Just curious as to what weight of Stable and turnout rugs everyone uses from now on and through winter. I know it depends on the weather, but typically what are yours in? And are they living out/stabled outside or stabled inside american barn type. xx

Mine comes in overnight, in a barn system. She's an ISH not clipped yet. She wears a summer sheet overnight. The thinnest one I could find to keep her clean as she is grey.

It's too hot here still to put anything more on.

My boy is out during the day and in at night, he is a TB x ID x Shire and isnt wearing a rug yet. I still think its mild.
He will have a lw turnout on if its windy and rainy.
He isnt clipped yet. I use Rambo rugs for both stable and turnout, saves money, time, wet rugs and stinky stable rugs. I have a LW, MW and HW. Wasnt sure about it at first as I used to be The rug queen but I am now a convert.

My 17hh TB lives out 24/7, at the moment during the day he doesnt have a rug cause it has been so nice but at night I put a l/w turnout cause it does get chilly, I dont expect to put m/w on until mid nov (but also depends on what weather is like) but i live in guernsey and its a few degrees warmer then in south england, bought a h/w for him this time last year but didnt need to use it.

No rugs ATM, don't see the need for mine. I have an IDx TB who is carrying a bit of excess anyway, and I'm goiing on hols on Tuesday so didn't see the point of clipping, to rug, when he's having a week and a half off from Monday. So, he is just in his winter coat

He will be fully clipped in a couple of weeks though and will be in a LW Amigo TO (no fill) during the day with neck cover if it's raining, then a cotton sheet at night. He's in an American barn.

Once it gets colder, he will have neck cover on all of the time while outside, and will have a 110g fill full neck stable rug at night. In the wardrobe I also have a no neck stable rug which is about a 250g filling, poss not that heavy, which he will have later on in the winter, as a layer over the thinner one most likely. He also has a MW half neck TO and a MW full neck TO. He won't ever need more than the 2 MW TOs together, so I will just layer rugs. If it gets really cold, and I'm talking -10C or so (!!) then he might have the 2 stable rugs with a MW TO on top.

I'm afraid my whole yard think I'm cruel because my hairy and fat horse isn't rugged yet...

Better than it getting sticky and uncomfortable under a rug it doesn't need.

There are fat natives on our yard wearing rugs already and not clipped.

Don't get me started. He is carrying a bit of excess weight (as in he isn't fat but it won't hurt him to lose a bit) and he's got a hell of a winter coat coming through so I figure he'll probably manage not to waste away in the week I'm away on my hols

I am amazed at the amount of fat horses I know who are rugged, unclipped, already

Hmmn, that's kind of the plan with Star. She's a bit porky at the mo.

She is getting hairy but not sweating when exercised, so why make things awkward by clipping and rugging lol. There is plenty of time for that and we'll all hate the sight of rugs by Christmas as it is:)

my old boy is in a mw stable rug at night as i think its fairly cold here and when i have left him in anything less he is chilly when i check him later on. Hes ruggles in the day while its sunny unless the wind is really chilly or we get rain.

But didn't you know that most horses dissolve in the rain? Or might get muddy, and god forbid if the owner had to brush them!

None of mine are rugged and won't be for a while yet.

Pathetic welshxarab is fat but wimpy and has the most useless winter coat too. He'll stay unrugged until I feel so mean over him shivering that I cave in and put a LW full neck on. He'll then have no more than a medium fullneck over the whole winter.

Equally fat 2yr old cob will be unrugged all winter, mainly cos a) he grows a coat a polar bear would be proud of and b) he HATES being rugged and wriggles out of them daily.

Ditto larger cob.

Big HW hunter will be unrugged until she she is clipped, IF she is clipped. Again, coat like a teddy bear. It'll be full neck LW if just a bid/trace, but HW is hunter clipped.

Nothing atm, and mine are out 24/7, and shall be staying that way all winter.

I am going to buy a 100g LW rambo for Be, as her main winter rug, as she won't be working anymore - she's a good dooer, who doesn't feel the cold.

Star will be clipped (I'm putting it off as long as possible

) and will have a MW or HW rhino on during winter, depending on the temp - she never needs more than one rug.

MW Turnouts. (No idea what fill that is)

Live out 24/7. Won't be rugged until the weather gets a whole lot colder than it is now (maybe November) or if they start to look cold, depends on the horse. None of them, apart from the mini, are growing much of a coat at all yet, but it is only September.

Pidge is strange
wink.gif
he's ISH but more TB than ID. Fully clipped but still in his fly sheet even at night in the field, plenty warm enough

even when it drops to 6'

and he isn't well covered just fit

Last year when it dropped to -11.5 he was still in his MW rambo. I use the Amigo sheets, Rambo duo (100g) and Rambo MW (200g) rugs and when he comes in at night he wears them overnight so they dry if wet and he goes out in a nice warm dry rug in the morning.

i have an open stable system (stable in field that they can walk in and out of when they please) My sec a and my appy x arab are naked at the mo, will be in lightweights when raining and medium weights when it starts to get cold. trying to leave the rugging up till they really need it. if they start to get really chilly i will add another layer or buy heavyweights. i have a little welshie too that will be naked all winter.
have a sneaky feeling that appy doesn't like wearing rugs as he has tried straight away to tear his new ones off when i have tried them on him for size

so it should be fun

one of mine is in at nite and just has cotton sheet on until clipped then will have light weight rug and fleece on the other one stops out 24/7 is in light weight just at nights nothing in day then as the months go on it will go to m/w then heavy weight!

Mels is fully clipped, In a LW at the moment and then a masta light quilt (100g??) at night. My lil welsh/shp type is naked outside and has a sheet inside with a low chaser. Both of them are a little 'well'!! x

ATM the TB is in a LW turnout/rain sheet with a fleece underneath (out 24/7), and is unclipped. Willl soon be in MW, probably full neck, once clipped, then when really cold will be in heavyweight TO probably with something else underneath when out, and heavyweight stable rug at night.
He really feels the cold and drops weight just like that- he's already looking ribby just from the cold couple of days we had.

My TBx is in overnight, out during the day. I don't clip her.

When the temp overnight drops below about 8 degrees, she'll have a 100g Stable rug. When its below about 4 degrees, she wears her MW turnout in the stable. If its below freezing she wears her heavyweight, so not very often - and she never wears more than rug either.

She will be turned out naked, unless the weather is vile or its very very cold.

Ed is still out naked
grin.gif
and will be until I can be reasonably sure we wont have scorching days like today was!

He will however be hunter clipped by the end of Oct at which time he will go into a medium weight.

connor is a irish sports horse not clipped yet as winter coat has barley started to come through
he is out genralyl all the time although will come in around 2 times a week get worked alot and is as i found out today an awfull lot fitter than i really thought he has not rug on throught he day and a medium to light weight at night am going to try and keep that on till i get him clipped
i dont have mahy choices on the rugs front i need to get some more but dont really no what
i have atm a sweat rug, a medium to light weight with no neck can get a hood for it though, and a heavy weight with no hood at the momet.
am planning on getting hoods for both of them and a stable quilt to go under the rugs for when i get him clipped

Charlie (TB) and Millie (Section A) both have Hunter Clips, Millie is in a 200g MW and Charlie is in a 100g (got that back to front I think
blush.gif
) Charlie will probably go up to a 200g in the next couple of days depending on the weather.

I don't over rug mine but I do make sure they don't get cold once clipped, it means I only have to clip once or twice instead of the 6 plus times a lot of people seem to do.

The weather is a real pain at the moment, really warm in the day and dropping really cold at night making it hard to know which rugs to put on and when.
