i have been contemplating a new horse to share with my 17 yr old daughter for r/c stuff, hacking etc as my older mare is recuperating from a tendon injury and although sound i will never jump or do fast work. However daughter is hopefully going to uni next September so sensible me thought i will just stick with my girl and be happy to hack. However a lovley, just my type Hanoverian/connie cross mare 15.3 has been advertised locally and is now available for loan. I am reluctant to introduce a new horse at home now ,for fear of silly behavior damaging tendon so would need livery over the winter and use of facilities to keep a new horse going ,so that all adds up. in an ideal world i would buy or loan a horse in spring however i know chances of the right sort of horse appearing is not always the case. Daughter will also be busy with exams but im itching to get out and about and have fun. sensible head also knows costs are also more over winter. Should i be rational, practical and sensible and wait for better timing or risk it ?

i think if you have the time and money and your able to see to it when your daughter cant then i dont see why you couldnt it just do you want to be looking after another horse in the winter as well as your own?

yes i could go but there would be no chance of a sensible head if i like it. looking after her at a different place as long as near home would not be a problem. Financially ,im in the same boat as a lot of people but can do it.its my fault as i cant stop looking for horses and to be fair i dont find many i would even want to see.

If time and money aren't an issue, it sounds perfect actually. Put new horse in livery where you have facilities to ride in winter and then by spring you can introduce it to your mare and daughter will be able to enjoy a summer with it before going off to uni.
I'd look at the horse primarily as being suitable for you though, rather than your daughter. She's at a busy time in her life when other demands on her time will take her away from horses.
Head or heart ? Head first always. Being able to offer the resources necessary for a new horse is the first consideration, followed close second by heart. The heart is the motivation that has you ploughing through the snow on those dark winter mornings.
Good luck. I'm biased though..my heart makes my head comply every time.

yes horse needs to be suitable for me as realistically i will have the bulk of the work especially at exam time. my heart usually rules my head but trying to be sensible and remembering last winter. i am also very cautious about getting it wrong as weve had a horrendous last year with 2 broken horses, lots of tears etc although one has come right the other didnt. for daughter i would also make sure a future horse was the right one. the horse i like is 5 so fairly young but a safe hack with the basics established ready to go out and learn. i like substantial horses and she is a nice old fashioned stamp and a mare which is what i want.... are there no head people here?

go and have a look, TBH when i was doing my A Levels (dont ask when i feel old enough already) It was a welcome break to go for a ride, it cleared my head and i actually worked out calvin cycle whilst going cross country! xx

Doesn't look like it! :)

FWIW I'm in same position. I am desperate to ride again after a break of five years but I still have 3 youngsters to sell and 2 in foal mares plus a short term lodger! Yes, they can all fit in and will be kept at home so no livery costs but do I really need another? Head says no but heart says yes. It's bloody hard especially as I've 2 short listed to see which would fill the bill for a happy hacker.:(

If your finances are sound then I'd go for it - and cheer you all the way too as something like this might not come up again too quickly.

Did you really expect any head people on here?
My ID died in July and I immediately started looking on-line but didn't see anything that I really wanted to look at until very recently.
I already have a horse to ride, which is kept at home along with sister's horse and a retired cob, who of course won't be with us for much longer, although she is healthy atm.
After long and careful thought, sis and I decided to wait until at least Spring before looking at another. We considered the costs and amount of work involved in another, compared to the amount of riding we might be able to do over the winter, as we both work full-time.
So I suppose that was a head decision, although we also took into account that my mare and the ID really didn't get on and had several fights. We don't want her to fight with the next horse we get, so decided to wait (for now).

dq--- i do agree with this. riding has always been therapeutic for both of us.

Maesfen- why is life not predictable. ? i had just got my head round everything and had a very quiet winter planned, although i do believe everything happens for a reason.... i tend to see signs in everything and this horses name is very similar to my current and last horse, just a few letters different. is that spooky or am i just losing the plot?

Hey Debs, glad to see you're moving on :)

It's got to be a decision you make, based on whether you think you are going to be able to afford the time and the money. I have just got a new one after a few weeks of looking (you'd like him if you like the chunky ones), but I have got to say it's really tough back to doing 2 in the winter (and my veteran's still on box rest).

I would echo what Irish-Only and DQ said about going to look at it though, there were tons that I loved from the adverts, only to get there & be very disappointed. The one I've just bought I almost didn't go to see  but as soon as he came out of the stable, I knew; when he was being shown to me under saddle I couldn't wait for them to finish so I could get on :D
