What would you understand by a "mareish Temperament"

I've seen an advert for a mare I quite like the sound of but she is described as having a "mareish temperament". What is this likely to imply?
 
Mine is ears back and grumpy. She does not like other horses and takes a while to warm up to new people. She is a typical scowly mare on rides although isn't aggressive.

In season however she is very squealy, herd bound and over sensitive.

Probably wouldn't have another!

Thank you! I've had my two mares for over 17 years but haven't experienced anything like that with either of them.
 
It could be anything from "You can tell when she is in season" to the grumpiest animal you have ever met. We have had a dozen mares and none of them has ever been unhandleable/unrideable when in season. Some of them have been very maternal with other animals and people.
 
Agree it could mean lots of things. You'd need to ask the owners.

I have one I'd describe as mareish, she's squealy with other horses, difficult to ride when in season, otherwise very soppy and cuddly, protective of horses she thinks of as "her" herd. generally quite changeable but also a real trier. I LOVE her. I'm definitely a mare person!
 
i've a herd of mares at the moment, and while most are fine and even tempered, the one I'd describe as mareish has a VERY, VERY strong personality - opinions on absolutely everything, needs to show people how gorgeous she is, is extremely loud and demonstrative and demands affection and attention constantly. I absolutely adore her, and find other horses very bland and boring now compared to her. I was always a gelding person, but she has definitely won me over to mares!

This is my mare. She is very opinionated. BUT she wants to work! Anything before work must be completed quickly because she just wants to get out there. Once back in she's all love and calm.
 
I hate the term mareish. it can be used to describe/excuse such a wide range of behaviours and often seems to be used as a negative.
 
Id describe my pony as marish. She will randomly put her ears back and try to nip me when leading, grooming etc she stamps hind legs and ears back if you brush or touch anywhere near her bits. When in seasons she squeals and squirts continuously, back legs always gross and sticky hard to clean as aforementioned kicking/stamping. Basically she is more grumpy and sensitive than usual when in season. I will add that she is always good to ride and super hard worker whatever.
I have another mare who is the total opposite and sweet as anything. Love mares.

Mine will threaten to bite, is grumpy with her stablemate, will double barrel the stable door, is bolshy, has tanked off from school when being lunged and will rear in hand! She has been on regumate for a month now and the change is remarkable.
 
I've tended to find the geldings in my life are more consistent day to day. Mares have opinions and aren't afraid to express them. You also get some that are pretty challenging in season.

Mareish means different things to different owners. I think mine can be a bit stroppy at times, but she's easy compared to a couple on the yard!
 
I think this thread just illustrates how it's a catch all term. Mine is never grumpy or aggressive yet she's clearly ruled by her hormones :D
 
I hate the phrase - more of an owner excuse I think. Mares will always let you know exactly where there heads (and hearts!) are at. Just like a girl really ..
 
I have always been confused by the term too. My two mares are never any different when in season to not in season. Their temparements are very individual, but fairly even. One is more aloof, one is super sweet and cuddly. But they are never what others call opinionated, stroppy, grumpy, rude or aggressive. I did however have all that from my previous horse, a badly behaved and spoiled gelding. Lol.
 
Agree with the comments that it's an unhelpful catch all. I adore mares, have had many. They've all been very strong personalities with brilliant work ethics, but those personalities ranged from the sweetest, kindest, most self assured to the biggest diva on the planet. My current mare is the only one I would call a bit marish. She can come in from the field or out of the stable affectionate and chirpy or snake-faced and stand offish with no rationale that I can know about. If she's stroppy to handle, though, she's usually trying to tell me something. Many of them are...
 
yeah mine is never grumpy, nippy or bad tempered - she's just makes you very aware of her personality and you know exactly her thoughts on ever single thing. She is hilarious and can actually eye-roll and give an exasperated sigh if she's not happy with something offered to her. I have so much respect for her and she makes me laugh constantly with her diva stuff, but I'd ride her into battle if I had to because our bond is so strong and she just gives you her heart. I never understood why people bothered with mares and their seasons/moods etc, but I completely understand it now.
