What's the worst thing you encounter out hacking?

This is pretty normal, all this is behind ONE tractor :D

Well I know she won't want to appear in the magazine, but a lady I know encountered several naked men in the woods behind her farm one Tuesday morning and they weren't there just to enjoy the scenery!

A couple thinking they had pulled off into a empty field, only for us to hack round it and catch them having FUN on the bonnet!!!! He didn't even stop just put his thumb up grinned and carried on. Needless to say my OH shouted 'nice day for a ride isn't it mate'....seriously babe, shut up!!!! MEN!!!!:D:rolleyes:

LMAO :D :D

On one hacking route I have to pass a field of Alpacas (the horses hate these!), a peacock and peahens, and white Ostriches (yes honestly - I did a double take the first time I saw them  ), they are all on different parts of the ride so I can't even get all the 'scaryness' out of the way at once!

A large lorry depot approx 200m from my field entrance.

Having a haulage firm in the village means 99.9% of the time I hack out I am likely to meet at least one artic lorry.

I will have to get the OH to get a pic of us hacking past the actual depot, all be it on my big green mare who I have only ridden a handful of times this year!

I to have encountered a naked guy doing rather rude things to himself while lying on the ground.... Didn't scare the horse much but I did cantre away from him, perv!!! Me n my ponio regularly have to pass skip wagons as their jyst down from my yard, they always slow down so thats fine. The scariest thing I've encountered lately was a guy, on the same back lane I was riding my seriously spooky mare down, who was rolling a massive trampline down the middle of the road towards us!! Luckily I turned Ellie round before she saw it... I mean how bloody random is that! I dread to think what she would have done if shed seen it lol!!

Stag parties!

I ride around near a Paintball centre and in the summer convoys of men packed into people carriers drive along the lanes, they are normally very nice and polite but you do get the odd load that are a bit roudy! This is what you get living near Newquay!!

well the only proper hack route has a bus depo then an industrial estate with a lorry depo then a fishing club with fishermen down by the lake behind bushes then a gravel pit plus the compulsary tractors from the fields. But what does my horse look at??? the sign for the place selling strawberries  :D

According to my horse it was a tyre swing hanging from a tree that we'd seen countless times before, but that was moving of its own accord in the wind as if being sat on by a ghost child.

First time I've had to dismount in 7 years out hacking due to almost ending up going over a fence.

Forget heavy traffic, scary things etc horse all fine with them.

The thing that gets us is narrow metal gates with springs that close very quickly with a lot of force. Poor neddy has been injured on them and so has my mum

idiot tractor drivers
a terrier that comes within 50cm of HRH's legs trying to attack her then realises shes big and gives up
high speed trains
stalkers (although they tend to tell me where they will be and i steer well clear lol)
timber lorries - flipping HUGE but usally v conscientious drivers :)
luckily HRH is sensible
unless i put her hay out on a windy day when she is not looking - then she lays an egg cos obviously its horse eating hay moving accross the field

We have a peacock, a wind turbine, baby goats, radio masts and helicopters, a cricket ground, a MOTO cross track and remote control model aircraft. As well as the usual tractors and milk tankers. Baby horse doesn't bother about any of it, but then I tried to weigh tape her and she turned into a quivering wreck!

I've met a crane, numerous tractors with huge gizmos on the back, combines and artic lorries. ( horses are kept at a agricultural contractors, so big machines are part of the deal!) One ride, there was this 'cherry picker' thingy, man up in the cradle mending the side of a barn. We were on a narrow lane, and had no option but to go under it, man up above our heads. Meg was brilliant, never flinched much to my relief. She then went and spoiled it by spooking at a 'wrong' colour leaf!!
The only thing I dread to meet, is rattly cattle trailers coming up behind us. It always makes poor Meg scared. Oh, and horse and carts, but think that has only happened once in 10 or so years.

I keep my two on a farm so encounter lots of tractors, combines and irrigators. I also do a lot of hacking in Thetford Forest and my Coblet was completely freaked out by a herd of deer in the week. Just managed to calm her down when another herd shot out in front of her, and a couple of minutes later a cat out for a morning stroll which completely finished her off. So I guess she thinks that four legged furry things are the worst things she comes across!

Mine (11yo) is terrified of the measuring stick, yet completely unfazed by ladders, or lunge whips etc.

This.

I have to ride over it. I ride south to north up it on the way out and back down again on the way home! The roundabout is elevated and the road under it is the A14 :)

Nothing absolutely horrendous but

A hot air balloon landing in field next to us

Once came across car bouncing up and down at the side of the track, scared some of the horses silly, Mine NO he marched right up to it and put his nose on the window (I couldn't stop him) I think you can guess what the couple inside were doing, needless to say woman screamed, I'm apologising whilst trying to look the other way and move my horse away :o

a bouncing castle at a local pub was interesting as was

the 'floats ' for the local village fete

a barge ontop of a lorry stuck in the lane was difficult to explain to pony, it really should have been under the bridge in the canal

Oh my and people WALKING on the road instead of inside cars

Well, it's rather embarrasing really. Naughty Pony isn't scared of normal horse-scaring things, not anymore. Oh no, he's scared of anyone who happens to be in their very own garden, because they are obviously waiting to lamp him one with the spade they're holding!, and he's mega scared of a donkey, so much so that we've had to find an alternate route as he just will NOT go past it. He's also not an huge fan of the ducks that choose the very moment we're merrily walking along the riverside to make an HUGE amount of noise and emerge flapping their bloody wings from the bushes.

Pigs. Oh, Lord. Pigs. Free range ones, emerging from the woods.
Other than that, just that blue paint they put on the road when they're planning on digging a hole. That really is scary.

At my old yard I used to hack regularly past a field which had pigs, alpacas and emus in! My boy was a bit surprised to say the least the first time we went past and the emus had been put in there. I don't think he had ever seen them before and one was standing and looking over the gate! ;)
