Hi All

I have a 4 year old rescued cob (15hh and only lightweight) he's been broken since August and just taken everything slowly. He has been fab so well behaved and hacking out well even little bits alone.
In the last few weeks he has been going through a real 'cocky' stage but thought it would pass!
I went out with a friend on Saturday just on the road and he was on his toes so we didn't go far on the way home he had a rear and went fairly high but seemed to scare himself so thought that was ok. We got nearer the yard and saw a tractor (he has been around them and even passed a car and trailer on the road) he was not scared he just ran backwards reared downhill and slipped ending up on top of me!! Luckily I have escaped with just muscle damage and nothing broken although I'm in agony!! He is fine got up and ran back to the yard and a little stiff..

I'm not sure what to do now I'm 99% sure it wasn't pain related he was being naughty but I will get him checked. He's stabled at night but goes out for at least 7 hours a day and is fed a small amount of happy hoof and has hay.

What should I do next with him? I don't really know how to move on as rearing is the one thing I cannot cope with in a horse!!

Any help would be great x

4 years old and a rescue, he needs to be started again. How do you know his behaviour is not pain related, have you had him assessed? I would suggest you stop riding him before he hurts himself.

^^^ this

A lot of horses are playing up atm, think it may be grass coming though.

Don't do anything without the help of an instructor - and stay off the roads.

If possible i would get him living out 24/7 to burn off any excess energy and get him and his tack thoroughly checked, if all ok then seek professional help to stop it becoming a habit. Good luck

He was fully checked by the vet and had his teeth checked, he has had physio and his saddle fitted. Obviously don't know if not pain but I would be very surprised as he has been ridden frequently and not had any issues.

Are you inadvertently tightening up on the reins during these incidents?

Generally when horses rear it is because they can't go forward. It can then become an evasion habit, but in your case it is more likely that the horse felt that 'up' was the only option left.

Well something is clearly not right is it? Horses rarely rear for no reason. Perhaps you need an instructor to help you and your horse.

Long rein is a good idea will do that once I'm back up and running.. Thanks

I didn't pull him but it happened so quickly he ran back reared and then slipped so I don't think he meant to go over usually if he naps I release contact so I'm not fighting him

I know that and we do have lessons I am also very experienced and have had him for over 2 years so have done so much work in hand and getting him used to everything. He will be checked but I think he is feeling a bit well at the moment and was just over excited.
