What's everyone wearing for winter riding jackets these days?

So being out of things for the last 20+ years what does everyone wear these for outer riding jackets for hacking out? When I was last doing it everyone was wearing quilted poppered Loveson jackets, waxed Mascots and green quilted body warmers. What are the modern 'must have' equivalents please?

I've gone totally none horsey and have a Mountain Warehouse one.
It's the toastiest thing i've ever owned and has a fleece insert that is removable (easily!) so you can pick and choose the warmth level. Windproof, mudproof, waterproof in torrential rain, pony proof and has a hood and elasticated wrist bits so no wind or water gets up.

If you wear a BP, you may find you only need a thin waterproof, soft shell or something similar; as I find a BP very warm indeed!
Compared to 20 years ago, IMHO the quality has gone out of many of the well-known horsey jacket brands... try tkMaxx for outdoor stuff, look out for jackets with a 2 way zip. Some of the ski/outdoor ones come in some loud colours, not quite hi-viz but certainly eye catching.
 
I so agree with dorito....best jacket ever was a waxed mountain horse jacket, it lasted years and was fabulous. bought the "updated version" of the jacket. good, but not a patch on the original. Nowadays for winter riding, I wear a cosy gilet,and or body protector, with a roomy barbour jacket over

LOL the puffa......feel that way for my old barbour

I am a slob, I also rarely ride in public.

I wear quilted Carhartt overalls, if it is really, really cold I stick a quilted plaid shirt or my Carhartt jacket on top. Waterproof and warm and dries overnight in front of the fire when it gets really mucky.

If it rains I have lined Rambo waterproof chaps or leather chaps, never wear either in winter as it is just so much easier to slide into overalls.

I wear my 'riding' coat (which I would wear in public or if I were on a yard) grocery shopping! I have a Columbia something or other, no idea what style. I have a whole bunch of waxed jackets and other stuff but they aren't much cop really, we don't get much rain, so a lot of them are pretty much redundant.I like Mountain Horse and Helly Hensen does some excellent thermal kit - OH is a sailor so I pinch his stuff ;)
 
Puffa's there's another name from the 80's! LOL

I must admit I had wondered about some of the Mountain Warehouse stuff - we are a skiing family too, so also know about TKMaxx! I just wondered if there was current fashion in equestrian jackets. From what you have put above it appears that common sense and pocket depth may prevail these days over fashion. Which may be be no bad thing!
 
I buy costs made for hiking, much better than horsey coats for the money. I have a fab berghaus lightweight waterproof and a couple of paramo jackets too.
 
Ive gone for a SKI Jacket this year, I just much prefer the bright "look at me" colours that they are.

Also i have purchased a thick padded Navy Gilet. That I shall look posssh in. :)
 
I wear ski jackets. I got my last one from a ski wear rental shop for £15 as it was an ex rental. Cant recall ever being cold wearing it!
 
I wear a highly unattractive Dickie's Blousen that my husband bought from a farming shop- its the ugliest jacket you've ever seen but so light, warm and comfy!
 
I've got a wide selection of jackets for each season!

I've got a heavy ski jacket that I got from Primark for a bargin that is good.

Also have a heavy one that the Y/O gave me a couple of years ago - I think it might be regatta.

I've got a Jack Murphy blouson that my previous yard owner gave me (bit of a theme here) - I find it a bit short though.

When I was at blair I bought myself a lovely fleece linked blouson with hood from Rydale for £20 in the sale. I've worned it once and was toast hot in it so think that will do for this winter!

I do find I only need a heavy jacket for hacking. If I school I get too warm so always keep a rain jacket handy for that!
 
I have lots of jackets! However nothing beats my old just togs red coat from 10 years ago, but it has sadly died a death.

I now have

1 x musto blouson (this is my warmest and best shower proof coat)
1 x bronte blouson (most comfortable)
1 x Horsewear green thing (most uncomfortable, only shower proof and too long but was free for working at YHL one year)
1 x drizabone long wax jacket (best teaching jacket and for very wet days!)
 
I'm odd and can get very warm while riding.
Rarely wear a proper jacket to ride in, even mid winter. Usually just a sweatshirt and a gilet.

I have 3 jackets

A waterproof shell jacket

A full length Musto that covers legs and can be used for riding

My favourite though is a jacket made by Horsewear and branded 'Lucinda Green' it looks a bit like an old fashioned waxed jacket but in really modern, light, waterproof breathable fabric. It's a great jacket and doubles up for shooting and walking the dog too.
 
A wax jacket, a Puffa, a Berghaus L/W or Musto Blouson usually. Also sometimes wear the Rockfish Rider's Hi Viz jacket.

If hacking out in extreme weather, I also wear full suede chaps or wax full chaps, which make quite a difference in keeping your legs warm.
 
Racesafe BP and a Horseware Corrib jacket that I got free when I took out a Petplan insurance for a horse some 4 years ago... and it's still going strong :o (When the BP comes off, I replace that with a gilet I bought from Aldi) Yes, I'm a cheapskate!! ;)
 
If anyone is in need of a warm winter jacket, i am your girl!!! ;) I work for a large outdoor company and look after the Websale, give me a pm and will be happy to help you out with a H&H discount! I have worn Jack Wolfskin 3-1 for the past few years, short enough to ride in and superdoooper warm. Also the shell can be worn in mild weather.
 
I've just treated myself to a Euro Star down jacket (yet to arrive!) but I have Jack Wills gillets and a tresspass jacket.
 
Goretex girl here. Large enough size that can put bp or down gilet beneath. Ariat and North Face do some beautiful thin down gilets that are really warm AND look good.
 
I've had modern waterproof/breathable fabrics, but find that they need frequent washing and soon lose their waterproofness, even when done with the recommended products. I've gone back to my old fashioned Barbour jackets, a Bedale for warmer weather and a heavyweight shooting style one for severe weather. I don't have to worry about washing them as they simply sponge down and are easy enough to re waterproof. A gilet underneath and a neck warmer kept me cosy in the bad winter of 2010. :)
 
I have had my fair share of horse brand jackets that have lasted a couple of years before the fillling becomes thinner and thinner with each wash.

The best jacket and warmest I have was from Primark in the mens section. It has climbed Snowdon with me and of course being the cheapest clothing item I wore at £30, it was also the most waterproof in torrential rain:rolleyes:
 
I've got a Riding Sport jacket for when it's cold, and a Mountain Horse one for when it's super freezing. Also have a hi-viz jacket too, which I haven't used yet since it was too icy to go hacking last winter.
 
I've got a Dublin thick coat, it's very thick do I sometimes struggle with riding in it but it's sooo warm. It's black with pink piping and got a pink fleece inside.
