:(My 2 and half year old is about 14.1h and still growing. I think he may make 14.2 at a push 14.3. I'm 5ft 4 and weigh about 11stone ( i do need to lose a stone) should i hang on and wait to see what he makes or sell him? i have the opportunity of a 16.2hh on loan WVTB but he is going to make 17hh and im worried that i maybe over horsed. Me and my youngster are very attached to each other he is very aware of who i am and we have a great bond i would be devastated to let him go after i've waited all this time...Do you think he will be big enough for me. he's ID X NF...

Think you know the answer to this, you say you would be devastated to lose him so keep him and see what happens. If you lose the stone you say you need to then thats got to be even better. You will only regret it if you let him go after waiting so long.

I'm 6'1" tall, weigh 12 stone and ride a 14.2hh purebred NF with no issues. So, I would say a 14.2hh IDx NF will carry you with ease.

BTW, that sounds like a really nice cross, any pics?

NeilM sorry can't find any pics right now. Hubby has filed them off somewhere. Hes is a lovely looking Pony at the mo. still got a big head and ears but the rest is catching up. would make a great show pony or working huntee type i think.

I'm not that experienced, but I would think it would depend on your boys type,
if he's fine then personally I would try to lose a bit weight, think of the incentive, I am naturally skinny and can't get above 8 stone so have no idea of how hard losing weight is, if he's chunkier then I don't see a problem Imo a good bond is a gift and makes life much easier. I am 5' 7 and would feel overhorsed on a 17h.
Good luck in making your descision

If it helps, I'm your height and around 9 stone. I have a 13.2hh 5yo WBxWelsh, and a 4yo 14hh WBxWelshArab, backed both and jump/dressage both. Neither has any problems carrying me. My OH has a 13.2hh chunky, leg on each corner NFx and she carries 12 stone 7 without even blinking.

Thanks everyone, i look at him and he still looks scrawny on the front end which is what gives me the doubts but i know he still has a lot of filling out to do.

I am going through the exact same thing, my baby is 15 months old and standing at about 13.3/14hhs i am hoping he will make at least 15hhs but he is alot finer than i have had in the past. I am currently loosing weight to maintain at about 11 and half when i come to back him. So i am going to keep him until i know how he will be then go from there, i would hate to sell him now then see him in a few years and him being exactly what i wanted.

JaneyP:- Thats exactly what i'm worried about. I know he is going to make a super show pony/working hunter type and i would be devastated to see what he had grown into and him not to be mine. Th eother option is to turn him away but i'm too soft and he likes his stable and sleep too much....

Height isn't as important as their build/how much bone they have. I am 5'9" and about 13.5 stone (on a good day  ) . One of my boys is a fairly heavy weight traditional cob with PLENTY of bone. He is only 14.2 but he takes my leg up and carries me easily :)

I think he has plenty of bone. he seems to take after his ID Dam in that region. along with his head and ears, his body takes after his NF Sire !!! odd combination and how Dam and Sire managed it i will never know as she is 16.2 and he is about 13.3hh.....

I'm 5'2" 11 stone and ride my 14.1 NF type x ID very comfortably.
She was very scrawny as a 2yr old but fell abroad nicely and can carry my weight with ease.
Her dam was 12.2 NF mare and her sire was ID.
She was a happy mistake. :)

Keep him! My 14hh 6yr old welsh D mare will quite happily carry my 5ft 9, 13.5 stone friend for half an hour schooling, probably could do for a lot longer but never tested it yet!

She (the mare, not my friend!) is highly opinionated and would not in any circumstance keep anyone on that she thought was too heavy, they would be ditched in the first 30 seconds of being on, let alone walking anywhere!

So seeing as your boy should make a nice chunky lad, you will be absolutely fine on him, whether you lose a stone or not!

Oh and I am the same height as you, nearly same weight and said mare will quite happily go on a long hack, fun ride, jump, technically 2ft at the moment but clearing it by about another ft!! And I backed her and broke her in myself!

Absolutely lovely.

If you're in no rush I'd hang on and see - he will grow for years if he is only two... and fill out a lot as well. He's good strong legs even now, and a nice wide frame, so quite likely to carry you. He looks very like one of my ISH - nice wide chest!

Awww thank you...x

I think you should keep, I wouldn't have said you would be too tall/heavy for him at all judging by his breeding.
Obviously depends on how much bone he has, and he will fill out a lot, when my mare was 2/3 yrs old she looked so scrawny and weedy, nows she's going on 6 and she's filled out heaps and is a nice hunter type!

Well all those lovely comments have filled me with bags on confidence in him making a decent size he's 14.1ish now and still bum high, 2 years 5 months old so still some growing yet.

I think you are worrying about nothing.

At 5ft4 you will not be too tall for him at all. He's IDxNF you said, both great weight carriers so I would expect that he will be a much better fit for you than a 17hh warmblood!

I'm 5ft8 and weigh a bit more than you and I can comfortably ride a 14.3hh ISH, I feel a bit big jumping him but generally I'm fine on him.

He'll have no problem carrying you Starwind honestly xx

I would defo keep him.
Even with the weight I'm sure you'd be fine, i love ponies; they're so hardy :)
With the weight off, it would be even better.
KEEP HIM :D
