you've ever owned ?

Mine would need to be the chestnut below, an ex racer who was imported here from the USA as a yearling in 1992 & sold for 475,000 guineas! His sire was a Kentucky Derby winner which probably had a lot do with it!

I acquired him for free!

£200 for a little highland mare who needed 'sorted' after being ruined by a riding school - spent some time letting her chill out and doing fun stuff before selling her on (for not much more!!) to a lovely family who still have her....

Most expensive was an ISH a couple of years ago, paid £3500, spent hundreds sorting his back and teeth probs and hoping that him and I would 'click', never happened sadly as he is a cracking little horse. Sold him on for what i paid to a good home...

Best horses are my exracers, both under 2k, both priceless to me....

Cheapest was my loan pony who stayed until she died.
Most expensive so far was Hattie at £1200, I don't do expensive ponies.

Cheapest that was actually mine (so not including loan pony and all my shares, who were all free) was my first pony, Lily. 14.1hh Welsh Cob nutcase, ruined my confidence but we had fun all in all. £1500. Most expensive was my second and current horse, Maiden. 15.3hh ID X saint, restored my confidence then cost me more than she's worth in vet bills when she tore her tendon and is currently on field rest. £3000. She's probably un-saleable now, if she ever recovers she probably wouldn't be worth more than £1000, but she'll never be sold so it doesn't matter to me!

A guinnea is £1 and a Shilling. So add 5% to the price to get pounds

The last 2 horses I owned both got sold for £20k in their youth, I didn't pay that though. The most expensive I've paid is £6.5K and the cheapest £150.

Ah but you're being decimal diesel dog. That can't be done with old money- which is why they got rid of it. A guinea was indeed £1 and a shilling. There were 240 old pennies to a pound and one shilling was 12 pennies. Work that out as a fraction - I can't. Same way just failed to help my son with his math's homework. Made no sense at all to me.

can you tellme what a guinea is as i keep hearing it but don't know how to think of it in pounds? keep reading it in horse and hound too. How many guineas make a pound?

Yes, it was a pound and a shilling so is now £1.05
Traditionally you paid craftsmen and higher ranked people in guineas, and tradespeople in pounds.

A guinea hasn't been got rid off though. Those TB people are very traditional and still sell their horses in guineas.

Old money can be decimilised. If 240d = £1. then 12d/240d = 0.05. Which therefore = £1.05.

I lent my ex event mare to a friend for a year who bred from her, and returned her in foal to me, that was 4yrs ago, i now have a stunning 16.2hh mare, who i am hoping will go a very long way, she is showing all the right signs, she didnt cost me a penny!

Sidiki was free, so I guess she wins on that front, but Ajay was £400, and he was the best buy ever.

Most expensive- Our new boys at £3500 each, but IMVHO that was a steal. Most expensive we have sold-a very sucsessful shetland mare for £10,000 (rediculous I know!)

our most expensive was 2500 for a stunning black (excellent bloodlines) welsh section D stallion
cheapest was probably one of our section A's,maybe 200
my mare i still have 15yrs later was an absolute bargain at 650! back in 1992

Hmm I currently have 3 freebies, the most expensive was probably the crazy pony at a princely £1600!!! But I think the title goes to my first pony, bought by my (drunken) father in 1976 he paid 185 guineas for a 2 yr old shetland mare!!!!!!!

PS we assume he was drunk to have paid that for said shetland, (she did turn out to be a saint, but you never know with them critters!)

I dont really have a dearest/cheapest but I did arrive at the yard the other day to see a rather expensive visitor next door to Pride.....

She was currently valued at well over 1/2 million apparently

The cheapest is an ex racer with a tendon injury @ £300.... at the other end of the scale is Ovidius currently worth about £27,000.

At the end of the day, price has nothing to do with it, its the temperament thats important to me and all of mine have cracking temperaments and in my eyes are all just as precious as each other

ditto, Beaus previous owner paid a 5 figure sum for him, but to us he is priceless, he has given us so much, espec my OH, who leanred to ride on him and now has so much confidence.

Lance was only 3k 14yrs ago, but he was only that cheap because although he was competing elementaryand was very bold jumping, his owner couldnt handle him, he napped 2 miles home with her, so she sent him to a dealer. The dealer wasnt keen to sell before she had done her magic, but at the end of the day she did, hence him being so cheap!

I had a little welsh cob given to me by an old family friend when she had to give up riding, and he cost her £50 from the sales. he wasn't the easiest horse to start with as he'd been beaten about, but by the time i grew out of him (he was 14.2, i'm now 5'10") and my sister started riding him, he was doing anything and everything, and event went to pony club national horse trials with my sister!

the most expensive will be the one i have now, who cost me £3000
