If you had a dog who was EXTREMELY intelligent.
A quick learner.
Having to be left alone for most of the day.
In all honesty a working dog and not a pet.
Probably a dog that would thrive on a fulltime out door life but not being kept in a kennel.
A dog who could probably make a great sniffer dog as they work for the reward of a green furry tennis ball!

If the dog is happy then why change the status quo?
If the dog is wrecking the place, eating itself, it's owner, then yeah, give it a job.
Is there anything stopping the owner from getting involved in some sort of activity or doggy discipline/hobby?
I work full time and I still work the dog morning and evening.

What CC said
If the dog is happy and suffers no behavioural issues, then is there a need to change, except to find activity to do in all the spare time the owner has and plenty of exercise inbetween.

Also, bear in mind a dog that goes well at home might not make an ideal service dog but could be a great gun dog or a great agility dog.

I know a guy who assesses service dogs and they are very, very rigorous.

Male owner has had to take extra work as female owner has had to ease off from working due to MS getting progressivley(sp) worse.

One of the regulars we meet out and about with Mills, we hadn't seen them for a while and we did wonder. Today I saw Mr Jangles (yeah like all dog owners I don't actually know his name but he is Beau Jangles dad!! :) ) his wife sadly has gone rapidly down hill, if I remember I'm sure she originally had a good prognosis but since Christmas has gone from fully mobile to on sticks on a good day.
He has ended up having to work in Manchester Mon-Fri afternoon.
Beau is showing no sign of distress but Mr J is worried that in the long run he may suffer and they love him loads and TBH I think he is a comfort to Mrs Jangles.

In the UK can you train your own dog to be an assistance dog???

Vizzy posted a link to an organisation, I will see if I can dig it out - breed, age?
Could they hire a dog walker or even a local keen teenager who would do it for buttons?

He is a mutt.
Springer x lab x collie x dirty rampant JRT for all we know!!
He is 15months about as big as a springer but so much calmer.
He is so obidient its unreal! Even as a pup he was wonderful.
I know it sounds stupid but if he could speak English!!!
He is laid back. Quick, agile I really could go on forever.
Seriously he is practically perfect and I think thats why they are worried about the future.

THANK YOU VIZZY!!

LOL
Seriosly Guys, Thank you all....AGAIN!
I knew you lot would be able to sort it.
Mrs Jangles is already suffering enough....they have no children due to 'nature' so Beau is their baby and I really think it would not do her health any good to lose Beau.
