After a great schooling session this afternoon I came home and checked the show schedules, however there were no unaffiliated dressage competitions until late July - when i'm on holiday.

I haven't been out (and neither has Gov) since late last August for a whole host of reasons and I can't help but feel like we're not really moving forward and he's 7 this year. I know he's coming on but I just feel like getting out to more competitions would be good for him and good for moving us forwards.

So my option is have a crack at affiliated Novice 32 on a ticket or wait for another unaffiliated. Governor works nicely and he's showing self carriage and consistency. We haven't exactly established medium trot or canter but I feel we can show a few good strides. Would I be chucking myself in the deep end or should I just go for it?

Go for it - I thought riding affiliated would be a huge deal but it isn't really - I don't find the standard between affiliated and unaffiliated much different on some days.

Hi

You should just go for it and compete. I wouldn't worry too much at novice level, just get out there! The more you do the easier it will be and also the easier it will be to find out what you need to work on.

I am sure your horse will be fine, he looks nice

You dont need a ticket to do prelim in the open section - its a great way to see how you would have fared if you had been in the restricted as its all judged by the same judge.
