What would you do??? Escaped horse

OK - so quick question - what would you do if you received a phone call at 7.30am this morning telling you that your 18month filly had escaped from her field in to a neighbouring field, with other horses?

at the day I have had today - and I am resisting the urge to have a full out rant!!!!

I said rush over but it would depend really........

If I wasnt at home and I couldnt get there straight away (but surely I'd have checked the pony or had someone else check it that morning before I went out)

If I didnt pick up the call because mobile was somewhere else

If I had asked if the horse was alright and explained my sitch

Although I'd have tried my best to get there asap or sent someone else and been full of apologies

I take it none of this happened?

At 7.30 on a Saturday morning I would still be in bed but if I received a phone call saying my horse had escaped I would get up in a flash and go and get it!

Well I would rush over immediately or if I couldn't, ie I was a 100 miles away, then I would ring someone else to go over immediately! BUT when our old next door neighbours horse fell onto our land (they raised their land by 1m over the years with tipping rubble and earth on it) they wouldn't answer our phone calls and when my dad stopped him in the lane, he said he didn't want it back and when I had resigned myself to having acquired another pony about 3 weeks later he decided to call to come and get it and he wanted it NOW

i'm so glad we don't live next door to them anymore!

The woman is a livery at my friends yard up the road - her pony is in the field next to mine, with 2 other horses. Rudely woken this morning to mad horses galloping around the field. As soon as I saw what was happening I called my friend - to pass the message on that the woman's pony was in my field.

The woman took over an hour to call me back - and only then called me back because I had pestered my friend to ask her livery WTF was going on. She then told me that she wouldn't be able to come around for about an hour (this was about 8.30) as she was waiting for someone to come round to see her at 9.30!!!

I don't really know this woman - but know where she lives - and it is no more than a 5 min drive away from the yard.

Now personally I would have been round in a flash right there and then to collect the pony - make sure it wasn't hurt and take it out of the care of someone I don't know. She didn't ask if the pony was ok (she was fine) and didn't actually ask if I would be able to take care of it for the day.

I have since been waiting around like a bloody idiot for her to come and collect the poor little pony. SHe finally arrived at 4pm with no apologies, no thanks no nothing.

I asked her to block the hole in the hedge her pony has created BEFORE she turned it back out (not an unreasonable request I thought) and she told me she would sort it out before the pony was turned back out. However, I then saw as I was riding in my field that she just turned it back out again!!!

I am a bit beyond belief at this woman - she is supposedly a knowledgable horse woman - and the pony was lovely, really friendly - and the lack of acknowledgment that she ought to be taking care of the pony was astounding!

Sorry - cookies and ice cream for everyone who made it through that! This is the first time I have really ranted on here - but I am just really wound up about this! (not that you can tell obviously!!!)

I think she and you are lucky there were no serious injuries to your animals......

In your shoes, I would be angry too.

If she had a problem getting to you for a genuine reason, then surely a phone call to you and asking if you could deal with it for her would only be common courtesy?

At the very least a large bottle of wine should have been given to you!!

Sorry Mrs M - operator error!!

When I had got all my gang into their stables this morning I did congratulate my mare, and dad's pony on not beating the stranger up - and then congratulated my arab on not getting beaten up!!

TBH I think if it had been the other way round and one of mine had got into their field, the likely hood would have been that I would have been and retrieved the ned before they even realised! Maybe just different standards of care for my animals??
