assessor at a large equine teaching yard. They have asked that candidates turn up in "appropriate equine riding attire". The actual interview sounds tough, with supervision of students on the yard, a riding assessment and written assessments.

The question is what does "appropriate riding attire" mean? Does this mean hacking jackets and cream joddies, or a slightly less formal and more practical black jods and a smart jumper with a shirt and tie underneath?

Any advice welcomed!

Bit of an odd question really. I would wear the sort of clothes that you would expect to have to work in ie clean dark coloured jodhs, suitable top with a gillet or outdoor coat ( musto or toggi type thing) short boots and chaps maybe? You know the sort of thing.

Will you be expected to ride during your interview? That might influence your attire! Personally I wouldn't go looking like I'm going to a show. Just practicle and comfortable. Good luck :-)

hmmm, I'd wear smart (clean ) joddies, probs not cream but brown/blue/black. And a smart horsey jacket /gillet? With a shirt underneath? difficult one, I doubt they expect you in show gear though.

For my horsey job interviews I usually wore my navy breeches, paddock boots, and (as it was always in winter for some reason whenever I had job interviews!) a smart jumper over a polo shirt and waterproof jacket. Hat, gloves and gaiters in a small holdall. Good luck!

Thank you, that's reassuring. I will be expected to ride, and also to do day to day yard jobs.

tictac, how would you change the outfit in order to ride? I have long black leather boots if necessary, but would prefer not to wear those as I always link them with show day nerves!

Another potentially stupid question here, but what sort of jumper?! I'll have to buy something as all mine are too old and worn. Are we talking knitted V neck type or sweatshirt?

Thank you and sorry for the silly questions!

I would wear navy/black jods VNeck Jumper with a shirt underneath - No tie & a plain/darker coloured gillet or coat.

Gaitors or 1/2 chaps if tidy.

Make sure you ride in gloves & take a whip.
Just thinking of when I was a pupil at horsey college, it was compulsory to wear gloves & carry a stick.

plain jodphurs, either black blue cream or beige, probably a polo shirt, jumper and gillet type thing, with clean polished boots or jod boots and gaiters.
