My poor rydales are leaking in the extreme calf length mud we have at the moment so I think some welly buying may be in order. Can't believe the price of hunters, haven't bought any in years and last I remember they were £40! Are they still worth it or are there any cheaper brands that will suffice?

Don't bother with hunters, I was a total hunter fanatic as they fit me so well, but I am lucky if I get 6 months out of a pair.
Joules are the same in my experience but they are SOO pretty!!

I've swapped to Ariat wellies now (cost the same as hunters), really comfy, so far very hardwearing, lined with thin neoprene so toasty feet and you can ride in them too. I was surprised how nice they are to ride in actually, they don't feel welly-ish IYSWIM!

They're expensive but so worth it- Le Chameau. Gorgeously comfortable and given how much time I spend in them I don't begrudge spending so much (well I do, but I just put up with it!) Mine are heading into their second winter having been worn all summer too and doing fine, generally they last quite well. (Vs my mums Hunters which haven't even lasted a year)

Currently wearing Mr Tesco 'specials'.

I'm sick to the back teeth of paying an arm and a leg for boots that only last 3 months. So am boycotting all traditional equine wear. (Probably won't last long, but am enjoying my spotty blue ones for the moment.

Ah a subject close to my heart, have tried everything from normal Hunters, Rockfish, Joules, Ariat (didn't fit), Aigle Parcours etc etc. All not great IMHO but..... a friend of mine has recommended these to me and though was dubious as are made made by Hunter, they are much, much more heavy duty (muck out 4 horses and walk groups of dogs each day) and so far (a month in) am very impressed. They are called the Balmoral and I got them from here http://www.discountwellies.co.uk/ProductDescription.asp?Product=Hunter Balmoral Classic Wellingtons
Not the cheapest but very reasonable compared to some wellies and I didn't get the neoprene ones but feet are kept warm to date. Hope this helps.

i agree with millipops, hunters don't last that long, i've had mine for a year and both the buckles have snapped off and the soles are very worn.

saying that, i wouldn't buy anything else, they're the only wellies that i find comfy and don't rub, even if i wear them bare footed...not that i do....lol

Dont buy hunters, the stopped making them in the UK, and now the quality is appaling, my last pair only lasted a month. I like muck boots, cost about £45, but are toasty warm, and mine have lasted 2 years.

I'm not a fan of Hunters, have borrowed my mums on occasion and they seem really stiff and uncomfy compared to mine. I've had a pair of Aigles for about 8 years now. They have had LOADS of wear (Every day during the winter and in our wet summers they also get loads of use!) and I have ridden in then, although I prefer my proper long riding boots. They are really comfy for long walks with the dogs and I've never had blisters from them. I think they were about £70, but work paid so I'm not complaining! I will definately buy another pair when these give up the ghost as they've lasted for so long.

Ah see I would always go hunters - I bought mine 5 years ago - and I wear them everyday!!
They havent got so much as a hole in them, they are starting to look their age but tbh they get abused quite a lot

My 2 year-old hunters just split tonight while I was trying to find naughty horsey in the dark field! I got a very wet muddy foot! Yuck! It was freezing too!

Thanks for all the suggestions - love the look of the ariats but they are expensive. Hmmm Xmas pressie perhaps

Sad to hear the quality of hunters has gone downhill since I last had them. Still they are a pretty reasonable price on the discount wellies site so may be worth a bash.

I do very cheap and cheerful, the basic Dunlop? green ones, from feed mills shop, they last me about a year (though winter and the acid water off the muck heap takes its toll) but are usually only about a fiver so I think it works out quite well rather than buy an expensive pair that I would hope would last for years but don't sometimes. Is that a long sentence i've just typed or what?!

£45 on wellies that last less than three months though is just a waste, surely??

.

Muckboots - neoprene so warm and toasty and waterproof no matter how deep the mud or water. My pair have just died - I wear them everyday in the yard and to walk the dogs for probably 4/5 months a year. The reason they have died is that i have worn the tread away!! Will be getting another pair though.

You buy cheap, you buy twice.... An old one, but soooo true. I love hunters, have noticed they have lasted less well recently than before - most recent pair lasted only 3 years

. However, Joules last less than 6 months in my experience. My current fave is backing up CLY. Hunter Balmoral. AMAZING. Mine have neoprene lining but cost less than any others I could find with neoprene. Seriously comfortable and WARM.

Just bear in mind how much of your life is spent wearing wellies, then factor in the cost...

My mum has been through the set - hunters, joules, lowthers with neither lasting very long.
She has now swapped to dunlops and they have lasted ages with no signs of splitting anytime soon. Also, at £6 a pair they are a bargain!!

(my friend has had some ariats, and found they didn't last long - but she does do some strange things making no set of boots last long!!!)

Hunters are NOT the qood quality, dependable wellies that they once were

No one at our yard wears hunters nowadays because they allways split along the side of the ball of foot within about 6 months or so.

It's such a shame. I used to live in Hunters as a teenager. I wrote to Hunter to complain, but got a weak reply, and they said their manufacturing processes hadn't changed. The thing is, I remember my old hunter wellies having a more rubbery feel to them, and the new green hunter originals feel more 'plasticy'??

I bet you still have a pair of the last old batch that were still of decent quality. You'll be shocked and disapointed when you buy a new pair of hunters now. I think it was about 5 years ago that I noticed the deterioration starting.

Ditto Misinterpreted - I have a pair of hunters from 6years ago and they're still going strong. One that basis my friend bought herself a pair 2yrs ago. Had them replaced 4times in a year before giving up. She now has the Ariats and they seem to be lasting well.

I have the Toggi Ladies Wanderers and am very please with them. Half the price of other decent wellies, neoprene lined and seem to be a made of a slightly different, tougher, rubber. They are fairly short however, so not great if you have long legs

I too have just sadly retired my 10 year old hunters and having seen the poorer quality of the new ones, have now also swapped to Le Chameau. Ive had them about 5 months now and wear them every day and have been very impressed at how comfy and sturdy they are.

They are well worth the extra pennies, but either Le Chameau or Aigle ones are fab

Although I am currently sporting a pair of Sherwood Forest ones that one cost £25

They are super comfy and you can get neoprene lined ones which are warmer.

My Hunter Wellies have started to go the rubber is starting to perish.

I dont know what my chances of a refund are I bought them 25 years ago at Badminton and I cant find the receipt.

What is worse I cant remember which stand I bought them from.

I can now firmly tell you waht not to buy!!

I bought a pair of Brightly coloured wellies with sunflowers on them and they lasted 10 days sole came loose and leaked got our money back (£15).

Found a new pair week before last with galloping horses on them had them 10 days and they have split.(£16)

And what have my wellies been used for - MUcking out and wheeling a barrow full of poo!!
