Firstly, sorry about the typo in the title!

I'm not talking about the horse you HAVE necessarily, but your ideal horse. Personally, I have always loved thoroughbreds. I find them nice and light in the hand and forward going. They are quick to learn and easy to hold together and school. Although I love to watch big moving warmbloods, and have to ride several as part of my job, I don't enjoy riding them. I am a perfectionist and make sure I get a good tune out of them, but boy are they exhausting to ride! I have also noticed that many are owned by people that cannot ride them (by this, I mean ride them so that they are working to the best of their ability - ie: properly). But yet seem totally unaware that they cannot ride them! It is not that they are bad riders necessarily, but more that they are too small, weak, or old to ride them properly. Yet put them on a little TB and they ride them perfectly fine. What makes people like this over horse themselves?

But anyway, just thought I'd post a poll to see what your ideal type of horse is. And can you ride it? :D

Oh not my experience, but I think I know what you mean. I tried a HUGE moving WB and didn't like it one bit, was hard work just staying with him movement so I didn't buy him

However there are the other types of WB

I have one he is not a HUGE mover as some are but he does have elevation and yes I can ride him correctly. He is the easiest horse I have ever ridden as he naturally tracks up and works from behind. He is VERY responsive to all my aids and just so light. It is a truly lovely feeling even though he is still early in his training

i have an arab. Last horse was my 2nd horse and was an arab with a heart of gold- taught me so much. Currently ride a KWPN x connie who is very strong to ride. I do like bigger movement though - want big movement but with lightness which some warmbloods have.
Think i really want an arab x warmblood ;) having said that i know of a lot of arabs with canter issues

I agree with you. I have a warmblood mare and she is not a big mover, just a very expressive and active mover. She is not what I would call big though, only 15.3 hh. In this thread I am referring to the really big moving types. If you like smaller, lighter moving WBs then tick the TB option. I should have added it there.

For me its Irish Draughts, or Irish Draught x TB, or TB.

I have all of the above :D

Of these I feel I ride better on the lighter IDs/chunkier TBs. Can I ride it (them)...well...tbh atm Im feeling like I couldnt ride a rocking horse and my instructor would probably agree :D:D

(temporary hitch Im sure, yes I can generally ride them. I have to work harder on the larger chunkier IDs as Im pretty petite and quite likely a strong, long legged amazon would get more out of them. But I have to ride them so needs must :))

Arabian, all the way, every time. :D

Can I ride them? Yes, I trust them not to fall over and they trust me not to ask them to do anything too stupid. I don't care if they jog, or canter sideways, or piaffe, or snort at fairies in the hedge, all part of the fun of them, just do it on a loose rein. Toughest, most honest little nags out there as far as I am concerned, but then I have no desire to make pretty patterns in an arena or leap around Badminton, I'd rather do Extreme Trail or the Tevis Cup so they suit me

None of those.
I went out and bought my ideal horse - a mongrel :)

A 15.2hh MW good looking cross-breed who moves well, jumps well, is lots of fun yet safe.
Talent to do well in competition and well matched to my riding ability.

At the age of 5 he can offer ...

I voted cob, largely because it's years since I sat on a TB! However, I do like cobs with a bit of presence and oomph! My old cob thought he was a TB (and a stallion at that) so had the best of both worlds

Gorgeous!

wanted to vote for TB but can't bear to vote for arab type too as that has to be my idea of hell:eek::p i love the versatility of TB as well as their good looks :)

I have a few Warmbloods and my lifetime horse is a Warmblood, I have kept two of her daughters, both pink papered and (imho) stunning. I do however, have a big soft spot for a nice little thoroughbred, have had a couple of absolute crackers over the years - so I would be torn, either, as long as they are not too wide or too angular. Fussy i know, but I get on best with horses I feel I am sitting in, not perched on top.

So far, that has kept me away from the hairy cob types, but the more I look on here, the more I am strangely drawn to them... :D

Luckily I own my perfect horse, she's not a competition horse and she can be nappy, but I love riding her. She's my chestnut anglo, so I voted for TB/arabs. :)

I've also got high hopes for my little grey being a fab ride in the future. :D

I love riding ex-racers too as long as they aren't too tall (too far to fall :p ).

Cob- the turbo charged ones who you can have a blast with. But if I'm honest, anything who knows the line and doesn't cross it but knows how to have a laugh is my type. Best 2 horses I've ridden have been a million miles apart- a 15.2hh TB and a 15.2hh welsh cob. Welsh cob is built like a brick outhouse, TB was solid for a TB but still not big. They were both perfect!

I wuv my pony...

The one thing we can do, is open gates, he's little and very manoeverable. I can also pick stuff up - eg branches in the way of a jump out hacking - even if it's only about a foot off the floor :D I can do them lower if I have a stirrup strap on :p I can get on from the floor and I don't get decapitated by the low branches.

So what if I need swan necks for dr (if I wear anything), so what if jumping's a joke and we can't keep up at horseball :o

:D

I have to admit, I do love a pony. I wish I was shorter. But at 5 '10" I look a bit silly on a pony. :o

As I have got older, cobs have become more appealing, but only if they are forward going.

mine is similar size too 16hh
Can't quite bring myself to tick the TB one :D

Love thoroughbreds and have one but really dont like arabs (sorry) so cant tick the box on the poll. Also love chunkier ISH/TBx.

None of the above! I buy for temperament rather than style, as such I have had trad cobs, welshies, AA, TB's, you name it. I currently have as riding horses a KWPN, a 1/4 Shire X 3/4 TB and an ISH who is a big moving warmblood that's got a high percentage of TB in him.

I think I'll vote with Dee for temprement over looks. I want something up to the job, an appropriate size, responsive and forward but sensible and sane.

I've loved all the arabs I've ridden, I've enjoyed TBs, currently own a WB, can't say cobs are really my thing but have ridden some fab ones, can appreciate ponies and why people would want one, have enjoyed riding them from time to time too but generally feel to big on under 14.2hh.
