What would you do? - New horse issue

You can get the bloods tested up to 6 months after purchase. I urge you to do it. Could be anything from ACP, bute, to anti-psychotics or hard core anaesthetics e.g. Mepivacaine.

Don't let these sellers get away with it! We all need to form a united front!

Yes op I completely understand what you mean about rearing being his first option. I wouldn't be holding my breath he will change and would take action now.

im having same problem, new mare arrived 4wks ago was on working livery at a local riding school.
never told of any vices. was fab to hack alone and in company for first 3weeks now does same as your boy rears and spins if doesnt get her own way. can be very scary especial on roads.
we are sticking to schooling at mo and only doing horse hacks in company. its so frustrating as all was well and good.

horses if only they understood the spoken words of your safe and i will look after you. gona be a long road with this mare i think.
ive asked old owner if she has ever done this and said no kinda believe her as was ridden in riding school by beginners. so who know how long this will take. fingers crossed we can sort it soon as solo hacking is my chill out time arfter a poo day at work :o

Weird as it sounds - its is a really good thing that he isn't scared and is just being a dangerous prat! if you can master it and show him you wont stand for it he should stop...if it is fear related I always think that is scarier as a horse in flight mode is flippin clumsy and stupid.

If you want to send him back then no-one could blame you. If you are keeping him then I would revert back to groundwork, rope halter, get his feet moving, use an instructor if you can. You said he is bad to lead - so as Cortez mentioned he is thinking backwards....so he is likely to be the same way under saddle.

Good luck whatever you decide

I used to run a riding school our horses worked three hours six days a week ,we turned them over a far bit but always had to impress on the new owner the huge difference it was to go into a private home.
We often sold to cilents which worked well but had a few come back from private homes it was usually to much food to little work I worked with a few who had hiccups and they adjusted with time.
I hope yours comes right with time I was always sad to see my favourites go but happy to as its much nicer to belong to one owner.

she is getting worse now refusing to go in to the school and once in refuses to move then rears spins. im unsure what to do next to be honest, we have had her saddle checked and fine. going to speak to dentist and also have back checked. this behaviour started when her season did so not sure if taking pee or has bad pmt???
least just say my little school misstress is any thing but that at the moment:(

I agree with Cortez, I think the horse is trying it on so you should really get to know him schooling and spending time with him, and he may be OK, although he is probably still going to rear as a reaction to certain things. This may be a deal breaker for you and that would be understandable! A lesson may help you to ride through it more effectively. Personally I find it quite hard to go against my 'foetal position, hold onto reins' instincts in such situations, I know I shouldn't, but its so hard not to and I don't realise what I am doing so can be useful to have someone tell me!

Hi I have one of these a mare really tried it on stop dead rear buck spin backwards I found always carry a stick (how do they know when you don't) just for s reminder on her shoulder lots of legs and a growl even if we only go up the lane and back just to make a point as mine does try to take the **** as most of the time we have no problems and they do get worse when coming into season
:)Hang in it will get better

The point of buying from a dealer is that you should bet getting what it says on the tin.

It would seem this horse is far from that - so I would send it back.

Good luck OP, let us know how you get on.

i would already be asking for my money back ! rearing for any reason in an older horse is no good whether its an old habit or not. the seller obviously new about it or wouldnt have said about the standing martingale! can she come and ride him ? if she refuses you have ur answer!

I think try him in a standing martingale. Yes, it might have been an issue in the past but if this fixes it I see no problem now.

If the hacking was such an important thing, did you hack him out on 2 or 3 occasions or purely the once before buying him?

You mention she's now refusing to go in the school. Its a bit odd she did to begin with, from the sounds of it she's trying it on with you?

Hey again! I have since spoken with my instructor and an independent trainer. My RI came out for a ride with me over the weekend and witnessed first hand what he does. I managed to ride him forward for most of the ride although he tried several times to spin after slamming the anchors at a patch of mud. Walking up a hill, with a car approcaching from behiond (he is toally unfazed by any traffic btw), he threw himself right up on his hind feet & spun round whilst rearing - catching me completely off guard. I stayed on by pure chance my RI's horse was next to us and I bounced off her and back in to my saddle :(
She agreed that there was b*ggar all there for him to do what he did and said personally she wouldn't ride him out either

After seeking legal advice, a letter has gone off to the previous (private seller) owner stating I do not believe this is a new behaviour and that he is very established with it - and actually a danger to myself & other road users (as he has now twice attempted to leg it despite cars being in the close vicinity). It's not at all rude but clear in my opinion that he is not the horse they made him out to me, nor true to the description of "no vices" he was sold as - and his receipt states. I have given them 2 weeks to resolve it (refund and collect said neddie) or my only option would be court if it can't be sorted tis way
Tempted to totally give up on horses now tbh. Had enough of the bad luck :(

Is his tack fitted correctly, and have you had a very rule out any physical issues?

Saddle is a very good fit, teeth done 4 months ago and recent back check. The annoying thing is he schools beautifully, but reverts in to a total pig as soon as you venture off the yard. Incredibly spooky and doesn't matter at all if you have another horse with you

Funnily enough they ignored this when I suggested it ;)

I am ensuring I think with my head and not my heart, despite the fact I'm sure this will thrill certain other people as they seem to thrive on my misfortune, but hey ho!!

I tried him the once tbh but we did encounter fast/large vehicles/scary mud piles etc and he didn't seem bothered. I was very clear verbally and in writing that this horse be good to hack - which they said he was. It's the fact he rears first before all other behaviours or reactions that concerns me - and with NO warning either

My lad does go in the school but I believe another lady on here is having problems getting her mare to go in the school now.
He is taking the P on the roads, but I am not happy with a horse that goes straight up without me even having a chance or an opportunity to know about it and actually try and stop him. My RI ensureed I rode forward/positively t'other night and she couldn't believ he did it/what he did
